I do truly love and appreciate Rafael's thoroughly detailed explanation of the technique. Then again, I expect no less from one of the best. Thank you very much, Professor Rafa!
I learned this as a white belt a few years back from this video and hit it on so many purples, browns and blacks with old school games that hadn’t adapted to this kind of game. Still in my A game!!!
Man I’m so glad I got to watch this without needing to rewind over and over to get the details. You are truly awesome professor. Can’t wait to start drilling it the way you showed
Excellent step-by-step deconstruction of the berimbolo. The emphasis on the smaller details and repetition really helps convey how to properly execute the move.
I watched this video and I did in the academy and I got. I take the back of a purple belt (I am blue). Perfect! Rafa Mendes is the best. Thank you Mendes bros to share this video in the youtube, you are helping me so much. I'm brazilian, but one day I want to train in Costa Mesa, CA. Thank you!
Love this move, it has amplified my game exponentially. I also like to utilize the reverse berimbolo. Mendes bros, please return to H20 MMA in Montreal! When you first came, I was a white belt of only three months and did not have a full comprehension on the techniques you showed us. I'm a blue belt now and would absorb your teachings more proficiently.
@TommyDaGun589 Thanks. I was speaking more in terms of the general stuff on their website, though, and whether it's very broad, so that no matter what your game - flexibility, pressure - there's plenty for you.
@Oleksandr Karpenko, De La Riva is an open guard technique, similar to X guard, spider guard, butterfly guard, etc. Berimbolo is essentially an inverted roll that can be used to sweep. The berimbolo sweep is most commonly used from the 50-50 position or from De La Riva.
I do, thanks. My question was more of a general one, but I will say that in high level competition, you see much more of the berimbolo in the lighter weight classes: Rodolfo and Buchecha aren't really known for it, for example.
@Caboselecta It was made with paint, a skateboard, 2 ramps, a wall and canvas I believe. Someone close to RVCA or sponsored by RVCA actually made those.
please!!!!!! next time put some colored gi on rather than the white ones cause it's very hard to see the details whith the white mat. Thank you very much for posting this vids. this is Gold.
Defending strikes is not a concern in IBJJF tournaments. Love it or hate it they are using it to win in their sport. If you want to go do MMA because you think that rule set is more "realistic" then thats your choice but know anyone could make the same argument about rules in MMA... as in 5 Minute Rounds... Yea thats realistic. Stand ups. weight classes, No kicks to a downed opponent. How about wearing board shorts and vaseline for a uniform? Don't forget MMA is a sport itself with rules and a scoring system that are manipulated by its athletes and your "Reality" is completely objective.... Shit my grandmother could kill Jon Jones squeezing her index finger.... hows that for reality. Fortunately I dont think she has it out for him but if he keeps poking people in the eyes...
Hahaha. Took me too long to get what you meant by squeezing the index finger. I thought that your grandmother was going to kill him with some ninja deathtouch. ^^
A sport is a sport. Why people dont go to American football players to tell em "Yeah but you dont jump high enough and slam that ball through the post" Because its not basketball dummy its NFL You dont slam you run and touch. Apart from this .... just go do MMA.... go. Without some form of grappling go try your "luck" in MMA..... The moment the opponent realise you dont know ground game or grappling you gonna have a very bad time.
tell me about it. im 200 lbs and just restarted training 2 months ago after a super long layoff. My instructor is a lightweight bjj worlds top competitor nad shows us these kind of tech and other where you swing the leg and sneek under and take the back. You should see me attempting it during drills. i look like a hipo trying to breakdance. its not pretty
the miyao brothers have a berimbolo video with variations though. it doesn't come in too much detail but it's got mind blowing variations, I can't remember what the name is but ya. . .
You guys should make the academy much whiter: I still have some nerve endings in the back of my eyeballs. ...thanks a lot for this: excellent instruction; might subscribe to the paysite, at some point. Do you have many techniques for the bigger guys - or is it very much geared towards the little guys?
Wow. This move is not as new as many make it out to be. I remember training off and on at a Barra affiliated gym back in the late 90's-early 2000. There were a few tall dudes who messed around with a position that had no name. Sometimes these two tall dudes tried pulling the berimbolo at the same time and we just called them the upside down clowns. It was a very discouraging position and no one knew what to do when they got stuck in it. the only thing the personon top could think about doing is hammerfisting the guys balls into his stomach but alas that cant be done while rolling. Its just funny to me this weird experimental position could have been used back then to win tournies but it kind of just stayed inthe practice room out of thought that it was super frustrating and clever but not real jiujitsu. Now from the late 2000's to now its real. its hella real and its bizare for an old timey bjj fan like me to watch..haha
actually a guy called Marcel Ferreira was doing in comps, he won as a purple middle heavy in 1996 the Worlds, but he mostly went to top position and passed because the pressure against the leg is big and it works well as a sweep but inside the gym he was doing the back variations too. But Mendes added new details and a focus on taking the back, and changed grips. Funny story made me smile now!
usually the whole movement flows so fast its like being thrown you have no time to react for a toe hold... only if a guy who tries it is slow or not really good at it
They are little guys with the best Jiu Jitsu. Chances are that they will teach little guy techniques, considering that they have first hand experience with that kind of game. Check out some bigger guys for big guy techniques?
Having trouble sweeping from half guard when they stand up! I would like to see a transition into Berimbolo from half guard.after the sweep here I see the knee bar!
I do truly love and appreciate Rafael's thoroughly detailed explanation of the technique. Then again, I expect no less from one of the best. Thank you very much, Professor Rafa!
They never cease to amaze... not even their 6 year-old videos...
If they can teach it to dozens of students at a time month after month, they can teach it in a video.
Excellent step-by-step deconstruction of the berimbolo. The emphasis on the smaller details and repetition really helps convey how to properly execute the move.

best berimbolo instruction I have ever seen, now I can finally read and do berimbolo
That has to be the cleanist/ coolest looking dojo I have ever seen.
Wish more coaches would be this detailed and pedagogical.

By far the best explanation on UA-cam, great video!
This made my berimbolo even better!
I always ended up in half guard and was not satisfied. Now I know what to do! Obrigado

Uncomfortably clean
@TommyDaGun589 Thanks.

man oh man great flow
What stops the danger of leg drag when you bring back the foot from mat to the hip while unbalancing ?
Beautiful dojo & technique. Wish I weren't a 215 pound lummox and could do these techniques.

Gênio do esporte!
who did Rafa and Gui Mendes start BJJ with? Where did they come up training? I want to go to Cali just to visit their gym
My favorite part is 3:26, "Oh, what am I doing?" LOL. I've found myself asking that very question at times.
Many, many times
the miyao brothers have a berimbolo video with variations though.
it doesn't come in too much detail but it's got mind blowing variations, I can't remember what the name is but ya. . .
thank u so muuuchh for the details !!
incrivel
i'm not high level in Jiu Jitsu, and i'm interested...what the differents between Berimbolo and De la Riva???
When you drill it enough and you get it fluid it feels like one step. Practice, Practice :)
Amazing explanation

at about 5:22 how do you prevent your opponent from foot locking your (toe hold) when you're upside down?
The real berimbolo - Samuel Braga

Where are they?
Very nice but why do you put your foot on the mat to change the angle why not just use the foot on his hip to escape?
They are little guys with the best Jiu Jitsu. Chances are that they will teach little guy techniques, considering that they have first hand experience with that kind of game. Check out some bigger guys for big guy techniques?

you are so didact, congratulations.
Awesome
Poderia Fazer 1 Traduzido Ou Legendado????
I know what I'm gonna use next time I find myself in that position 😉👌
Muito bom, mesmo!
Am I the only one thinking they should be wearing blue gis? They might as well be wearing green in front of a green screen.
muito bom vlwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!
berimbolo is an attack launched from the de la riva.
Nice looking dojo haha
Great
Berimbolo: it's a word that defines something you can't define.
does the word Berimbolo mean anything outside of jiujitsu ?
nope
Jeff Chen , yes, the word is close to a Brazilian harp like instrument
