Your line about how the "mockery of Jews and there one God should be kept at a minimum" cracked me up. I remember that line from the newsreader in "Rome." 🤣
I think it was "...at an appropriate minimum* " its even funnier cause it implies there is an unknown appropriate amount that is more than the absolute 'minimum'
"Rome" did it right. They made fun of Jews, Germans, British, Belgians, Egyptians, Syrians, Scythians, Gauls, Celts, even Greek philosophers lol basically anyone who wasn't them
Is the second season that much worse? In the middle of the first now and absolutely loving it. Only gripe is I could use a bit less Pullo and a bit more history - Caesar left Egypt awfully fast and there's been no mention of Cleopatra since, even though she was in Rome for a time?
I think is acceptable for the character, as an old man, to mention "Seleucids", a lot of old people now are still sometimes saying "soviets" while meaning "russians".
I think it's mostly the opposite - with people calling the USSR "Russia" and using Russian in the same sense as Soviet. Which was actually considered controversial in the USSR itself and to this day history teachers in Russia usually correct their students when they use those terms interchangibly.
@@andreydoronin6995 Yeah, I can sort of understand that. It annoys me when much of the world say English when they mean British, or are under the impression they are the same thing.
@@andreydoronin6995 also the opposite happens, but, at least in my home country, a LOT of people talking about the current invasion of Ukraine say "the soviet invasion" and the correct themselves immediately after (I guess some link in their mind is poinying to the events of Prague or Budapest during their youth). So to me it doesn't appear so incredible to see an old person, who has seen a lot, to sometimes use the name of defunct political entities to refer to current entities in the same location.
I have recently rewatched HBO Rome. My first time was like 10 years ago. Despite some innacuracies I'm happy they added the Jewish plotline with Herod, it's a nice addition to the show. It demonstrated how vast, complex and culturaly diverse the roman empire was
another reason why the show shouldn't have been cancelled: they way they maintained the historical accuracy whilst providing a well written plot is simply astounding.
There was historical accuracy issues. It just looks great in comparison to some of the trans we are adjusted to. Also they were planning on time jump to Jesus’s time for the third season (like the video mentioned) which would have been a huge time jump. The second season already jumped too much but they would have needed to abandon any accuracy or change all actors and most of the characters too if they planned some grounding on reality. Personally if they had had three season I wish they had started with the civil war of Marius and Sulla for first season, and introduced Pompeius, Crassus and Caesar during it (and some others probably not room for all important people). And end with Spartacus. And actually have more of the politics in between than straight to next civil war.
I have always considered Josephus one of the most fascinating historians of Antiquity, considering his unrivaled writings on Jewish history. In fact, the role of Josephus during the Jewish Revolt was very well represented in the BBC docuseries "Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire".
The reason for Cicero's comments regarding the Jews sending gold to Jerusalem every year was most likely to pay their tithes in leu of the crops and animals required by the Mosaic law. This would have caused resentment in Rome and other cities as offerings paid to the local gods were used to build and improve local temples, which in turn would have been thought to enhance the city. Whereas they would have regarded the Jews sending large amounts of gold to a foreign city as financially weakening their own city.
They were mad because they felt that they drained their society while not adding anything. They weren't interested in assimilation or joining Roman society. They wanted all the benefits without any of the sacrifices. There exist quite a bit of literature about it. The crazy thing is that it's also in almost every other single society they are involved in.
More like Hieronymus Sadechus/Yeruchim (Jerochim) Sadech rather than Jerria Seinfeldicus. Jerry Seinfield was born Jerome, which is a Frenchization for the ancient East Hellenic name Hieronymus "Sacred Name" and, ultimately from the Aramean of Hebrew Jerum/Yerum, from Yeruqayim/Joachim "Raised by Yahveh" or Yerushem "City of Fame/Name/Renown" . Seinfeld was a Jewish surname native from Austrian Galicia, and means "sea field" in German. This means sense that it may deviates from the Hebrew word Sadech "field" or of Saddiq/Tsadiq "Righteous" .
The Jews who rule the world say that their being spread out among the n ations has become their strength. By this they could collude to bring down empires. This is how Islam rose. Jews had influence in the sassy Sassanid EMpire, the busy Byzantine Empire, and Arabia. They opened the gates. Islam's rise was no miracle. Mohammed was their pawn.
I think Timon and Levi's ark is supposed to show how fragmented and violent Jewish society had become at that point (foreshadowing the coming revolt) Also great video, thank you
The Roman general Tiberius Julius Alexander, Titus' deputy commander during the siege of Jerusalem was Jewish. He also, ironically oversaw the looting and destruction of the temple. He later became the Prefect of the Praetorian Guard. He was the highest ranking person of Jewish background in the Roman empire.
Ashkenazim are as white as HItler, so oviously they are not Sumerians. Jews are Sumerians. Abraham was Sumerian. They were neither black nor white. They certainly weren't blonds. Ridiculous how people everywhere are confused about everything in the modern world.
@Sanctus Paulus 1962 You cowardly ignored my argument, but I'll deal with yours anyway. Yes, you DO have to look Jewish to be Jewish, just as you have to look Japanese to be Japanese. Jews historically are more anti-foreigner than the Japanese. Abraham was Sumerian. They don't morph into a differnet race just because they move to a different land. Jeiwsh intermarriage with non-Jews was always rare especially then. You ignore that fact for your race-glory-stealing narrative. You don't even understand basic geography. The Roman Empire did not include lands of the Ashkenazim: GERMANIA , what is now Poland and east of there. So to conflate them with the Sephardim doesn't make sense. The Romans exiled them into differnt parts of the Roman Empire, not lands of the Ashkenazim. The Ashkenazim are from a Medieval state called Khazaria which converted to (Talmudic) Judaism for political advantage (to survive better next to anti-pagan Muslim pagans, and anti-pagan Cathoic pagans who tolerated Jews more). The early Russians kicked them out of there or made staying there unprofitable. No Romans exiled them. Seinfeld is said to involve Jewish actors, but they're Ashkenazim. The connection is obviuos. You jsut don't know enough or you pretend to know little. I'm working on a series proving that the original southern Europeans weren't blonds. But you believe Leonidas was a Viking in racial apperance, doncha? Oh. And tell me if Jews can be black, Native American or Japanese.
@Sanctus Paulus 1962 But, and please correct me if I am wrong, much of the diaspora was Jewish men going to distant lands. The women typically did not go. So the Jewish men went to various parts of Europe (and other places) and married local women. The DNA studies confirm that Ashkenazim do have Hebrew DNA however it is from the paternal line. Uncomfortably, this would make Ashkenazim non-Jewish by Jewish law as that must come from the mother. Herod was never accepted by the Jews because, although his father was Jewish, his mother was not. But again, please correct if I've erred.
@@bill9989ah you don’t understand. If you bring an outsider into your tribe by marriage, and then you both have a baby, that baby is a child of the tribe. Prior to HBO Rome…. The writer of Deadwood (David Milch) had proposed a story about “Roman street cops”. He said the first scene was going to be them arresting St. Paul. He may have even wrote the pilot.. But he was amazed to hear there was another Rome show in the works.. He discusses this in the Deadwood DVD commentary.
My understanding was that this show was supposed to run for about 4 or 5 seasons, and that the show runners were only told halfway through season 2 that the show wasn't getting renewed for a third season. That's why you can see some set up with Herod in the second season, they were going to introduce the idea of a Messiah appearing in the fourth season. This is also why you can tell that the final season was rushed.
Another thing to remember as to why the Jews of both Rome and Judea despised Herod (for his early reign at least) was because while in faith he was a Jew, he was ethnically Arabic, and therefore both the common people and the great families of Jerusalem weren’t too happy when this outsider was declared King of the Jews by yet another external authority. Some historians attribute Herod’s vast building projects such as the Temple Mount to basically massive bribes to try and keep the Jewish people onside
@@Danielst15lm oh I know, mate, I’m simplifying as the edomites (his dads side of the family), idumeans (Edomites settling in Idumea, to which ethnic group Herod belonged to) and Nabateans (a group to which one of Herod’s wives was along with some of his sons) all these peoples can eventually became classed as Arabs (at least to most westerners, it’s still a hot topic of contention depending on a multitude of factors for some people especially in the Middle East) I’ve only used the word Arabic as this is Romaboo Ramblings not Judeaboo Jibings, so people won’t know wtf an Edomite is

They need to make a new big budget series based on "The First man in Rome" books. It would be great to see other famous Romans like Marius and Sulla accurately portrayed.
This. So this. Those books are so amazing, that time period is so amazing. Its just a few years before Caesar, and Caesar has gotten like 10000 movies and TV shows, but Marius and SUlla got none. They deserve the full treatment.
Absolutely - this series of historical novels gives so much context to life in Rome, the workings of government, military and society at large; plus the family that produced Julius Caesar. One of my favorite series of books, hands down. It could provide enough material for a decade-long series, with all the characters, plots, side plots and time frame.
Cicero’s comment about Jews sending money to Judea intrigues me. In the modern day, immigrant communities sending money to their homeland is a point of some contention; while Rome didn’t have the same circumstances, since Judea was part of the greater Roman Empire, Cicero doesn’t seem to be passing any moral judgement on the practise. Do we know if that (lack of) opinion was widespread? The expulsion also seems to have been for violating the Pax Deuorum, at least on paper. Was that the Roman’s primary concern with Jewish communities, if they had any at all?
@Zoomer Stasi They weren’t that at this point in the late republic though. Later, sure, but that’s not the timeframe focused on in the video. As stated, independence wasn’t a real goal for any of Judea’s internal factions at this point.
Can't comment on that particular issue regatding Cicero, but his opinion of Jews was quite low. Varro, on the other hand, was more positive: he thought that lack of images in the Jewish faith was similar to how the Roman religion used to be, so it was more "mos maiorum" than having the statues of gods. There isn't much written about the expulsion of 137 apart from what I presented. Even this was hard to find, because most online texts of Valetius Maximus have this section removed. One English translation says "those people" instead of "Jews" at which I chuckled heartily.
@Zoomer Stasi Honestly Roman banking would make for an interesting video in itself! In Medieval times the laws in Europe against usury meant very few Christians were willing to lend a ruler money since they couldn’t charge interest - Jews had no such restriction, since the Pope’s edicts didn’t apply to them, and so richer Jewish merchants and similar would often be the ones who leant money. It wasn’t until the holy orders had the idea of holding people’s money for ‘safety’ while they travelled the holy land (and taking a donation and/or payment for these services which *totally* wasn’t interest, they promise) and expanded it to elsewhere that you see something resembling modern banking form. I wonder if there were similar religious laws that Jews were uniquely positioned to avoid in the Roman Republic that made them a natural fit for the role of being money lenders? How did Roman banks even work, if there were such things?
I read that the writers intended for the show to tell the story of Rome from Caesar to Jesus. It would have been so interesting to see that story told as a political development in the context of a client state turn province in rebellion. These Jewish characters are probably what remained of that series that could have been. Shame. As good as Rome was, imagine what it could have been with game of thrones money.
Even if the series could continue (it was a financial issue), correctly portraying how the Romans adopted and spread it would have exposed christianity for what it is and upset a lot of people.
Herod switched his allegiance to Augustus near the end of the civil war between Antony on Octavian. Herod hated Cleopatra, and until he rebelled, Marc Antony had placed all of Herod's territories under her control from Alexandria. She, likewise despised and had no respect for him. History would have been vastly different had Antony won that conflict. Cleo and Antony were already awarding their children territory when they were very, very young, which included all of the Levant. So, for his loyalty and help with taking down Antony in Alexandria, Herod was given all the territory of Galilee and Judea to rule as a client kingdom, which, as you said, only changed for Judea after Herod's son mismanaged the area and it become a Roman province.
Greetings from Britannia... this is simply brilliant! It’s always amazing to me just how fascinating Roman politics were/are... these personalities live on for us millennia after there passing. Makes you wonder how much of our present day shenanigans will be remembered eh!?
The Hasmoneans, even the most pious of them were pretty much Hellenized, as you could tell by their names alone. Not to mention that their interactions with Rome initially were in Greek. Sparking a curious case where a Jewish delegate walked into the senate and requested to ally with Rome in Greek right after the language had been banned from being used in the Senate. Fortunately for him, the Romans had no love for the Seleucids and agreed to the proposal even in the face of his transgression.
It was such a great series, and videos like this help me appreciate even more how much the creators put into recreating the spirit of the time, even if they sacrificed details of historical accuracy.
The enormous hatred of the Jewish people for Roman sovereignty was brilliantly represented in the Anthony Burgess's novel "The Kingdom of the Wicked". One of the protagonists, Caleb, is a young zealot who is condemned to the cross for an absurd crime a few days after the death of Jesus. Freed during the procession by his compatriots, Caleb goes about organizing small revolts against the Romans for all Judea until he knows that his two sisters have been sold to Rome as slaves. Determined to rescue them, Caleb travels to the eternal city as a gladiator, only to discover upon his arrival that one of them was whipped to death by Caligula and the other married the centurion who bought her freedom. Knowing that he cannot return to his land, Caleb decides to stay in Rome, and although he swears he would never forget his hatred for the roman civilization, he ends up getting used to the their lifestyle and even starts a family. Unfortunately, this pacific era of well-being suddenly ends when Caleb loses his infant son during the Great Fire caused by Nero, thus reviving his inordinate hatred for Rome. Caleb then abandons his family and returns to Judea when the great Jewish revolt breaks out, joining the rebellious Zealots at the fortress of Masada. Finally, when the imprisoned Jews begin committing mass suicide to avoid being slaved, Caleb (now an insufferably decrepit old man) tells his compatriots to die while killing as many Romans as possible instead of simply taking their own lives. Completely fed up with him, one of the Jews slits the old man's throat. Watching his life fade away before his eyes, Caleb then realizes how much he wasted his life and that he will spend all eternity in hell for being dominated by his hatred.
Timon: "What you're doing is crazy, brother!" Levi: "Oh, really? What do you think it could happen? The Romans burning our Temple? IT WOULD BE MORE STUPID THAN THE MESSIAH WORKING AS A CARPENTER"
Such a well done series. Probably the best. Only wish they could have afforded another 2-3 seasons. I read that was the original plan, but in the end it was a very expensive production that probably couldn't even be taken on today given budgetary realities and all.
Self rule wasn’t really feasible, but it was very popular with the population of Israel about that time from what I’ve read. Levi was one of the main leaders of the movement
5:34 Not gonna lie. Although the writers of the show obviously tried to depict Herod as a badass and menacing villain to fear, all I could think while watching him was: "So this guy died horribly because he literally made Baby Jesus cry..."
@Zoomer Stasi How can you be descended from a metaphor? Also the fight of David against Goliath was part of a Jewish war against the Philistines. So it can't be a metaphor for that war. Because that war is literally the reason they are fighting. I think you have become used to calling everything and anything a metaphor.
@Zoomer Stasi Not a metaphor. Adam was a real man. YOu need a real man to be the ancestor of all men. Stop being liberal. I could say your wors are metaphors for the emptiness of liberalism.
It was supposed to be a bigger storyline but when HBO told Bruno Heller that they were cutting the show short, he decided to wrap it up quickly, thankfully.
Bruh if the series continued and Timon met Jesus (in his infancy) ,he would be like the old man Simon of the New Testament who was described as an old man who can't die yet until he saw the son of god.
Jewish Mother cries out in the Ampitheater: "is there a Doctor in the house?" A voice answers " Yes " the mother replies "are you single? If so I have I got a beautiful a girl for you!"
It's becuase they were building up for potentially 5 seasons, culminating around Christ. Because the show was so expensive and its R18 rating made it difficult to sell globally, they cancelled it. Very sad. As season 2 was supposed to be 2 different seasons, first half the war of the "liberators". Season 3, conflict between Antony and Octavian. BTW John Milius writing and producing is legendary.

I've always found the Pharisees kinda interesting since most people only know about them from the bible and have an extremely negative view of them. In reality they were roman collaborators who are most known for their depiction in a document written by people who opposed Roman rule and wanted independence. I think the funny thing is that they were kinda vindicated since after the jews revolted Rome took a harder stance on them. For those who don't know, in 70 AD the Jews finally revolted against Rome and lost, resulting in the sacking of Jerusalem, the loss of the ark of the covenant and the second temple, the kingdom of Judea was no longer recognized and was instead incorporated into the provenience of Syria, Roman rules became stricter and harsher on the Jews, and were it not for skill full diplomacy and pleading by several personalities would of resulted in their religion being banned. In fact, in terms of long term consequences, if it wasn't for this revolt the Israeli/Palestine conflict might not even exist. Btw, really liked your rendition of the famous line.
As a matter of fact, by the time that the Romans sacked Jerusalem in 70 CE, the Ark of Covenant was already reported missing for a few couple centuries. The last historical document to ever state about the whereabouts of the ark in Antiquity was some Judeo-Persian account which dates back from circa 490 BCE and narrates how after that the Persian satrapy of Egypt expediated a corps of their army to pillage every single temple in the land save the Jewish temple at Elephantine (nearby present-day Aswan) , the native Egyptians - whose cultural zeitgest was (and still is) notoriously nationalistic, agressively xenophobic and particularly anti-Asiatic due to the mental scars left by the part Canaanite-Syrian/Indo-Aryan Hyksos dynasts of the XIVth and XVth Dynasty at Avaris (who happened to be some of the primary ancestral forebears of the primary reigning Israelite and Samaritan tribes, their kingships and priesthood) and their 130-years long tyranny in Lower-Egypt, back to the Second Intermediary Period from a millenia earlier - went into an uproar, accusing the local Hebraic diaspora of collaborating and conspiring alongside the Persian overrulers (which was partly true, least for the collaborating part. The Judeo-Egyptian diaspora and its leaders were well-acquaintanced to the Satrapy, thanks to the ethablishment of the Satrapy of Judea by the Achemenids, and there has some very strong indications that a local Judean prophet, Davidic Prince, heir apparent of Judea and priestly leader settled at Elephantine in early 5th century BCE was equally, like any of his siblings at Judea, an *Achemenid Persian prince* born from King Darius I of the Persians and his Queen Atossa/Esther, a Judeo-Chaldean born Davidic princess turned-and-adopted-maritally-as-Persian-Queen) . It was mentioned in the documents that the coffin dwelt at the Judeo-Egyptian temple: but after that the angry indigenous rioters leveled up the building, the ark simply vanished. It is speculated that a procession the Hebrews discreetly fled away of Egypt with the coffin, but the modern day Judeo-Alexandrite rabbinical traditions has no idea where, while some obscure traditions of both the Ethiopian Coptic Orthodox Church and Judeo-Pagan Falasha traditions, in the meanwhile, claims that the Falashas are the direct descendants of these said runaways, whom took refuge first in Kush (wherein the relationships between the Jews and the Nubians were always ever-changing) then later on at the sources of the Atbara river or Lake Tana, at the heart of the D'mt Kingdom domineered Abyssinian Highlands, and settled down there prior that the later ancestral component of the Judeo-Abyssinians migrated down the kingdoms of Arabia Felix (mostly Mizrahi Jews and Semi-Judaicized Yemenis, but also Judeans, Syrian Jews, and Babylonian Jews) to the rotatively Aksum Kingdom domineered, Sabean Kingdom domineered or Hymiarite Kingdom domineered Tigray Valley (then later on the Lake Tana too) circa a period between the IInd century BCE to Ist century CE. The Falashas claims to watch over and protect the coffin from the Gentiles and the ill-intentioned eyes from the outside world since nearly 2,500 years, and that even if the ark is rumored from having been passed over to the local Christians one thousand years earlier-- jealously guarded over by a corps of ecclesiastic hermits from the Ethiopian Coptic Church someplace in modern-day Ethiopia since the Zagwe Dynasty, it is still customarily watched over by mystics of Falasha pedigree. It is howver impossible to confirm whether their claims are true or not-- and they better prefer it this way. *With reason* , if the so-callingly supranatural properties and dangerosity of the Ark were not so far from the stuff of fiction...
The Israeli/Palestine issue is only an issue because the Jews resettled in the region. The Romans executed ALL OF THEM in the final Tenple Revolt. Every man, woman and child was mercilessly slaughtered. None escaped. None survived. The region was then given back to the Cannanites. Interestingly it was the Canaanites who responded to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and converted to Christianity, making the region a Christian majority until the time of the Muslim conquest, and then up to 1910 and tragically the Muslims succeeded in the 1930's and 1940's to now to get a majority of Christians to convert to Islam. All my sources are correct.
@Ptolémée Sélénion 1. The Ark was a box for the Stone Commandments, the rod of Aaron and the pot of manna. It was NOT a coffin. 2. The Ark (according to biblical reference) was taken up into heaven at some point. God seemed to have His own reason for this. It might have been the abolishment of Temple worship which occurred officially when the final Sanhedrian agreed to leave the site of the Temple alone and just let the congregations worship in their native cities and towns (at the Synagouges) I can also tell you with 100% certainty that the Etheopians have a COPY of the Ark, not the Ark itself. It's empty.
@@christianfreedom-seeker2025 I guess I should clarify that my point isn't nothing else could of caused the conflict or the revolt directly lead to the conflict. great video ! as a jew, i think that the group that the brother were belong to was the Pharisees, due to the Sicarii being a group the splinted from the Pharisees in israel/judea solely, and the merchant communities (like the one in rome) were only Pharisees. Like you said ,the time gap between the thoughts of political independence in those circles is around a century (40 bce instead of the late 50's of ce ). More over ,Herod had support of some of the Pharisees in his early years(with the exception of murdering half of the Sanhedrin members) ,as he tried to gain legitimacy by marrying a Hasmonean princess named Mariamne and renovate the temple (until he became insane and went a full on Caligula ).

Zealots broke off from the Sadducees, not the Pharisees, but agreed with Pharisaic notions. Josephus, BTW, came from a Sadducee family with Hasmonean connections but also grew to accept most of the Pharisaic notions although he didn't consider them sufficient, so he was probably a Zealot himself originally. This may explain his vehemence against the Zealots in his writing; he's overcompensating for a dark past. The confusion about the origin of Zealots came from the lack of information on Judas of Gamala, their original founder, but during the First Jewish War itself it became clear that most of the Zealot leaders were former Sadducees. The Sicarii in particular were part of the splinter group of ex-Sadducee Zealots that were fighting over the Temple Mound against the Sadducees proper during the siege of Jerusalem. The idea that Sadducees were the pro-Roman collaborator faction is rabbinic propaganda. Both factions were equally anti-Roman, but the Sadducees were just better political operators who understood realpolitik. If you ask Israeli secular historians their consensus opinion is that the Sadducees were the ultraconservative nationalists who rejected Hellenization of their religion while the Pharisees were the liberal accommodationists who were Hellenizing their religion. The confusion comes from the two factions' civil attitude. The Sadducees rejected all foreign philosophical and political ideas not found in their Bible - they were the original Sola Scriptura adherents - but accepted Greek lifestyles. The Pharisees were instead busy borrowing ideas from Persian and Greek influences (angels, the afterlife, the immortal soul/pneuma, the infallibility of God as master of space and time, etc) and adding books to the Bible but completely rejected the lifestyle of the Greeks. So externally it looked like the Pharisees were the patriots, but we need only to look at America's pro-Russian "patriots" riding their Stars-and-Stripes-bedecked SUVs while spreading Putin's propaganda to see why people shouldn't be judged from external looks alone. The Sadducees had fought politically and diplomatically to rid Jerusalem of foreign rule and had largely succeeded in obtaining autonomy for the core of Judaea from the Romans. They had to accede to Roman protectorate status and allow some oversight. However, if we look at both Josephus and what the gospels say about the way the Romans kept control of Jerusalem, basically the Roman governors were living off on the coast in Caesarea Philippi and only coming into Jerusalem for about a month every year to watch the festivals. 11/12 of the time, Jerusalem was a self-governing autonomous republic ruled by the Sanhedrin. This shows that the Sadducees were nationalists at heart but pragmatic, which is why they were successful. They were willing to make concessions to remain semi-independent. They were of course also corrupt as heck and didn't care much about the common folk, but politically they had managed to maintain Judaean autonomy under Roman rule and that's really all they cared about. In this context it's easy to understand what the Zealots were originally: Sadducees who were just as nationalistic as the rest but refused any form of accommodation whatsoever. They also cared more about the common folk than their elitist brethren, thus the agreement with the Pharisees.
The word "Sadducees" is a Greek term. It has Jewish origins, coming from the word Tzadok, the name of a famous priest (Transliterated as Zadok in English) to whom Abraham brought offerings in the Torah.

Such a shame that this series wasn't given the multi-season length it deserved! The first series was absolutely magnificent.
This series walked so that Game of Thrones could run and face plant at the finish line.
Is the second season that much worse? In the middle of the first now and absolutely loving it. Only gripe is I could use a bit less Pullo and a bit more history - Caesar left Egypt awfully fast and there's been no mention of Cleopatra since, even though she was in Rome for a time?

I think it's mostly the opposite - with people calling the USSR "Russia" and using Russian in the same sense as Soviet.

Because it did financially weaken their city.

Timon was one of my favourite characters, the way he stood up to Atia was just epic

Absolutely - this series of historical novels gives so much context to life in Rome, the workings of government, military and society at large; plus the family that produced Julius Caesar. One of my favorite series of books, hands down. It could provide enough material for a decade-long series, with all the characters, plots, side plots and time frame.
I have hoped for this since reading Caesar’s Women as a 14 year old and becoming enthralled. I am not holding my breath, unfortunately.
@Zoomer Stasi Well, until Hadrian pacified it for good.
@@RomabooRamblings hey dude you have Nazis in the comments for this video
All the betrayal led to nothing, once Herod was dead, the territory he betrayed others to acquire were lost

My point is that the conflict exists because the Zionist movement was started due to the lack of an existence of a Jewish state. I'm not trying to claim it is as simple as "the revolt never happened so the ethnic feud never starts", what I am saying is this is another example of how the revolt ended up backfiring horribly to the point where it didn't just hurt Jews in their era, but Jews of future generations.

Lovely vid, thanks for making it
great video !
as a jew, i think that the group that the brother were belong to was the Pharisees, due to the Sicarii being a group the splinted from the Pharisees in israel/judea solely, and the merchant communities (like the one in rome) were only Pharisees.
See my video proving Zionism is heresy. I used to be a Zionist. There is a prophecy for how Israel will be destroyed by the entire world. Only after that does jesus return. The fake Jewsus, the anti-Christ will betray the Jews who trusted in him. The biggest traitors betrayed.
I worship a Jew. His race isn't the problem. Their racist Talmudic culture is.
You are right, at the time of the show Pharisees supported Hyrcannus, Antipater and Herod againat Saducees who sided with Aristobulus and Antigonus
Shalom, can I get a loan?

The word "Sadducees" is a Greek term. It has Jewish origins, coming from the word Tzadok, the name of a famous priest (Transliterated as Zadok in English) to whom Abraham brought offerings in the Torah.

Many Jews adopted Romanization in Tiberias, Caesarea, etc., survived the Destruction of the Second Temple on Tish B'Av 70 CE.
Any idea for Jews in Byzantine Empire?
Like we hear about Heraclian era seeing pogroms and persecution that resulted in many siding with Persians invaders.
But not sure about usury since Byzantine is commercial power and wonder about usury laws that would be filled by Jewish citizens like Western Europe.
There is a lot to cover, tbh. Mb I can focus on usury and banking in a later video
Fun fact: The laws against usury are originally from judaism, (in Deuteronomy), and are against lending to fellow Jews with interest.
Okay; that wasn’t my intention.
What I am trying to say is like “how is life of Jewish people in Byzantine compared to Western Europe, also do the Byzantine Roman have different views on usury and money due to them having advanced commerce and Eastern trade that usury wouldn't be stigmitized?”
