1975 308 GT\4 Dino - The Ferrari that technically wasn't.

  • The Ferrari 308 GT4 was initially not badged as a Ferrari at all, but rather the next edition of the Dino. After a few years, Ferrari decided the 308 GT4 should wear the prancing horse badge, and so after 1976 they all came out of the factory sporting the Ferrari Cavallino. The 308 GT4 caught a lot of attention because of its wild styling. For many years Ferrari had used Pininfarina as their coach builder, however for the Ferrari 308 GT4 they switched it up and enlisted Bertone to design the bodies, giving the car
a very modern and unusual style.
There was a time in the '70s when the Ferrari 308 GT4 was the only car imported into the US. The Berlinetta Boxers and 400's were never made to be US legal and smog compliant, so Ferrari decided the V8 engine of he 308 would fit the bill for the US market.

I owned a 1975 s/n 10694 308GT4 Dino with a factory front spoiler in Chairo blue over tan. Lovely car... the one car I miss the most and wish I had kept. I used to go grocery shopping with it could fit 7 or 8 grocery bags in the trunk as long as I didn't get ice cream :-)

@@Fluterra Black and yellow exterior looks two tone. The same scheme was used on the 512 more sucsesfully. When the 308 Dino was released it was not well recieved so a similar treatment was used along with rebadging it a Ferrari.

This was the very first car I ever rode in, came home from the hospital in one after being born in 77. My dad had a red one with the dino badges. I'd always ask him to just start it up because I loved the sound of the engine.

In fact, it was supposed to be a Lambo ☺️ and yes, it looks really like a typical 1970-1980 Bertone design (Fiat x1/9 for instance).
In 1970, Marcello Gandini designed this car and his employer, Bertone, proposed it to Lamborghini, who refused it and developped another bodyshape for the soon coming Urraco.
At that point, Bertone proposed it to Ferrari who took the deal and 3 years later (1973) was presented the Dino 308 GT4 (and reduced engine capacity 208 GT4).
In 1976 the 308 GT4 endorsed the Ferrari name.
The next model, the Mondial 8, replaced the 308 GT4 in 1980, but Ferrari went back to Pininfarina to design the body.

Great video. You really understand the car. I have for 7 years owned a 1978 Euro RHD model here in UK though it lived in Switzerland for a few years. It had an engine rebuild in 1990 replacing the original sodium valves and new high compression pistons so that today it still gives 237bhp at the wheels on a dyno, which is probably much as it left the factory.
It is a delight to drive. As quick as you need and the handling is just like driving a big go kart. I would not swap it for any newer faster Ferrari

The first Ferrari with a V8 and named after the son of Enzo Ferrari. I read he would visit his son Dino’s grave everyday... Talk about “soul and emotions” in a Ferrari. And it was designed by Marcello Gandini who also designed the Miura and Countach. As a matter of fact, the 308 GT4 is even more “hand built” than modern Ferraris.

Good job on the video. I have almost this exact car, 1975 with the same paint color with boxer trim except my car has a horizontal black stripe about 3/8" wide and about 3/8" above the solid black. These are wonderful cars to drive very reminiscent of a go cart without harshness or bad habits. They are extremely comfortable and roomy inside even for my 6'5" son. Very few mid engined sport scars you can say that about.

One of the best videos that I have seen on cars. I use to own one of these and I could not find fault with anything that you said and was impressed how you conveyed the "Fun" of these cars. This is the only Ferrari/Dino car that I have ever owned, and it is one of my favorites, being an Italian car wrench I have driven a lot of different Ferraris, and with the possible exception of a few 1950's era TR's it is one of the most fun Ferraris to drive. Definitely not the fastest, but a heck of a lot of fun.

Hi Colleen. My first Ferrari was a 308GT4 that I purchased from -- your father -- in 1983. At least 15 years later, I was at a car show in Scottsdale, Arizona, and was told he was there as a sponsor. I forgot what he looked like, but someone pointed him out. As I walked toward him, from at least 30 feet away, he looked at me and said " Hi Steve." Really.
At some point, I traded up to a Testarossa, which is a work of art that belongs in a living room. But as you pointed out, speed isn't everything. The GT4 was simply much more fun to drive. Smaller, more nimble, and a great sound with four webers. I didn't keep the TR very long, and eventually went with a 328GTS. Another terrific car.
    Keep those videos coming !

That car is in fantastic condition and I think the Boxer two-tone color scheme really suits it. Shame about the Fed bumpers though; the original Euro design is so much better integrated and, as you say, lighter. It's also nice that it's still on 14" wheels and 205/70s. The 16s many have swapped to make it easier to find modern tyres but although your wheels aren't actually OEM (they would have 'Campagnola', 'Ferrari' and the size cast in raised lettering around the rim) they look just right on the car. I drove 50,000 miles in one of these in the '90s and absolutely loved it, especially on fast open roads or racetracks where you could keep the momentum up and not worry about the heavy steering at low speed. It was certainly better balanced around corners than the 308GTB. Thank you for a nice review that brought back some good memories. Oh and by the way, your front driver's side sidelight is out.

I liked and subscribed. Great Job. For clarity, when these were not selling, FERRARI sent a bulletin to all dealers telling the "dealers" to modify the car and use BOTH Ferrari and Dino badges on the front. Many just filled the area where the recessed Dino badge is/was and mounted the Ferrari badge and added the horse to the right rear. Horn button... I have the factory bulletin with my GT4 manual. Mine was badged a Dino originally then hacked by the dealer. I had it retrograded back to the original Dino badge.(I have one of the transitional cars between the factory making it a Ferrari badged car) Easy to see the Bulletin using Google... Also of note, this car has US bumpers and Euro side markers. I am guessing when restored, they shaved the ugly US side markers. I like my GT4 more than my F355. More alive, visceral and connected. Again, awesome job with the Vid. Thanks for making it!

I'm surprised she found a street that empty so she could wring it out to move that fast just to get those sounds. But who could fit in the back with no legroom? Then again Lamborghini came out at the same time with the Urraco which was a lousy equivalent to the GT4.
Glad Ferrari came out with the proper 308GTB in '76 and continued into the 80's. That was a sexy car and really looked and performed like a Ferrari, especially in RED!

How about a video on the FIAT Dino that is acting like a wallflower in this video? Speaking of Bertone and Lamborghini the basic design for the 308GT4 was originally one of two that Bertone had submitted to Lamborghini for the Urraco. (Although the prototype's pop up headlamp treatment was a bit "different" it was revised as the design was ironed out for Ferrari and looks much better in its final form.) As an X 1/9 owner it's fun to see all the bits that are also used on higher end cars. The door handles are on both the Urraco and the GT4, the trunk and engine release handles can also be found on the Countach. (It also makes me wonder if prices are marked up for said parts depending on what you are buying it for!)

Ergonomically perfect for the driver with a v8 to die for. Handling and brakes to match. Only mod was a sports exhaust. I once asked a Ferrari buff his opinion.....answer...on the twisty bits nothing to touch it. Sure looks are an acquired taste but it's all about the driving experience. @Smitty world.. yeah Gandini but he didn’t finish the car.. the 308 Pininfarina is just the European version of the Montecarlo with a V8 in the back. And Brembo brakes instead of mine 911 carbo ceramics (but I changed the Lancia’s ) . Engine in mine is a Ingeneri Busso V6 255hp. Champagne colore and black leather seats (certainly not the American Scorpio)! I wanted the 308 Bertone but this stupid pussy bought a Maserati Quattroporte from the eighties instead! Both cars were around 14000€ but I had to get them in Modena where they were both restored in ‘17! 2020 now and the Ferrari goes 80k American dollars! Don’t buy them in their American version!!! Never! And Fuck De Muro and Shmee! Wait wait not Shmee coz he must be underage and you surely won’t be a pedo I guess? Greetings friend petrolhead 🧏🏼‍♀️🏎🏎🏎 ps: fuck my English too. @@alexardies3171 there is some commonality between the 308gt4 and the Lancia Montecarlo: the Fiat Group door handles. For the GTB and GTS there may be the odd electrical bits but the chassis, suspension, interior and engine are not in any way related.

    • @alexardies3171
      @alexardies3171 3 роки тому +1

@ Tim Gosling .. the suspension was upgraded by Koni for the 308 quatrovalvole coz Ferrari wanted to race with them! And they did in the eighties but never officially in group B coz they made the 288GTO ordered by Enzo himself! Sadly people were killed in 86? With that insane Integrale and S4 drove only for a very brief moment they told me! I was born end 90! So? Yeah the Ferrari had a 4cm longer wheelbase but what is 4cm? 15inch wheels instead of the Monte’s 13.. 205-215 tyres (depends on which country) and the nose was lower for their lights! Interior? Yeah of course a different transmission tunnel! Same jaeger clocks but with a 300km/h speedometer. And prancing horses under the counter.. red lightning coz Ferrari. Same leather seats although very rare in the Monte! Ferrari had air-scoops ! The Ferrari is kinda beautiful but the Bertone was really much better on a closed circuit! I drove both my Monte and my garagista’s Ferrari 308 in anger at Spa and I always won with the Lancia on “illegal 195 tyres”! Under-plate is the same! Same length, same height, same width but both had a double outlet (Abarth one) which is not original. Shame that the engines were transverse just like in the Urraco which I personal like.. love coz it’s maybe a lesser Lamborghini but I find her incredible sexy although the engine is way more expensive than the others but keep in mind that the Ferrari always will be a very good investment and certainly in this times.. it will only go up in price! That’s why I said that I’m a stupid 🤦‍♀️buying that Maserati but I don’t need a sport car! I can drive the Alfieri proto and the new MC20 whenever I ask it politely to the big boss. ( I mean only on circuits like Fiorano and Mugello and maybe Arese if I ask coz Maserati made the 8c and 4C for Alfa) and that’s also the reason that I got this Busso V6 in my Monte!

The GT 4 is a far better car than the 308gtb and 328gts/b
( I have owned all three). The handling and setup
is far superior..The car was setup by Niki Lauda.
I drove all three around the Nordschleife the gt4
was by far the best, and more fun. The 308GT 4
Was and is an out and out Ferrari. Just because it
was not designed by Pininferina means nothing.
Just to add many GT4 have been and are still being raced.

I had a Ferrari DIno 246gt which was also not a Ferrari - and the irony of it is that everyone who saw it said it was the best looking Ferrari they had ever seen - even Ferrari Owners Club UK - it even one a prize!!!! - When I did try to correct them - I failed - they simply wouldn't have it. After all, they said, "it was designed by Dino (Alfred) Ferrari - and it was he who suggested mounting the 2.0 litre engine which Ferrari built (not Fiat as is often said) and the car was built in their factory" sooooo.....technically it was a Ferrari....even though it wasn't. Early customers complained about 'plastic chairs and underpower) so like mine they fitted leather and a 2.4 V6 - which also went on to be in the Lancia Stratos including the rally cars. Sadly Alfredo never got to see the finished article having died before it was released.

The 206/246 was not designed by Dino Ferrari. He died 10 years before it was conceived. Alfredino had some minor input into the V6 racing engine of the 1950s which Enzo then named 'Dino' in his memory. Alfredino's only connection with the road cars is the similar configuration of the engine and thus the adopted name. Surprised anyone at FOC UK would tell you otherwise, even though we love 206 and 246 Dinos as an integral part of the Ferrari history, built as they all were at the Maranello factory.

@@timgosling6189 Oh yes - I was instilling a bit of hyperbole in my comment - to address whether the DIno's were real Ferraris or not - but you are right on with Alfredo Though his exact level of involvement is disputed, Dino is said to have had a hand in several key Ferrari designs, notable the 750 Monza and several small-capacity racing V6s. At the tragically young age of 24, Dino fell victim to what is now known as Muscular Dystrophy, passing away in June of 1956. Enzo was devastated, as was his wife Laura, with whom he never quite reconciled afterwards. The Dino series of racing cars, as well as the 206/246 and their successors were named in honor of him.

    • @francisdmn

The original 2.0 litre alu block engine in the 206 was Ferrari built. The 246 2.4L iron block, alu head engines though designed by Ferrari were Fiat built. The 2.4L Dino engines had Dino on the cam covers. The alu block V8 engines in the 308GT4, built by Ferrari, have Ferrari on the cam covers. The 246 was never designed by Dino - he was long since dead. Dino had an interest in the V6 engines, though his input is probably overplayed. So all Ferraris, mainly race cars with V6 engines were named Dino in his memory.

You can see the shadow of the Lancia Stratos in the styling. I find the black paint an unnecessary distraction from an otherwise good design. But it was popular back then, like shoulder pads, big hair, mullets, gold chains and slant nose Porsches. All of which are now cliche in the best way possible.
