Polynesians also had canoes/Va'a to explore the whole Pacific Ocean. It's cool how similar we are ✌🏽
Well,it is believed that some of the Native Americans are Polynesian type and Chinese looking people, with the Polynesian being older and more in South America than North.
I guess canoes were the first things made after the natives crossed the pacific ocean
@@pietrycranberry6621 no its not. Many Pacific Northwest tribes and clans resemble and reflect Polynesia a large amount. Coastal Salish are known to travel on trade routes from southern Alaska to Northern California.
Polynesians explored and had trade routes too.
They were sailors so absolutely had boats, but our ancestors used the name which canoes come from. Alot of us have similar culture like africans have so many cultures that mirror both our people's.
@@pietrycranberry6621 some journals actually call the natives negroes.
Because of the people in these comments, I will say this. Since the beginning, humanity has used similar boats, cooking techniques, etc. However, the ones described in the video are specific. Take for example the Bangka boat. It looks slightly similar to a canoe however, they have differences like any other. This video is merely pointing out Native American cultures that have become a very recognizable part of American culture today.
Hope this helped somehow, I love learning about different cultures and get excited😂
Who cares
But this is not really specific because regular native Americans, even in Virginia, have canoes like that and BBQ is a thing world wide.
No they are not. People in the Americas are delusional
The colonizers are our ancestors too
She's a pretty women but she has a tiny brain 😢
@@Ramfisdt.presidentePED2024 sad but true they did the Tainos and the surrounding islands dirty. Those so called ancestors are not your direct descendants. The Spaniards actually raped and tortured the Tainos (your people)
Polynesians also had canoes (we call them « vaka/va’a/waka or wa’a » depending on the language)
The same goes for many other people like the Melanesians, Micronesians, Aboriginal Australians, South East Asians, East Asians, Africans, Sámi people and so on…
…..and they had THERE OWN name for them 🙃 Canoe is Taíno Arawak PERIOD
@@OkaniLuna
I see, I thought you meant the embarcation in itself in your video.
As for the word, I agree, since I stated in my previous comment how we Polynesians call these.

We all lived like this at one point just in europe or Scandinavia 😂 before we learned to navigate the seas but tiano indian culture is mad cool been to PR before its awesome
Atavism is one hell of a drug. Canoes, barbecue and bathing are things that many cultures arrive at WITHOUT direct input. Saying any particular culture “invented” these things is a prime example of what happens when you learn history through anecdote without real discipline.
The cherry on top is that they don't specify from what island those words originated from because many of them had more than one arawak tribes.
There are archetypes that are consistent throughout all cultures. The word "canoe" may be of Arawak origin but sea and river vessels very similar if not identical to the canoe have existed since time immemorial. So is cooking over and open pit. Culture in the Americas is a combination of the cultures of all of our ancestors. Those who were indigneous, ensalved and colonizers.
Facts
Canoe is a Taíno word. Originally pronounced canoa
Barbeque/Barbicú is a Lukunu ("Taíno") word as well. And I dont get your meaning with American culture being a mixture...pre-Columbian specific, no. Modern, absolutely.
@@gregrobinette8620 I never said that pre Columbian culture was a mixture. Obviously it is today though which is precisely why we have Spanish, French and English surnames. I said that cooking over an open pit is something that people did all , uninfluenced by each other, hence the archetype. The etymology of word that we now use in the English language for that style of cooking came from the Lukunu but they did not invent the method of cooking.
Loven your look and vibe❤

Fyi American History they teach is filled with so called your “culture” and that side of the world. Give respect where its due. Yea you guys had Roman Bath houses but Greco- Roman "baths" were not for washing up, but centers of orgies. It was the Europeans lack of hygiene that kept them stuck in savagery for so many millennia's. In fact, the Native Americans/American Indians said they were stinky and they attempted to teach the Europeans how to bathe, and they rejected it! how to grow crops like Maize, Potatoes, Melons, Papaya, Beans, esc. (Over 80 percent of the worlds food crops are indigenous to these lands) and settle down, we had aquifers that brought fresh water and a functioning sewer system that they took and brought over there. The colonization of Africa/America was partly due to their diseases they brought which killed millions. Educate yourself on OUR culture ✌🏽

Love it taino pride
I wish there was a day were tainos can come together and celebrate our ancestors like they do powwows in america for tribes people to gather and pay homage to their ancestors.
Yea but you gotta define taino because most people from the Caribbean have some taino or arowak or carib blood but basically nobody has any significant amount. Old world diseases wiped out most of the indigenous (genetically speaking)and the fact that is hard to escape diseases when you are
on a island with them. The people that have the "look" that people associate with indigenous peoples are really mostly of European and west african descent because if they didnt have those genes the diseases would have disposed of their ancestors. It is what it is
@@macalloway1Maybe not a significant amount but as far as the ones carrying the dna can still pay refudge and revive small pieces of the culture or language to represent in pow wow gatherings. Most PRs and Dominicans are roughly ranged 30%- 8% that being highest and lowest I’ve seen.
@Renzee-ct4wz but on average how much taino dna do Caribbean latinos carry? Probably no more than the European blood in African Americans and most people don't consider African Americans as European unless they have an identifiable white parent. It crushes me to see a culture effectively wiped out. I still meet indigenous people that speak the languages of the maya and secondary spanish and I wish they continued to speak the original languages but for work and for society they and their kids learn english and spanish causing them to lose a little more of that identity. The Taínos were native to the island of Puerto Rico.
And alot of other places in the Caribbean including Florida

Before the islands [puerto Rico, Cuba, hispanola] were inhabited they were a tribes people who lived on the east coast of U.S historians say Tainos ancestors were of the Arawak Indians. 2nd gen American here. Been through a lot in my life... Was in the hospital the other day and I was searching for an answer to the truth, but now I realized today with the help of some nature and some 🌿💨
that we're all just one people and we have to connect to our ancestors and our true people not where we currently are in society or the system. It's been a journey after my existential crisis almost a year ago back in January-Mayish and since I started seeking help I started learning more about Spirituality and how to heal and meditate. I've also done extensive research on the origins of religion, the universe and governments, and now after finally going through the seeking to prevent my younger cousin from facing the same intergenerational trauma that we've all faced and of course that blew up back at me and triggered painful memories... I then started to break down and try my best to explain the truth about the origins and secrets about Monotheistic religions like Catholicism and how they're indoctrinated into believing all of this when in reality is isn't all the truth and there's a lot about entheogens used in ancient times with religion to connect with higher beings that they have to learn about. I tried my best but they thought I was crazy. I was also angry at my mom because of the emotional neglect and things she did to me as a child and it just got out of hand. Now I'm at my dad's side of the family and I'm doing my best to learn more about our roots and how to go through the stages of Spirituality.
Stay strong relative, let God guide you, give you strength. Damn those who attack you 🙏🏽🪶

And yet were the savages 😂
Savage by whose standard? Anyone back then would call something that they weren’t familiar with as savage. Hence why social issues are what they are.

I was raised in my mama’s kitchen helping her cooking out Dominican family recipes and going to church 4 days a week🤣🤣🤣. But yet like I said, any person back then (especially ancient Europeans) would call cultural aspects that they are unfamiliar with “savage “ (Examples: every culture that was outside of Great Britain, France, and Spain)…remember even when there was a large migration of Irish and Italian people to the US, the immigrants were disrespected and called savages because they were different.

It depends on your definition. If you’re talking about 100% native blood then yeah they have not found anyone today like that but their descendants exists and are mixed but still continue their traditions to honor them. The conquest was more brutal in the Caribbean than the rest of the Americas. Although all of it was pretty terrible.

Actually, the Indians are not Taino they are Arawak. The term in arawak language Taino means "Good people." If you're from Puerto Rico, the original name is Boriken. That makes you Borikua or Borincano. Puerto Rican is not our identity.
Native American is a term given to, used by, recognized as Apache, Mohican, Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Sioux, Chickasaw, etc in the United States. Taino Indians were more inclusive to Puerto Rico as Eskimo Indians are to Alaska and the Métis tribes to Canada. Not forgetting the Indians in the Americas❤❤❤
“In the us”
No one forgot the "Indians" in the Americas, the Caribbean is definitely in America. Lol. Also, personally, Native American is a continent wide thing, not U.S. specific. The countries, matter in fact, dont hold any weight to the pre-Columbian era. I dont mean for this to be agressive, God bless you relative 🙏🏽🪶

😂 I gotta hear the BS you got in your head, what's the difference?
Correction the natives in America are not Indians that Christopher Columbus mistake calling the natives Indians because he thought he was in india. The natives tribes never called each other Indians only by the tribes name 🤦♂️
As a Native American myself, I approve that this is all true, especially the last one where we taught them how to bathe due to the colonizers thinking that water was evil in all ways. It’s very frustrating to learn our history but we must so we don’t have to let the government hide us from the past, Ahó.
Very sure you hear that you're beautiful 😍 all of the time.
However I am not them and this comes from my spirit to yours. I see your beauty from the inside out. Keep your spirit pure my indigenous sista. Peace N Love
Whenever they say "White people are the real Americans", I'm like "This is madness"!
They generalize the whole continent based off a few terrufying nations. Also as if Europe wasnt equally/more savage than Native Americans. Confusing part is they contradict themselves and are overall ignorant, and so many are as dumb that they 'win' the arguement...
But I always love learning about how my ancestors found the foreigners societies utterly ridiculous! God bless 🙏🏽🪶
@NoBlock-kd5of Karens
I just have to correct something that was said in this video. You stated that BBQ was stolen by the colonizers. To steal something means you take something away from someone. So the fact that everyone is capable of using this cooking technique means it was not stolen. It was learned. I think people should be more careful and deliberate with their words as to only speak facts and keep emotions out of it.
The fact about bathing. European's, during those days, were historically "allergic" to bathing and cleanliness.. !!
Europeans didn’t know anything really they learned from indigenous people a lot of things, and from Africans tribes as well. They are a prideful people of stealing peoples ideas and making it there own.
There are entire BATH houses in Rome that predate the Spaniards finding the New World by over a thousand years. It's common knowledge that Scandinavian populations bathed regularly (about once a week) in Medieval times... also before the founding of the New World. Mediterranean peoples used olive oil as soap and Western Europe used a mixture of water, lye, and animal fat. Not to mention, Europeans have been bathing in streams and other water sources since Stone Age times. Pretty obvious they weren't taught by natives to bathe.
@@michaeloshea488 It was literally a sin to bath
@@ryjitarose5590 Visiting a mixed bath house was considered a sin by the Catholic Church, not bathing itself
@@michaeloshea488
I can't find anything to counter your argument, but Europeans clearly weren't hygienic, far from it. As you said once a week, which is absolutely disgusting. The Mēxihkah couldn't handle the stinking odor of the Spaniards so they waved them with big fans and lit incenses to ease the smell. The Roman bathhouses were packed and they had communal sponges for wiping. Even many white people to this day don't wash their limbs.
What about Arabs teaching Europeans to bathe?
If you really were native you wouldnt say taino since that was a term the spanish used to generalize the natives they found
What are you talking about? I say kichwa. Made up by the Spaniards because my ancestors didn’t create such ethnic divides with pointless labeling within the same people. If we described something it wasn’t a fixed term enforced by government classifications. The terms were just use to the describe the others. If they fished they were known as fishermen, if they lived near the mountains they were mountain dwellers etc. and if that changed they’d receive another name. now we have these labels enforced by government and education so we are forced to use them. If I speak kichwa amongst kichwa I can use our preferred term Runa but if they don’t speak kichwa or Runashimi I’m forced to use what they know, or else they say what the heck is a Runa. Also they refuse to popularize our preferred terms. We also like the term Abya yala which basically unites us all in the Western Hemisphere.

But you guys barbacued with fish not pork ribs
It's true we got the English *words* Canoe, and Barbecue, from Taino vocabulary. However. That doesn't mean Taino invented Canoes or barbeques. Potato is another word we partially got from Taino. But that doesn't mean they were the civilization who first cultivated it. That honor goes to the people of the Andes.
They had no written language 🤦🏾♂️💯

🇵🇷❤
Virtually every culture has BBQ prepared in similar ways. Khorovads, shashlik, chabob, kebab.
What's wrong with people in the comments, why are some people so pressed with this video educating us about Taino culture??
Because it’s saying “Americans” were credited with inventing the canoe and stole the word canoe from Taino , but NATIVE Americans used them and never called them canoe for century’s. It’s impossible to say who made it first (Native American or Taino) but plausible to say they could both be invented in two places around same time.
Wether or not they stole the word canoe shouldn’t matter because colonizers ( real ones not the woke cancel culture Version ) gave it that name way later in the whole timeline of things
she doesnt know anything about taino culture she is just chattin

Beyond just Taino culture Taino is more so the Caribbeans (West Indies/ West Indians) but it still plays a role tho, a major one because America and West Indies are actually connected. Places like Florida, Georgia, The Carolinas, Virginia, & Louisiana Are considered to be a part of the West Indies and the West Indies is a subregion of North America . All of the Caribbeans (greater and lesser Antilles) plus the Americas (south, central and north ) we are all considered to be American Indians . There’s way more influence than just from tainos because there’s over hundreds of thousands of tribes within the continent . The tainos/ lucayans are the ones who the colonizers encountered first in the Bahamas people like Hernando De Soto, Christopher Columbus, Giovanni De Verrazzano, Hernan Cortes, Fransisco Pizzaro, Vasco Da Gama Etc.. read into the written records of all those voyages to get a more proper perspective perspective on it . Many American Indians were shipped to the Caribbeans during the King Phillip’s War (1675-1676) against the English Colonial settlers . During the war, New England colonies routinely shipped American Indians as “slaves” (prisoners of war) to places like Barbados, Bermuda, Jamaica, The Azores, Spain, and even Liberia & North Africa (tangier).
It's still American culture. No need to act all smug and condescending about this.
Two things Americans steal from Indigenous people: Land and Culture.
It’s not about being condescending. Its about truth and factual history. Americans of. European descent love to erase the history of indigenous and African people.

You hear the part she says my ancestors created? Or the part she says they used canoes to travel to other islands and train. Taínos are native indigenous to Puerto Rico and many other islands aswell as the Caribs which where indigenous to Cuba. You also have many tribes in South America like the Aztecs, Mayans, Mapuche, Tupi. You travel a bit up to Northern America and Canada and you’ll also find many famous tribes like Apache, Sioux, Cherokee, Chayenne, the Cree and Algonquin. My point here is that all these tribes are linked some way or another. Most people here in the comments may like to say that Canadians invented canoes and that Australians invented bbq. But reality is that it was all indigenous tribes no matter how you want slice it.
Cubans are also Taino. The Caribs were to the east of the Tainos, not the west.
