You can't claim "defence" when you're the one invading and occupying the land and have been doing so for 75 years in addition to placing 2.2 million Gazans in an open air prison for 17 years where you control everything that goes in and out including water and electricity. Israel is an expansive state it's been growing on Palestinian lands since 1947, look at the maps from 1947 to 1967 to 1973 to 2000 and 2023. That's not defending yourself, you can't defend yourself by expanding your territory.
That's you saying "of course Israel has the right to continue occupying and terrorising and imprisoning the indigenous people (Palestinians) of the land and expanding it's territory".
Stop using the word "defend" unless you'd use the same for Russian troops in Ukraine.

The thing is both Israel and Ukraine are under Western protection, it doesnt matter if theyre defending or not they were able to twist the words around if something goes wrong and blame the nearest enemy. Just cut US aid and all of them would go into the black market, Ukraine slowly noticing that those weapons would possibly go elsewhere with these considered biggest protection money and Ukranian economy would collapse even more while Russia is literally still having positive benefits from the sanctions. At what point are political parties going to be honest about the way israel is behaving?
There is a very clear line in law and israel is blurring this line as they did in 2003 when the Int'l Court of Justice (ICJ) rulled against israels claim of "self-defence" for building a wall in Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT). There are many law principles in Int'l Humanitarian Law (IHL) and in Int'l Human Rights Law (IHRL), the UN Charter also denotes what "self-defence" is in Article 51 of the UN Charter.
I suppose Politicians and public dont read too deeply into these things to understand that israels current behaviour is UNLAWFUL.
The applicable legal regimes before and during armed conflicts are different. Jus ad bellum consists of principles applicable when states “may engage” in an armed conflict or resort to the use of armed force. On the other hand, jus in bello refers to the situation where the applicable law "regulates the conduct" of parties ‘engaging’ in an armed conflict (also known as IHL). Self-defence falls under the jus ad bellum regime. IHL governs rules pertaining to jus in bello. The two regimes should not be merged and israel merges these two principles.
This means that the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and customary international humanitarian law still hold their value when a state acts in self-defense in an armed conflict. In conclusion, an act of self-defence (jus ad bellum) must be consistent with applicable legal instruments. It must not be used to justify IHL violations (jus in bello) owing to the divide between the two regimes.
It is undisputed that self-defence is an exception to the prohibition of the use of force in jus ad bellum. However, when exercising this inherent right, states must pass the 'Caroline test', a customary law principle that lays conditions of _'necessity of self-defence, instant, overwhelming, leaving no choice of means and no movement for deliberation '_ Self-defence must be _'that military action necessary and appropriate to REPEL an attack'_ a state exercising this right must comply with the principles of necessity and proportionality. This requirement is also held by the ICJ in Nicaragua and Nuclear Weapons and it has now been accepted as customary law. Additionally, states exercising the right of self-defense must consider the derogation measures and non-derogable rights mentioned in the applicable human rights treaties. They must ensure that actions taken in self-defense _“must be the least intrusive instrument amongst those which might achieve the desired result.”_ Thus, self-defense cannot justify IHRL violations since it cannot preclude the wrongfulness of conduct.
Like i said Israel blurrs the lines which is not permissible and political parties should know this, the UN knows this and recently called Israel out yet again as they have for decades, but Israel remains protected by vetos held by the UK & USA.
So when Sunak and others say they stand by Israels right to self-defence, what they truely mean is that they are turning a blind eye to IHL, IHRL, UN Charter A51, The ICJ, and the 4th Geneva Convention 1949 on 'the protection of civillians'.
These are well known principles of modern international law and rules of conflict.
There are five _ad bellum_ criteria for a war to be considered just:
▪︎ having just cause,
▪︎ being the only means of last resort,
▪︎ right authority (international law supports the action),
▪︎ having proportionality _( _*_that the war/action does not cause more harm or suffering than the good achieved by a victory_*_ )_
▪︎ reasonable prospect of success.
The UK Government is deliberately being ignorant of these laws, and rules, by sompky repeating the _"right to self-defence"_ because nobody in their right mind would deny that right, however it comes with special rules and those rules are not being observed.
In short, the self-defence line taken by isrsel and parroted by the eestern leaders is a rouse.
