I’ve always had a soft spot for the SLK 230 since it and the Z3 were both in NFS High Stakes that same year in 1999, so like the 993 Turbo, I sort of grew up noticing these and remember seeing a bright yellow one at the local Mercedes Benz dealership when my dad bought his 2003 C32 AMG
Me too I have always had a soft spot for the SLK 230 since I was able to play High Stakes when it was brand new in 1999 it is still my favorite NFS game to this day. I was so excited about the Porsche 993 Turbo video as well since that is my other favorite all time car. I have owned 3 SLK R170's my current one is a '98 SLK230 in imperial red with AMG sport package. NFS High Stakes was the reason I had a dream to own one of these some day :)
In early 2021 I got curious about the 90's NFS game and picked up a physical copy of High Steaks for the PC for my hand-me-down laptop that I got for free. Dated but I always loved the 90's era of 3D poly graphics, the car selection is small but well picked to fit inside the game and the soundtrack holy shit... They seriously do not make racing game music like it anymore. Especially what fucking train wreck was the latest NFS titles (Unbound ugh...) have for there soundtrack which is "hip and popular" with the kids that funny enough backfired at their faces fantastically. I always liked the German roadsters for being just stunning and a blast to drive in racing games but High Steaks made me realize I can buy one right now for under 10K that is in a mostly decent condition state that you might need to put some in the work yourself since getting it repair by a shop will cost you a pretty dollar. I seen some late 90's M Roasters (Z3) that are fairly priced for some people are asking but recently I spot one that had a owner who was selling one for 8 grand with a MT/6cyl 2.5 with around 125K miles on the odometer. He said he put in lot's of work to even list it but Ill see the list soon when I test drive it... I CAN'T WAIT! Sadly I haven't seen some 230's lying around with MT's just yet in Texas. Love this video as someone who has owned 3 SLK R170's (still currently own one) it's nice to see these cars get more appreciation they deserve the current market prices don't reflect how much of a great car they really are especially if you find one that's well looked after. Glad you enjoyed the driving experience the M111 Kompressor is a unique sounding engine plenty of character and a nice little rumble down low as well :)
I own a first generation C230 Kompressor. It has the exact same engine as this SLK. I totally agree with you on the engine characteristics. I love how the peak torque is right at Highway cruising speed. (2500 rpm) no, it’s not the fastest, but it has a ton of character. The M111k engine is a fantastic little 4 cylinder with incredible torque and sound. I’m pretty jealous of that aftermarket exhaust. I’d love to have it on my little Kompressor. Awesome video Tedward. 🎉

My dad had a '99 SLK. Decent cruiser. The SLK was more for show. Its thing was the automatic retractable roof. That was the party piece and utterly incredible for the time.
One of the few cars I have never really liked. It looks stumpy to me. But then again here in Italy we mostly got the 4-pot 2.0 liter, which was not only underpowered, but sounded farty-awful. This does not detract from an otherwise EXCELLENT video my dear friend, which I have enjoyed HUGELY.
I am glad to see the way that car goes with a manual transmission, because I have a friend who have the same car with an automatic transmission. And his car really don't play the same game. I'm sure you will understand what I mean, reading that my summer car is an SLK 350 2005, AMG pack, manual transmission.
