- Based on Henry van Dyke's classic, The Story of the Other Wise Man, this fictional story set in Biblical times is told in gently comic terms. A Magi named Artaban (Martin Sheen) sees a sign in the heavens that he hopes will lead him and his faithful servant to the Messiah. Artaban takes with him three precious gifts to present to the Messiah. For 33 years Artaban pursues Jesus, only to miss Him at every turn.
Along the way, Artaban uses his gifts to help people in dire need. He now has nothing to present to the Messiah when he finds Him. The story culminates on Easter Sunday as Artaban, old and dying, finally encounters the new King, bringing peace to his life. A deeply moving experience examining what true faith really means.

It was December of 1957 and our entire family of 7 was crammed into a small apartment in Cincinnati, Ohio. We rarely watched TV. But my dad decided we would watch the Fourth Wise Man. It was a magical (in the best sense of the word) experience. Seven of us gathered together in a small apartment living room that had this luxury, a fireplace around which we were gathered while we watched The Fourth Wise Man. And I remember noting that my mom, who was tiny, less than 5 ft. tall, was sitting in my dad's lap. My dad was almost 6 ft. tall. I, the oldest, was 16. None of us forgot that Christmas, in large part because of this wonderful production. Several different times I have read the story out loud to church gatherings which included children and adults. Christmas of 1989, I happened across Henry Vandyke's book, an edition that also included a preface in which VanDyke tells us his story of the birth of this story: birthed after a year of enormous pain. Not all editions of this story include this preface, but it is included in the edition published by the Crossings Book Club in Garden City, NY. \

This was one of our favorite Christmas stories that our Mother read to us. Dad always played the Wiseman...he was very dramatic, and we always rolled around laughing! He loved that!
But, it was not always a happy story, yet it made us happy in a strange way.Years later, we finally understood why our parents never explained.
Martin Sheen a fine actor. As usual from Mr Sheen a mighty performance.

The most profound part of the film.
To me this encapsulates what Christ taught regarding how people are judged. How we treated others, what we did for others.
Praise my Lord. His name is above all names. He s king of kings. Jesus christ is my Lord. Hallelujah.
We were created to know, love, and serve Him. This movie should make us stop and rethink how we are living our lives. Are we doing all we can to help others. To put others always before ourselves and our needs.( Matthew 25:31-46) The ending always brings me to tears. Very good movie to watch.
i love this movie! young Artaban (with his grumbling servant Orontes)) spends his life hoping to find Jesus to offer precious gems worthy of a King..

Sometimes it can be hard to believe the TRUTH. That is why GOD gives all a measure of FAITH. I believe we can even share that, if we are willing to receive it just like a trusting child. GOD IS TRUSTWORTHY AND HIS LOVE NEVER FAILS ❤️🔥

Thank you for sharing this, I remember seeing this movie many years ago, I always ❤️ loved this film, great story and great actors/actresses, and the ending especially on what God actually wants from us, not the rituals, but the dignity, respect, kindness and caring compassion towards others. This is farther beyond our understanding and is far more valuable than all the riches the world has to offer. HIGH 5……God bless everyone.

Fabulous! Gifts given freed children... what shall we do? My greatest thought is to free those from bondage. Forgive, give freedom to the captive of unforgiveness.... Allow the grace to permeate the souls of all .. if you give freedom, Jesus can enter the heart.

Many of us wish we could do something special for God....year after year. And littler things are all we can do. And what we planned to give does go to God but it's always little things. But Jesus does use the little things. The loaves and fish. The widow's mite. It's all worth it to some day hear well done, thou good and faithful servant. Just to hear well done

The bible only says wisemen, not how many. It is true that 3 different kinds of gifts were given but that does not mean there were 3 wisemen nor does it mean there weren't.
I was never crazy about Orontes he complains about everything.
I always saw Orontes as the comic relief character of the movie. I really enjoyed his character.
