  • Many of us parents create fantasies around who our children will be and how we will parent them. When these fantasies don’t come true, we feel anxious and frustrated and often blame our children for this. In this episode, Dr. Shefali helps two parents understand that the root of the problem is not their children but instead their unrealistic expectations.
Dr. Shefali is a NYT bestselling author of The Conscious Parent, and The Awakened Family. She is also a clinical psychologist, an international speaker and a wisdom teacher, integrating Eastern philosophy with Western psychology.

OMG. Eye opening. The last parent reminds me so much of my childhood and now I realize where the fear of failure comes from.

I love everything you said about boundaries and I’m not disagreeing. But I think it’s always a great idea to also consider dealing with fear directly. In this case fear of food. Trusting yourself about what to eat is one thing, but I personally have experienced and can recognize fear of certain foods and it can live on as orthorexia if not dealt with. People in eating disorder recovery talk a lot of about facing “fear foods” and intuitive eating and learning how to feel in our bodies. Overcoming the fear is huge. I would recommend looking into this. This is all a conversation about trust. Building deeper trust in the home would be so life altering.
I don’t eat Takis. I’m not saying everyone needs to eat Takis. Or allow them in their house. But there is an elephant in the room here.
I say this because I have this dynamic in myself. Orthorexic inner mom and rebellious inner child driven by flavor (down to the being drawn to pungent strong tastes and specific textures, only wants like 3 go to things). I’m living it too 😂. But I’m telling you, what has helped me are the tools for treating the orthorexic inner parent. The ones I said above.
As an adult I realize…My mom had this too and even though she didn’t do it to me, I still picked up on it and took it on, learned it.

So 👍 good, I have made s conscious choice to home school to let go of the grades and comparison and allow my child to create a tailored learning plan based on their interests and skills. Doing this work on myself prepared me for this journey. Thanks Dr Shefali for your profound insight to help others.
