An absolutely beautiful documentary which brings you to the reality of life. Prostitution has been there for ages. Politicians not only ruined the image of Heera Mandi but also ruined the lives of people living or working in the area. Now these women are probably in rich areas of Lahore. Police is still the same as before as long as they get their pockets filled they will look away. I believe they should try to revive Heera Mandi so workers and their Clint’s can be in same area.

There’s a vivid description of HeeraMandi in the 30s and 40s by Pran Neville in his book on Lahore. As described, it wasn’t a place to sell bodies- but, was where Music- Dance, Art & Culture had its own epicentre. Greatest of the musicians, singers- dancers- came from here, all which played a very important role in creating the original vintage ‘pop-culture’ of the Indian Subcontinent. Sad- that the partition did not only take away its charm, but quiet literally divided it- in its entirety.

What a beautifully made documentary. Loved everything from the narration to the interviews. Would have loved if you also asked the sex workers about the kind of people come there as clients, and also about the derision they face by public and other challenges of their lives. Maybe if were willing then what would they like to do if not this work.
Like in the Hindi film 'Mandi', so many of the patrons are the educated middle classes using these men and women as house slaves and sax slaves. The hypocrisy of the middle classes, even this film maker here, is difficult to take seriously. There is another side to these people too. They are Sufis, so they also bring joy to the world through art, music, dance. And also they put their women into the cinema and 'take the shame' for the society. They are such good singers and musicians because they play for God as they conduct their role. Finally, these people are also Custodians of the Culture. So, as the film maker's class wear Western and speak Tootle Pootie English, the Meerasi preserve musical instruments, costumes, dances, poetry, singing. The whole of Pakistani Cinema is a document of Punjabi/Pashto Mythology and Culture that will serve as a template for future generations when they have stopped 'Being American'... ; ) K
