Dear All, DPDT relay means Double Pole Double Throw Relay. Double pole is mispronounced here as Double port @ 1:32. Kindly take a note on this, when viewing/listening to the video. Regards, EA.
Excellent video. Sir, how do i incorporate a switch to this ATS whereby when grid goes off and the generator starts, i can use the switch to put off the generator from inside the house if the generator is not needed at that time. Thanks
You can arrange an additional two pole breaker (inside of your house) series to the generator control circuit breaker. It can be used for this purpose. However, for these type of work you need to get help from a good electrician.
Hello, where do we get the neutral for the load from? How do we ensure there is always a neutral cable from both supplies without them interconnecting?
Sorry for that I have not shown it in the video. As done for the 3 power lines, you need to get two neutral lines separately from the grid and from the generator to the junction box, and connect it. From the junction box, only one neutral line to the load. 3 pole contactors on grid side and generator side, need to be changed with 4 pole contactors to provide neutral wire through it.
This was an explanation thank you Sir please what are components that make up this design and connection? I know 2 magnetic contactor, 1 phase failure relay, 3 Double pole double throw 8 relay, 2 AC double pole breaker, 5 Timers Secondly on the battery relays you connected port 1 and 3 of start and port 1 and 3 of stop to what components is it 1 and 2 start- push and 3 and 4 stop-push components?
OK but I have a question how would this design change if you you wanted to build an ATS that changes between 3 sources. An example would be if you had grid, solar backup and generator in that priority order. Would be great to know as there's almost no info available on this specific topic
Bro, it’s simple, just make another same set of panel and it’s out considered as second prior after the grid, for example just do this circuit with solar and generator and it’s out again do with grid supply, in this way you can make infinite number of power sources 💪😉
Building an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) that can switch between three sources - grid, solar backup, and generator - in a priority order requires a combination of relays, contactors, and control logic to manage the transitions seamlessly. Will try to do a separate video on this, when time permits.
All the timer relays used here are ON DELAY type. Actually we can use ON DELAY timer relays for average OFF DELAY functions also, by using NO and NC contacts properly.
Thank you. You can use this for single phase generator wiring too. Instead of 3 phase 3 wires on power side of two contactors, use live wire and neutral wire on L1 and L3 terminals. Keep L2 terminal empty. Control wiring is the same as shown in this video.
@@ElectroAcademyEASir, if this procedure for single phase Is followed accordingly for a generator with battery and key starter, will the generator turn on automatically when the grid supply is restored
For single phase generator, same two magnetic contactors can be used. Instead of three phase lines, live wire and the neutral wire can be taken through it. One terminal on both contactors will be empty.
Yes. You can use it on single phase grid with single phase generator. Normally, generator should start with one start attempt. If there are dificulties with starting, we need to check and correct it first.
great lectures credible and amazing. any chance of scholarships on electrical and electronic engineering into your reputable and renowned Electro Academy..
Please if am to design this ATS for a load wattage of 25,000watts in facility what is the the size of panel by millimeters I should request to buy? That would contain these components
Actually the size of the panel is to be decided according to the component sizes and the relevant wiring work too. Some component sizes might be different according to their brands also. If you are not an Electrician, better to get help from one to get good idea on sizing of the panel board.
Thank you. Standard arrangement is shown here with current flow animation, mainly for the ones who need to understand the automatic starting of the generator easily.
Yes. You need to have a battery charger (powered by grid side) to keep the battery fully charged, in order to start the generator during a power outage.
Generator manual start button wires need to be connected to the two green points marked as start connection on the diagram for automatic starting. Generator stop button wires need to be connected to the two red dots marked as stop connection for auto stopping of the generator. If you need an auto - manual switch for generator, connection from the battery can be provided through a 2 pole breaker. This breaker OFF position will act as generator on manual starting only, still the power will automatically change over after you start the generator manually.
Excellent explanation! Just one question though: contactors have 3 main poles and 2 accessory poles?? The ones I usually see have just one accessory...
Normally contactors have 2 auxiliary contact points, NO and NC. But, according to the requirement, you can purchase heavy duty contactors with 4 auxiliary contact points, two NO and two NC points. There are contactors where you can add more auxiliary contact points on to it also. Additional contact points can be slide on to the contactor top and lock it. It should be done according to the manufacturer recommendations only.
@@michaelisongekwere1402 Yes. Further, you can use a 2 pole breaker when wiring 12 volt power from the battery to this system. Breaker "ON" position is your generator automatic start/stop operating position. Similarly, breaker "OFF" position will act as generator manual start/stop position. In both these positions power transferring will be fully automatic, although you have to start the generator manually, in breaker "OFF" position.
Introduce a two pole Isolator or a breaker and take battery wires to the auto start and stop connections through it. Isolator "ON" position will act as "AUTO" mode. Isolator "OFF" position will be the "MANUAL" position. When Isolator is at OFF position, you need to start the generator manually when grid power is not there. It will supply power to the contactor top and generator side control line breaker, allowing power to transfer automatically to the load.
Timer 1 is there to make generator to run on load for 2 to 3 minutes even after grid power is available. If grid power goes off again within this period, generator is on load and power supply will not be interupted. Although recommended, you can omit this timer if intermittent power disturbances are minimal.

sir please make next video on latching relay plz.
Ok. When the time permits.
all ok.
When my grid off then 3 hours Later generator start.
How to set the time
Hope you can get help from an electrician to correct this fault.

Please explain how Manual and Auto mode is achieved in ATS
Introduce a two pole Isolator or a breaker and take battery wires to the auto start and stop connections through it.
Isolator "ON" position will act as "AUTO" mode.
Isolator "OFF" position will be the "MANUAL" position.
When Isolator is at OFF position, you need to start the generator manually when grid power is not there.
It will supply power to the contactor top and generator side control line breaker, allowing power to transfer automatically to the load.
