Regardless of macro lens focal length, if you're close-focused at 1:1, there shouldn't be any more, or less, shake/motion blur. With a macro lens, whether 50mm or 100mm or 200mm, the magnification is the same, 1:1, and the image will fill the same amount of space in the frame. The only thing that changes is the distance between you and the subject. With macro, a longer lens is usually preferable as you can put more distance between the camera and the subject, along with a little tighter, more isolating FOV. This is especially true with insects. I have found that with 50mm, you have to get very close to them, almost touching them, and often it scares them away. Also, you need room for flash, and a lot of the time, 50mm doesn't give you enough room to light your subject practically and/or adequately. I generally put my camera and lens in manual mode. I set my lens to its closest focus and move my body to focus. I usually have my camera set to continuous high speed and mash the shutter release right as the subject is coming into focus as I move the camera toward it.

@@RachelLerch Thank you! I love macro! I've scoured youtube, the internet, and books for a decade trying to pick up tips and tricks and improve my images. But, I found that with macro photography, especially insect photography, it can be closely guarded, and experts don't really like to give away their secrets, lol. So for me, it was a lot of trial and error. I also ended up making my own custom flash system. So, I try to share what I've learned when I can. Just as I have learned a lot from your channel. Your videos are great! Thanks for sharing and always being so positive! :)

@@adamaj74 thanks for sharing ur tips, however i am really wondered if there should be any difference between a 50 and 100mm macro lenses in terms of DOF when both are used at same settings and same magnification lets say 1:1
the 100mm one will give a lot of more working distance but it also have a narrower field of view , the narrower the field of view the shallower the DOF, at the same time when objects are far from the lens which is the case with a lot of working distance the DOF of these objects close to each other should be better, so i am assuming that both cancels each other and these should not be a difference between both lenses in terms of DOF? hope u can answer me, thanks

The biggest advantage of the 100 over the 50 is indeed the working distance. When making images of insects and spiders the farther away from the subject the less jumpy or flighty they are. however the longer the lens the shallower the depth of field becomes so you do end up using f11 and 16 to get the depth of field you want.

@@RachelLerch Throw an extension tube onto the 70-300 to get a closer focusing distance. I've used it on bees where I didn't want to get too close and it works well. I've found though that bees aren't really bothered by lenses being shoved right up on top of them. They just do their thing jumping from flower to flower and totally ignore you.

I like you, will get clear down on the ground if I need to -because we all tire of the appearance of photos from above, looking down. I just started using a polymer rubber (weighs nothing! ) yoga mat for wet grass or weeds -it hoses right off. All macro lenses will give a shallow depth of field at higher f stop numbers, so for stationary flowers a short or articulating tripod really helps.
I use a 150mm macro lens -but I like the working distance for insects ,so they don't fly off and I don't throw a camera shadow on my subject.. Take care ,be well, spring is on the doorstep :-)

Thanks for making such a great video on the 50mm macro lens. You really show how much fun it can be taking flower photographs and how the lens racks in and out. I love the sound of the old servo focus motors. Back when AF came out that was the coolest thing in photography! I been using a canon eos3 film camera with a 135mm soft focus lens to create dreamy flower shots for years now. The soft focus completely mixes the background into a wonderful dreamy out of focus color mix that changes with position and allows the center of the flower to emerge completely in focus. All the unpleasant bugs, twigs and bad leaves are gone with no Photoshop needed! Its a very fun and artistic way to create shot after shot of dreamy colorful flower photos you can use for cards and decor. Also the lens brings out the beauty of women and flowers. You may want to try one of these lenses on your camera and make some memorable images of your mother and her gardens.
What brings me to watch your video is I recently purchased a vintage Canon 1Ds mkiii, the 50mm 2.5 macro and macro flash unit for virtually nothing. I can't wait for gray gloomy winter to end and the daffodils and tulips to come out once again and show their magic appearance this spring. Thanks again for the fun and inspiring video.

The Sony is a good lens, but the Minolta lenses are sweet lenses. Minolta made great glass!! I have the 50mm macro as well, except an earlier model than yours. I may have mentioned that to you before. I want to get the 100mm version of the lens as it's really good, too. With my E-M1, I have a 30mm and a 60mm macro combo that work well together. With the 30, I can almost get right on top of my subject and get in really close. Good for flowers and such. The 60, I use mainly for insects and other creepy crawlies as it allows me to stay a "respectable" distance from them and not get bitten or spook them too much. With your setup, once you get used to using the 100, you'll find that both lenses will compliment one another.

😊 tip. Try using a fixed focus
( and moving in/out to bring subject into focus )
This is a form of " zone focusing " that works really well when shooting subjects that are near the minimum focal distance..
( also ) do you know Minolta made a 1:1 macro adaptor ( extra optic ) that screws onto its 49mm tread lens ..
    I use it on my Minolta " nigty fifty " plus " 2x Teleconver" to give a real unique 100mm Macro🤫 🤫
    Ps: regarding Minolta lenses
There is something just beautiful about there colour qualityi
Hence ( when ever posible ) I shoot almost exclusively using them.
    Combined with a A-Mount Sony DLSR ( such as a A100 or A900 ) there just Awesome..
Ps: ( i know its really heavy )
but try the Minolta 80-200 APO ..
This is EASILY the finist lens Minolta ever made
    ( followed closely by the 100mm F2.8 )
( should be able to pick one up right now for about $400 ) 2023
Sony still make a version of it but expect to lay out more like $4500

Great video! Definitely makes me miss my a99ii, I was one of the very first in Canada to get one when it was released (got it before Henrys, Vistek, etc). Some of my favourite photos were taken with that camera, but even though I moved over to other mirrorless Sonys that had the same sensor, there was something about the feel of that a99ii that I missed. During our lockdowns where we are, and stuck working from home, I've started the day doing some weird macro shot in the backyard and making it my background for my computer for the day. It's a routine of sorts
