- The Yaesu VX-6R is a robust and versatile handheld transceiver (HT) that is ideal for both pre-disaster and post-disaster scenarios. This tri-band radio operates on the 2m, 70cm, and 222MHz bands, providing you with more options to communicate with others. Additionally, the radio has a large number of pre-programmed frequencies, including weather forecast stations, shortwave Voice of America-style broadcasts, and international news sources. This feature makes it incredibly easy to listen to a wide range of frequencies right out of the box without any additional programming required.
One of the key advantages of the VX-6R is its sturdy construction. Unlike many other budget HTs, the VX-6R is rated as IPX7, meaning it can withstand submersion in up to 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes without equipment failure. Additionally, it has a good shock rating, which ensures that it can handle being dropped or jostled without breaking. The antenna port is also intelligently designed, with the SMA male adapter residing in the antenna itself rather than within the radio, reducing the likelihood of breakage and simplifying replacement.
The VX-6R is also incredibly user-friendly, with a large number of intuitive features and an easy-to-use interface. The radio is designed to be ergonomic and comfortable to hold, even for extended periods, and features a bright and clear display that is easy to read in both bright sunlight and low-light conditions. The radio also has a variety of programmable options, including the ability to set up priority channels, adjust the squelch, and customize the display.
Another notable feature of the VX-6R is its advanced memory system. This allows you to store up to 900 different frequencies in multiple banks, making it easy to organize and access your most frequently used channels. Additionally, the radio has a built-in automatic repeater system, which simplifies the process of communicating through a repeater.
Overall, the Yaesu VX-6R is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a reliable and versatile handheld transceiver. Its robust construction, tri-band capabilities, and pre-programmed frequencies make it an ideal choice for both pre-disaster and post-disaster scenarios. Its user-friendly interface and advanced memory system make it easy to use, and its advanced features, such as the automatic repeater system, make it a powerful tool for communicating with others.
That is one of my favorite radios. I have a lot of HT's, but the VX-6 is my overall favorite. I also have the FT-70D the FT-5D and an Anytone 878 for DMR. But in a SHTF SITUATION First and always, I will take the VX-6. KN6PWH... 73
I'm liking it better than my FT-5DR. I feel that the FT-5DR's screen can break anytime and not too sure in keeping it outside when it rains.
We literally have the same HT's
Where are you in the country KN6PWH? Tom KC3QAC
Hands down, my fav radio. I bought mine based on your previous videos. I purchased the swivel clip, but over time I have come to appreciate the included clip. Thanks for your videos, Frank.
I think you are right. I wish they had something like the FT-5DR's clip. But, you can only hope.
Hi Frank, love this little radio. I bought one and still learning how to use it. I am looking forward to future videos on all the different functions. Thank you again Frank and thank you for sharing. KO4UWU
Thanks. I have a playlist already when I got my first one, but I do want to do a Beginner's Guide video for those who want to get this radio.
I’ve had my VX6R for over 5 years now and it’s my go to radio for all my hobbies. I use it more then my ft60 and Ft3D. The clip it comes with sucks. I highly recommend the Yaesu Clip 14. Although I do have the rubber duck I prefer the Super Elastic Signalstick Antenna with BNC. And the bnc adaptor for the radio. The research I’ve done tells me the bnc adaptor is waterproof. Although I’ll never intentionally put the radio in the water I’ve had it in rain and snow and even kayaked with it and absolutely no problems… 73’s
I'm not a fan of the Yaesu Clip 14, for it swivels to much. I like the FT-3D's clip, they should all be like that.
I agree the Ft3D is a solid clip. You’d think someone would come up with a aftermarket design for a clip for the VX6R. But I’m actually a fan of the clip 14 being a backpacker the clip 14 moves with me.
Great radio, I love mine. I do have the mod in case I ever need it in an emergency. I found the best results in wide receive with the Smiley extending metal antenna. However, the included rubber ducky was the close second place performer and makes lots of sense for durability.
Thanks for reminding me about wide receive. I forgot about that. I've been having some issues receiving some local FM stations indoors. I thought it would do better. The rubber ducky that came with the antenna is very useful, especially when it rains - keeps the radio nice and dry.
Yaesu makes pretty decent ducks.
Really looking forward to the Beginners Guide video.
Hi, there
I have a question. I don’t have much experience about radios, but I want to ask if you can use that type of radio as a walkie talkie with an equal radio. Thanks in advance
The way it is no. Some people modify the radio, but I wouldn't be able to tell you which frequencies.
Great radio
Thanks.
Where did you buy yours ? I was in the USA two weeks ago - I went to the Orlando/Florida Hamcation. I desperately wanted to buy this VX6R, but all the HRO and DXEngineering stores were sold out. I like the wide RX coverage and durability
Yup. I was looking for one as well two weeks ago. Then last week they appeared at HRO. I got mine from Anaheim.
Stinks that it only gives you 1.5 watts on 222mhz. Often to make any repeater you need more power on 222 than you do on 2m or 440. Because the repeaters are usually far away. Seems like anyway.
When will you have the beginners video. Beginner here, just received today. Waiting for it to charge😅
what is the ADAPTOR ? what is that thing ? please enlighten !
I wish they would add the fusion hardware to the VX-6 and leave the rest alone. After the MOD I get FRS, GMRS, MURS, 6M with different antenna, I still get errors on the CB bands. I am not sure if you can do anything with HF. But you can enter 003525 to give you 3.525. You can enter 028300 to give you 28.300.
Agreed. However, I would modify it to include a higher capacity battery.
Why do all the VX-6R radios have “VX-6” marked on the front? What’s the “R” mean?
My best guess would be that the R stands for receiver.
I would never buy radio without high waterproof rating, usb charging for backup in field solar battery pack charging. Battery pack that accepts AA or AAA is nice to have.
Great radio. Forget trying to get your family into it. Just issue them gmrs.
I have 3
Wow. They are sure cool radios.
What this IT Antena?
It's a diamond antenna that does three bands.
Civil Air Band Rx capable?
