I first played Diablo on the PS1. I don't even remember how I came across it. I liked the cover and took it home. I had an insane setup with 4 different tv's and 4 different consoles in 4 giant cubes as my entertainment center. My best friend at the time came down to play some games and I started playing Diablo while he watched TV. Soon, the alluring sound of Tristram caught his ear and he started to watch me play. Once I kept getting gold and better loot, he wanted to join in. Mind you he didn't really care to play games all that much. It was one of those games that doesn't come around that often. A game where you wait in torturous agony all day, waiting to get home to play it. You dream about it. You bathe in it's glow when darkness falls around you. Me and my friend played it from start to finish. Every day was a race to see what waited for us around the corner. We'd be in school drawing maps and creating our own dungeons and wondering what kind of loot we'd get today. I'm thankful it got made. It was a beautiful slice of time in my life that i'll never forget.
"The best had yet to come....." - Hell, I do love diablo 2 and 3 very very much. But those games dident even got close to the creepy and scary atmosphere, that was constant pressent in the first one. I crawled through every turn and corner in the first diablo in dred for being hacked and slashed into pieces by a powerfull demon. In Diablo 2 and 3, I burst through every turn and corner with severed demonheads flying every were, in my quest for more epic loot, not fearing anything. If only this could be combined into a single diablo game of perfection, it would be Blizzards true MASTERPIECE in my repsectively opinion. Bring back the HORROR in this magnificent game world.
6:10 "The group came across like a bunch of gamers making games, rather than some suits trying to grab a quick buck." This single sentence explains everything from Diablo III to Diablo "mobol" :)
My Diablo 1 got corrupted one day, and it stopped regenerating levels. They were same every time, until the game was reinstalled. It made beating it so different.
Fact that Diablo 1 was originaly supposed to be turn based really shows in way characters and monsters move in it. They move like they would be on grid.
Diablo games were never RPG games and hopefully will never be.All three of them are pure hack 'n' slash games. The first two were badass however while the third one is just a generic hack 'n' slash game,it has nothing to do with Diablo,no gothic feel,no scary moments,no isometric maps,no randomized maps, crappy loot even in the expansion,it destroyed the best three characters of the Diablo universe (those who have played it know what I'm talking about,I don't want to spoil it for the rest),no skill points and skill trees,no offline mode, way too short story and the list goes on and on...Let's hope that if there is going to be a Diablo 4 it will be a true Diablo game... Anyway...Awesome video!
what makes an rpg is the inclusion of elements from dungeons and dragons the first role playing game. levels stats and experience define rpgs, so its is a action role playing game, and u can describe the game play as hack and slash style, people mainly call this action role playing.
bfdnfdnmdnm sdmh s No,what makes an RPG (as the term says itself) is the "role playing".Since you're familiar with DnD then you probably know that its number one element is the role playing.Skyrim is an action RPG on an open world setting for example. Levels, stats, and experience are also found in hack 'n' slash games, but this doesn't make them RPGs.For example God of War has levels and experience.Does this make it an RPG? Hell no! Diablo has zero role playing so by definition it has nothing to do with RPGs.I know that many people call it RPG,but seriously the term "RPG" is used so wrong and lightly by many people that it has almost lost its meaning completely.I've even heard people calling Warcraft 3 an RPG! Does this mean that it is? Of course not. It's pure RTS on a fantasy setting.
god of war does not have levels and experience and stats, sorry. role playing video games started from fans of d&d, d&d was the direct influence for the first role playing video games ultima and wizardry, and those games in turn influenced dragon warrior and final fantasy, this is why people say zelda is not a role playing game no stats or levels. the modern rpg started as a video game medium for dungeons and dragons. the first game ever called a role playing game before any video games even existed. and how is skyrim so different from diablo, u collect items, u talk to people, level up, choose your own stats. your one of those people that tries to define role playing games because "oh u play the role of a character" and using that generic definition you could call just about anything an rpg. where if you compare the game to the ORIGINAL RPG dungeons and dragons, the idea gets alot more specific.
bfdnfdnmdnm sdmh s Probably pointless to say this now, but God of War actually does have levels and experience. you get red orbs from enemies which act as xp and you spend those on specific weapons to get new moves, combos and magic spells.
Hey just watch GT videos on youtube from now on. Don't use the GT site. Drain viacom of their money which is too much ads on the site for revenue. Close the GT forums viacom.

I agree with you. Diablo 1 is awesome.
Doesn't look like D4 will provide this.

06:09 The group came across as a bunch of gamers making games, rather than some suits..." Fast forward a couple of years and welcome suits.
Thank GOD for PS version. It was most important thing in my life.
My Diablo 1 got corrupted one day, and it stopped regenerating levels. They were same every time, until the game was reinstalled. It made beating it so different.
huh... og Diablo got some inspiration from og X-Com?
makes sense to me, with both games sitting on my top 5 favorites due to atmosphere
It's crazy that Blizzard had a run of Warcraft II, Diablo, and Starcraft. What a time to be alive!
I had so much fun in that world. Would like to visit it again.
Tristram is still my goto study and work song. My coworkers get so annoyed by it after the 4-5 hour mark.

Oh my god! That was awesome!
Sweet! I wasn't much into PC gaming way back then, I'm happy I get to learn more about Diablo now. Thanks GT
Blizzard always seems like such chill bros in these retrospectives
Man... this is why i love Gametrailers. But i think that gametrailers missed the oportunity to talk more about the song tristram.
Thank you GT for this, made my day.
I love Retrospectives! So happy they're back!
this Video is just awesome ... can't wait for part two ... and more games as well
I thought Diablo was supposed to be a claymation, how come that's not mentioned here?
please make more videos like this,GT.Remind me much to Machinima's All Your History series.
Where did you get all the high quality pre-rendered of the original models?
Man, I miss Game Trailers.
Fact that Diablo 1 was originaly supposed to be turn based really shows in way characters and monsters move in it. They move like they would be on grid.
OHHHHHHHH YESSSSSS! THANK YOU GT!
I'd love to see a D1 remake with D3 graphics.
Ohhh Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 LOD.
The best Game EVER.
i miss you game trailers
Where's part 2??????
great video 10/10 . Diablo and DOOM are two of my favorite games of all time :)
9:55 lol there is no movement speed in D1.
Amazing video, though.
...Well, it's official: playing D2 for like a week... seems to happen like once a year lol.
Can't wait till it's on ps4
Great Retrospective, but, where is the Metal Gear Timeline?
I want part 2z
Is diablo 1 will be available for ps4?

robert whyte
whats your question?
15:00 balls on chin.

you are a fucking idiot you pick roles aka role playing game dumb ass
Hell....Diablo II was incredible...
Diablo III though.....sold his soul to capitalism.. xD
Diablo 3 = Gauntlet with Improvement.
Diablo 3 became pretty good, but you're right, the auction house was a joke.
cause diablo 3 was made by blizzard, unlike 1 and 2.
I forgot d3 was a thing. That’s how non-phenomenal it was.
ahh the days of free multiplayer.....
Shoulda figured it would be more about other stuff than Diablo, it's a very short series...
LOL Phreak ?!
