Thank you so much to everyone who is taking the time to watch this video and others I have been creating about this show!
I love how diving deeper into the context opens my eyes and can totally change the way I see scripture, deepening my relationship with Christ. I love that I am able to share this others, and humbled by your views and comments.
One quick disclaimer about this week’s reaction: I make a joke about the fact that Jesus calls his mother “woman.” Please know that this is a joke. There is no part of me that believes Jesus willfully disrespected his mother.
It does sound sassy, though 🙂

I am blessed in seeing Jesus in the more human aspect, not diminishing his divinity, relating with fun and humor, compassion, kindness and wisdom to each person in contact with him. This is something we've missed often as we read the narratives of the gospel. I am blessed, and am sharing that blessing to others, to watch thoughtfully The Chosen. Praying for its intended ministry of reaching more people and transforming and deepening lives of Jesus followers. 🙏👍👏

    Appreciate these...very thoughtful.
Quick note...the reason I had Jesus call Mary "Mother" instead of "Woman" is solely because "Woman" was actually a term of endearment back then, but I didn't think that would be understood by the majority of the audience.
    Thanks again!

Yes! You know, maybe the day after I watched the season 2 premier, I listened to a sermon on the Cana wedding by the Bible teacher, Malcolm Smith, and he elucidated also that the word ~woman~ was a Jewish term of endearment.

When I first moved to Texas in 1998, my Steve (RIP) Would call me, “woman”, he explained it WAS a term of endearment, over the years things changed, we would get angry looks, esp from the men, so he stopped calling me “woman” (made me proud when he did, because I was HIS woman 💙). Which I was ok with, because he started calling me, “my baybeeee” (sadly, I lost him at the young age of 42 to ALS)., so when y’all move to Texas, DO NOT call your wife, “woman”....lol

What struck me about this episode (& never before had I thought of the Wedding at Canaa this way) was how reluctant (possibly fearful?) Jesus was to publicly perform a miracle at this time. In 'The Chosen', Jesus looks absolutely crestfallen when His Mother Mary first raises the issue of her friends having run out of wine at their child's wedding. Jesus says "it is not yet my time", and the actor really nails the knowing look on Jesus's face: He *knows* that once He begins His public life of spreading the gospel, the clock begins ticking to its inevitable, horrific conclusion. The longer Jesus can wait to begin, the longer He gets to spend alive on this earth. So, in essence, the miracle of the wine at Canaa is the beginning of the end for Jesus's earthly life. He knows it, but His Mother Mary does not. Which is why she does not hesitate to ask Him to help. Mary doesn't realize what she is asking of Him. It's so huge. At the time, only Jesus knows it. (And we, the viewers, who know what happened soon after Jesus began publicly performing miracles and preaching the Good News; His days are now numbered). I thought Jonathan Roumie captured Jesus's conflicted feelings brilliantly. Yes, Jesus is God... but He's also human. Most humans would not be eager to hasten their own end, and Jesus appears to be no different in that regard.

Also, Mary told him that it wasn't his time when he was younger, so he's been conditioned that way. She was telling him that maybe it's time. He's thirty now, and she has seen him do miracles already I'm sure. they have kept it quiet until now. He was probably told it wasn't his time when his father died as well.

Calling Mary "Woman" is not sass, not is it a rebuke. Jesus called her woman both in Cana, before his first public miracle and at the foot of the cross. It is a reference to the woman of both Genesis 3:15 and Revelation 12:1. Her relationship with Him is so much more than physical motherhood...it is all over the Bible!!

There is another interessting thing in this episode, I think: In the beginning the boy Jesus says to his mother: "If not now, when?" and Mary responds later "Please!" and you can see her face directly. Later at the wedding, they have exactly the same conversation! But this time, Mary asks: If not now, when?" And then there is this "Please!" again, but her face is older, because it is so many years later. I love this connection between this two scenes.

I really appreciate the deep dive that both YOU and the series bring into the lives of so many people. I am caught up to Season 2 episode 3. I am starting to see that i may have missed some things back in the earlier episodes, but the LESSONS of the stories told are, for me SO much more powerful than the history. In episode 3, it's ingenious how they took a very realistic situation of a "Matthew" wondering "Where do I start?" and weaving an entire narrative (show) around that one scripture he is given! It brought tears to my eyes when the apostle with the malady did not know why he wouldn't ask Jesus to heal him...when there was a line of people sometimes fighting to be first to receive the same.
My heart is SO full of the lessons of the type of person I need to become and how I can be a better man for others. It's very easy to see how you can get 7 seasons out of the story. Probably more if they wanted, I suspect.
Thank you so very much for bringing the spirit of Christ into the lives of the people by coloring the reality of Him who is mighty to save.

I always understood this as Jesus' Rite of Passage. His Bar Mitzvah was probably very recent. He would be considered an adult. So His humanity interpreted that it was time to teach to begin His ministry, to show others what He knew, what He could do, what He could teach them that they could do and be. It was a moment of expanding His senses and understanding, that what He did could affect his parents and those around them. He learned as a human learns, bit by bit, experience by experience, insight by insight. Baby to Toddler to Child to Teen to Young Adult to Mature Adult. He came to be one of us. If He had come fully able to know and teach, he would have arisen out of the ground as an adult.

Bar Mitzvah is done a out age 12. That is why, when Jesus went with his parents, and they lost Him, it was much easier, as he could have been with adults being Bar Mitzvah or with the group younger. As extended family was always around.

Hi Brandon, I’m going to be sharing The Chosen along with each of your corresponding videos, with to family, starting tomorrow! I have a few that have been hesitate, or even oppositional, to even being open to watching it. Tomorrow, we have a family day planned, and I’ve asked if we could give this a try again. (Since several have talked around it, around Jesus, the Bible and we never end up watching or reading anything from the Bible to then discuss). Please pray for us. I’ve been trying to share and talk, little by little with several of my loved ones for several years, and no matter if they watch it or not, I trust Jesus is knocking at the door of their hearts, and of course however God can reach them, I just appreciate extra prayers for them to see Jesus is the way, truth and life and come to accept Jesus gift of redemption. Thank you so much for your ministry here.

Hi Brandon, I often think that when Mary asked Jesus to help at the wedding that he was hesitant to do so by saying “ it’s not my time “ . She pleaded with him and he did help. I always feel that this was the beginning of the end and it makes me wish that she hadn’t pleaded with him. Just my thoughts.I love your videos and have learned so much from them all Thank you so much and God bless you 🙏

May GOD continue to bless you for your exceptional effort and sincerest care in teaching, clarifying, highlighting and amplifying the sometimes overlooked truths and at times, obtuse portions of this magnificent cinema-graphic miracle.
You seem to be “spot on” in your insights. I say this as a Believer of 73 years in our LORD and SAVIOR. You are “getting the picture!” and I, for one, truly appreciate your teachings and insights. Keep up the good work. We who are in the Body of CHRIST need more good expository teachers like you. You are being a good and faithful Servant. Thank you Brother Brandon!

I love the idea of discussing scripture at a wedding. I love the WORD that says wherever 2 or more of you are gathered in my name their am I. Like even though He's always with us somehow HE'S more present when we talk about HIM! How AWESOME is that? We should talk about scripture every chance we get! You never know who might overhear and become interested!

My son used to hide in those round clothes racks at Sears, would be quiet, and I would be terrified that he was abducted. In the wedding scene, we get to know Jesus on a personal level and it makes him more approachable and human. The series is amazing. I have learned so much more about Jesus and feel closer to him because of The Chosen.

My view from first scene (losing Jesus in the temple) to the wedding Miracle. Mary knows everything about Jesus even about Jesus crucifixion. So when Mary came to know that at the age of 13 Jesus started his ministry, she was worried like any other loving and caring mother. Jesus is too young to die and she dont want to lose her son so soon. "51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man." .
Till the Cana wedding Jesus was not doing his ministry publicly. Even Jesus was waiting for his mothers approval/permission, because he had promised Mary at Jerusalem when he was 13. During the wedding when Mary requested Jesus to perform the miracle, She knew after this miracle Jesus ministry will began and this is going to end in Mount Calvary. He is going to be crucified for the sins of the world. She cant hold him any more from his ministry. "4 Jesus said to her, Woman, what have I to do with you? My hour is not yet come. 5 And his mother said to the servants, Whatever he says to you, do it.". Jesus is teasing her with that comment, "my hour is not yet come". Jesus is making sure, whether is mother is ready to lose/sacrifice his son. Same we have seen in Old testament, Abram & Isaac.
Just to conclude; Mary put a pause to Jesus ministry at Jerusalem and resumed same at Cana.

I claim the above verses upon you brother. Amen! Brendon brother you have opened my eyes, your words have stirred up a whirlwind within me, so true how we have compartmentalized our faith, and we take learning the Word of God as a chore, a to do thing on our check list.

Yes. For me the question was the hook. It was the part from Jesus' past that would bring Him to His destiny. The brilliant writing was used when we saw the story line jump back to Moses and the making of the bronze serpent. He knew where the cost of our salvation would lead Him.

Something else is would add is the connection between what Jesus said to Mary in Jerusalem when He was 12, and their exchange when she asks Him to help with the wine situation at the wedding. They are very similar exchanges. In Jerusalem, Jesus helps Mary realism that the time has come for Him to start studying. At the Wedding, Mary helps Jesus realize that the time for Him to be public with His ministry has come.

I appreciate Brandon's efforts to put himself there at the time. There are some good psychological insights here. Yes, many of us have a Hollywoodized concept of who Jesus was, "hair perfect" etc. But how many of us appreciate that he was devoted and committed to doing the will of God at all times. (By the way, that primarily means sharing the inner life with God, who indwells our minds with a pre-personal spirit fragment.) But he didn't really have any awareness of his prior existence until being told by an angel to be about his father's business. And not until his baptism did he become fully conscious of it.
