  • I caught a flash flood on film as it occurred. Was pretty amazing to see in person. The sheer brutality, the noise, even the smell. Made my day being there to experience it. The camera doesn't do it justice, but it still made a decent video IMO. This is where it passed under Sheep ridge road in Virgin, UT. Here is the exact position on google maps: maps.google.co...

Hello Jake, is it possible to contact you regarding this video (i.e. via email)? We would be interested to discuss a license to use this video if this is generally possible to discuss? :) Cheers, Felix

We almost died in a houseboat on lake Powell when a storm when the tail end of hurricane Andrew blew through. The canyon we were in turned into a river and out of nowhere our anchors on shore were washed out by a 30 foot wide and 200 foot tall waterfall that appeared out of nowhere by a flash flood. The storm came out of nowhere and it lasted about 30 minutes. 80mph wind, torrential rainfall
and nonstop thunder and lightning that was echoing off the canyon walls. It was the experience of a lifetime but it was also the most scared I’d ever been. After that experience we look at the areas we’re going to camp at a little differently every houseboat trip since then.

It always got me how a flash flood in the desert can pick up so much wood, when I was camping out there it was almost impossible to find firewood for my camp fire. LOL

Hehe, I'm using a GoPro on an extended hiking pole. So it gives me an extra 6 foot reach. If you watch my video "pine creek last rap, scary" you can see the entire apparatus I use. :)

If you are looking for more data, there is another video of this event further upriver at DNgpI03nWFM I can't put the link up but just replace those numbers and it should work. It's named "Flash Flood Beginning Near Virgin Utah & Zion National Park " by a user named "canyonlandmedia". Really neat video as he is 10 feet away from it instead of up on a safe cliff like I was. I would guess this would be a half hour before it hit my location.

The time stamp on the recording says it started 6:53PM on 8/19/2012 and stopped at 7:01. I don't think I sped up or cropped the video in any way. I'm going to try and edit the video and link the exact spot on google maps for those who want an exact location. It's not letting me link it in comments.

anazing tnx for upload. Makes you realize how nature transports things from one place to another, snakes, eggs, bugs, trees, pollen, seeds from plants etc.

@Jake Wow... how long were you stranded there? We had a huge flash flood were I used to live in Boscastle in Cornwall, a huge major incident so lucky no one was killed. Floods came crashing through the centre of our village in 2004 washing homes and cars into the sea, we had a dozen or more helicopters trying to rescue people, I now have anxiety every time we have heavy rains...

not stranded. We are up on the bridge next to the road. We ended up getting out about 30 mins before it hit. Still cutting it closer than I would have liked.

I work for the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City. I'm trying to gather flash flood reports to verify our warnings. Could you tell me what day and approximate time this was?
    Thanks!
