  • NomadBSD is an excellent FreeBSD based mobile OS designed to be used on a USB stick, enabling a transportable BSD experience with the option to install to HDD.
With automatic video driver installation, Linux Browser installer capability and a fast, lean desktop - NomadBSD is an excellent choice for someone who wants FreeBSD on the go!

Thanks for the video! 🙂 I like FreeBSD anyway - nice to have a graphical installable one 🙂 But many people look on the time an installation need and how many steps have to be done... In my opinion: no problem if it takes a bit of time. If you have a PC or laptop at home, you won't install daily, so a bit more time does not make a negative argument. All the best!! I hope you will produce more nice videos here!! Cheers, Norbert

Good point! And because this is a live OS, they can still keep their existing one :-)

I like FreeBSD too. Currently I am waiting for RPi 5 to buy and then install Nomad. I assumed it has Java 21.

This video motivated me to try Nomad for a 15 year old netbook that I enjoy keeping relevant. After installing I took note of which software was used to support the system and will probably do a full FreeBSD install to the onboard storage.
It would be a serious long term contender if it lived in RAM and only wrote to the USB on shutdown. 32 bit is getting harder to support so it is nice to discover a new option. Especially for the HP Mini-1000 series, their size and keyboard are the most comfortable sub-notebooks out there!

Indeed @RoboNuggie; I agree with @jakec9441's statement, "It would be a serious long term contender if it lived in RAM and only wrote to the USB on shutdown."; is it possible to do that?

Last time I've tried NomadBSD it stopped booting after just a simple pkg upgrade command. Because it's hardwired in many ways inside and is not well documented, I was unable to figure out what's going on and just gave up.

if only there was a PPC port.... would love a stable and GUI BSD to breath life into my old and loved PPC kit

Yes, Morph OS is utterly brilliant and I'm a strong advocate for it. However £70 for an OS that is essentially for a hobbiest market is a bit steep per machine...

You can install FreeBSD to PPC.... of course it doesn't come with a GUI but that's not hard to install.

I’ve been keeping an eye on this for a few years too and really appreciate what it brings to us!
I haven’t tried it for many months and r here to see how the new XFCE desktop looked. It looks like the OpenBox of old! Or haven’t they changed over yet?

    Hello folks.
That's strange because I tried fisrt on an old Lenovo X220 (2011) and i worked perfectly. From the img i create another usb stick to boot my Lenovo X280 (2019) and… It don't boot/ The only change from the video is that I choose the zfs one. I will keep you in touch if you which.
I will try again because normadBSD is really attractive, beautiful dans easy to use.
Thanks for the video and al your advises.

Nice presentation Christopher! I'm looking for a minimalistic FreeBSD-based OS that I can install Fluxbox or openbox and build my system up from there. Any suggestion(s)? TIA ..

Sorry for the late reply, your post was held in UA-cam purgitory....
The best FreeBSD OS would be FreeBSD :-)
Very easy and quick to install Openbox and get things up & going....

Does Nomad include and/or support Bhyve?

    • @RoboNuggie
      @RoboNuggie  5 місяців тому +1

Bhyve should be available as NomadBSD uses the FreeBSD pkg / ports tree...
