I am having a hard time drawing from a tablet from scratch right now
But drawing with pencil on a sketch pad, scanning it, and tracing the work with the tablet helped me remedy it quick.
This might help people who are moving from trad. to digital

So I saw this on my recommended videos and was like "do I need to watch this? I've been drawing on my tablet for a bit, I think I know the basics by now." but something was like "yeah but you don't want to miss some obvious beginner thing and stunt your growth, right?" so, unlike I normally would have done, I clicked it.
The first 10 minutes was all stuff that I already knew, as expected, but then you mentioned the Intuos having a slot at the back with replacement nibs. Now THIS was new info to me, so I looked at the top and back of my tablet and lo and behold, a bunch of functions I wasn't aware of, AND three brand-new, untouched replacement nibs because the person I bought this from used probably never found them, either.
Thank you, UA-cam algorithm, for recommending this, and thank you, Aaron, for reminding me why I should never think I have already mastered the basics.

This primer video is *gold* for anyone that's trying to decipher through how to even work with their tablet(s). I also have the Wacom Intuos and the Wacom 27qhd and have wondered about how to work between the two and/or how to use them (I am a total beginner when it comes to digital painting) and this video walks you through really practical, day-to-day details beyond what you might learn from a manual. This and a few other videos you have put together have been IMMENSELY helpful. I am now subscribed and a fan :) Thank you for publishing super helpful videos that are easy to follow.

You are right about the alignment of a tablet with the screen. An awkward position would make it difficult on the cursor/screen orientation for newbies.
I am pretty sure this would be much easier for me to draw and paint than by using a mouse which is so hard to control doing different strokes and lessen the need to make a customized brushes.

@@aaronrutten I still have a Wacom serial-port ArtPad 2 that I used during the Win 3.1 era. It would probably still work if I get around to resurrecting one of the dinosaur 486 laptops I used it with (just for giggles--nothing important mind you). I'd probably fashion a battery pack to run it since it relied on a wall wart plugged into its serial connector.

Hi Aaron, thanks for all you're still doing for the artists' community ! 🤓
My favorite tip : the settings that you can tune inside the software you are using to draw (Leonardo from GetLeonardo for example).
It is so helpfull !.. and convenient !.. It makes a huge difference, for example in inking... no stress with the pressure sensitivity, it's as you custumised it !
One tip of mine that is so easy, usefull and enjoyable : suscribing to your channel !
It is the best way to win time, improve efficiency and quality's work ! 😁

Sometimes, when I've been working hot and heavy with my Huion, I suddenly notice that it has swiveled about thirty or forty degrees. This is actually a good thing because the wrist doesn't work as well in every orientation. Mostly, I like it squared up, but it can be a lot easier to paint sometimes when it's turned.

Great tutorial! this is very helpful. Thank you. I am big a fan of XP-Pen and have been using them exclusively for the past 5 years, my last tablet was an Artist 15.6 Pro drawing tablet with screen 16" .
As for software, most my art time I've been using Photoshop, but recently moved to Clip Studio Paint. I love both, there are features I miss from Photoshop, but Clip has nearly everything else. Photoshop is incredibly complex and intimidating as a beginner, it took me years to learn it, so I don't blame you for feeling pretty wary about it.
Different drawing softwares excel for different styles of drawing, so the best software will be strongly based on the style of drawing you're doing, but nearly all software will work for any style, some just work smoother with certain styles.

Well Aaron, thanks for the video, I came on here looking for techniques on drawing with a tablet but this primer video has helped me understand the fundamentals and I'm smarter because of it lol, I've just bought the XP-Pen Deco 03 and its a very good tablet so, all I have to do now is see what features it will do that have been mentioned here. off for a lazy Sunday of relaxed learning.

I may be getting a Huion 1060 drawing tablet (has no screen) for Christmas from a friend (he is getting a new tablet, so he wants to hand it down to me since he knew I didn't have one and I pretty much can't afford a lot) so this video is helping quite a bit!

I recently got a Ugee tablet (10 in wide, and i think 5 in long for the drawing area?) and this helped. I got it in July and now I've gotten really used to it, and this helped me improve. I use Firealpaca, its similar to IbisPaint but a little more complicated and fewer brushes. I recommend it for beginners!

It really just feels like the cheaper and ultimately and fundamentally inferior option to having a proper inbuilt screen. Especially if you are just getting into it.

Ot depends on your budget, you can make great art with both, but bad screens will hinder you more than no screen, plus parallax sucks.

I appreciate your perspective on the tablet texture and nib friction. I see a lot of complaints but you put it in a physics perspective that kind of squashed those cons in my opinion. I think I'll finally get an intuos pro.

I think I broke the wacom pressure viewing bar thing. XD ^^''
when I press down, it doesn't show anything.
in the start I thought I broke the pen bc when I drew I couldn't see anything, but realized I just had the same color on as the canvas had.
but I can draw perfectly fine.
it's just the bar that broke lol.
but anyways, I love the tutorial! I have a hard time keeping attitention to vids, but I could actually hold my focus, and i didn't start to feel bored, and I learned a lot! I always thought that the program was bad at sensing pressure sentensivety. it was just the wacom settings heh.

2:00 is there a tablet where you can push the cursor instead of having the whole screen as a pad?

  • @CornSnakeLance

If you have windows then you can use Microsoft paint/paint 3D as your first art program to get used to drawing and moving around the cursor with a pen.

Thanks this saved me from buying a "screen" tablet for 350 Eur. I'd rather get used to the "offset" between hand and eyes than deal with parallax or the tip not being where it is displayed on the screen (though I am aware of the irony that on a non-screen tablet the tip is NEVER on the place displayed on the screen, but you know what I mean :D)

Thank you for the tutorial!! I have one question: around 5:20 you say that you need to learn to draw with smaller gestures on a small tablet. I've been hearing all along that drawing from the wrist is not good and you need to use these big elbow/shoulder gestures when drawing. So what's up with that? Are large strokes really better or is it arbitrary and dependent on your desired output?
I've been doing small doddles and illustrations on paper all my life and I've never really needed to use these broad arm movements... Does that make my technique bad? :(

    • @aaronrutten
      @aaronrutten  6 років тому

It doesn't make your technique bad, it just makes it more difficult to draw.
