  • Grabe, preseason pa lang but we got a UP vs DLSU banger!
    So much physicality, emotions, taunting, and trashtalking for a preseason game. It makes want to watch more games between these two teams. But as usual, there is so much to unpack from this game so let's get to it.

    Torculas made 5 instant points off the bench (a three and an inside incursion) but got into early foul trouble then binangko na lang. Coach decided to not play him much for the rest of the game, but gave him 30 minutes in the Pinoy Liga game against Diliman College the day after where he made 15pts 15reb and had that alley oop with Remogat.
    He reminds me so much of that Rich Alvarez/Arwind Santos/Edwin Asoro type who gets his offense mostly on putbacks, transition dunks, and open threes against disrespectful opponents. But Torculas also gets a lot of secondary ball handling duties kahit hindi nag-ppress ang kalaban and has a few moves added like a eurostep, a push shot, and a turnaround at the mid-post. I think his wing skills are still being cultivated, mina-maximize lang yung rebounding motor niya and the speed mismatch at the 4.

    • @bolerosph
      @bolerosph  29 днів тому

      We're not reading much into his Pinoyliga performance. Most of the main rotation guys were not there haha
      Hopefully, he does continue to develop those perimeter skills because i think that's where he can elevate to higher tier pro leagues such as the KBL or B League. If he stays at PF, PBA or MPBL lang bagsak niya

  • @rcd2005
    @rcd2005 29 днів тому +4

    Belmonte played briefly as a small 5 and got that reverse coast to coast lay-up against Agunnane… and the technical foul for taunting 😅 he also got that turnaround jumper over Mike and the drive with the and-one against Poli. Confidence lang talaga (and some bulking up) kailangan but when he plays well, it always ends well for UP. I believe he’s in a Will Navarro situation, 4 pinalalaro but his wing skills are also being cultivated for an easy transition to the pros (and hopefully, the national team).

    Great podcast guys!
    Ever since Season 84, the narrative in the DLSU-UP matchup has been La Salle's Big Men vs. UP's guards. That matchup is going to be even more pronounced with the departures of Evan Nelle (arguably the best point guard in the UAAP last season) and Malick Diouf (arguably the best Big Man and FSA last season). Both teams will have to double down on their strengths this time around, and that was seen in this game. JD balled out, while Motor Mike, Agunnane and KQ were given more of the offensive responsibility.
    If this Filoil barnburner is a preview of the Finals, Season 87 can't come soon enough!

      As a big man's sport, traditionally it's bigs > guards in basketball. Yuap included, as what last season showed
      Let's see if that remains the status quo, or it will be the reverse this year: up guards > dlsu bigs

    What a luxury to have this season for UP. JD and Janjan for PG sa UP. Janjan Felicilda functions as TJ Mconell of Pacers. Such a pest and creates so many chaos and fast points for UP. 👍

    • @bolerosph
      @bolerosph  29 днів тому

      The only downside is if Coach Gold plays Janjan over JD again 😂 we will lose our minds if it happens again
      But yeah, Janjan has proven to be a starting caliber PG in the UP as shown by his stint in NU

  • @Donn2k
    @Donn2k 29 днів тому +3

    Lasalle needs a legit PG. It's really their problem, their frontcourt is already solid and imo the best in the UAAP. All they need is a playmaker and they would be set. Props to David but I think he performs best as a backup pg and as a 3&D guy. Rubico is struggling even in the preseason, Alian is a defensive oriented guard. I really want to see Buenaventura but I'm not sure when he will arrive, he is a 6 ft playmaker and that's exactly what they need. Even then, rookie guards tend to struggle more in the UAAP compared to rookie wings/bigs. At the end of the day still lots of time to go before the start of UAAP and adjustments will for sure be made. Who knows, it's Lasalle, they might even recruit a point guard out of nowhere and we'll all be surprised.

    I'm curious with the discussion on the usage and playing minutes, or the lack thereof, of players like Briones, Lopez and Torculas. Isn't it a function of the opposing team, how they would match-up against the opposing lineup? I'm not so technical in watching the game, so I hope I can be enlightened. Thank you!

    • @bolerosph
      @bolerosph  29 днів тому

      Lopez and Torculas had similar roles as last season. Our only comment was that we thought we would see more minutes at the wing and for Lopez, more perimeter playmaking or ball handling. Because to be honest, if he wants to make it to higher tier pro leagues, he has to be a wing, not a power forward

    • @bolerosph
      @bolerosph  29 днів тому

      For Briones, we thought that with the departure of Cansino, minutes would open up for him given his shooting. But it looks like UP will still funnel the minutes to the guards
      And yun nga, if they wanted to match up with a big DLSU line up, they could have played big with Lopez/Torculas at the wing or playing Briones, who is 6'4

    • @pinoybonedoc8785
      @pinoybonedoc8785 29 днів тому +1

      UP wanted La Salle to adjust to them and it worked in UP’s favor. It is a function of matching up with the opposition with regard to the minutes.

    • @rcd2005

      @@pinoybonedoc8785 DLSU couldn’t play KQ as a wing much for the game because his suspect ballhandling was being exploited. He’s a better playmaker on the post. As a wing reduced to an outside shooter siya. Saglit lang nagamit ng DLSU yung Henry-Mike-KQ lineup because that would have been too slow. Poli was a better fit kapag “big” lineup na.
      Tl;dr The “small” lineup worked for UP because whatever weakness UP had on the post was nothing compared to the advantages such lineup presented in other areas (forcing turnovers, creating mismatches, increasing the pace, etc.)

    • @pinoybonedoc8785
      @pinoybonedoc8785 29 днів тому +1

      To add on sa discussion on the minutes of Briones and Torcullas. I think it should also be discussed that UP had a back to back and that Torcullas and Briones will be the ones playing that game more kaya siguro di masyado ginamit for the LaSalle game. They played great that game.

  • @CarloRago
    @CarloRago 29 днів тому +2

    Additional takeaway:
    1) UP focused on preventing Agunanne and Phillips making post up moves causing them to have 5 and 4 turnovers respectively.
    2) The game felt like a regular UAAP game as the arena was packed with supporters from both schools.
    Hope to see you at Filoil this Friday and Saturday!

    I was looking for 2 things for this game. First, if the frontline of Lasalle can bully UPs Frontline like last season. Answer to that is not anymore. Mike Phillips, Policarpio and Raven Cortez could not do what they did to Diouf to Udodo or Stevens. Also Alter has improved significantly from last season. The second thing I was looking at was the PG to replace Nelle. Unfortunately with 25 TO, there is no answer for Lasalle at the PG position. One can argue that they can get a one and done PG from the US. However, it takes longer for a new PG to integrate to a team than any other positon in Basketball. If that was their plan then it should start now. But still, excited for the Filoil tournament.

    • @bolerosph
      @bolerosph  28 днів тому

      Agree on your points Sir! Especially on the integration of a Point guard. Guards usually have a harder time transitioning to a new league. Lasalle will have to double down on its front court advantage and hope that their current players gradually improve playmaking wise throughout the off season. But they are more than capable of be B2B champs. Same chances as UP to win it all come season 87, in my opinion. -Maui

    Regarding disappointment with UP's small ball, I share the same feeling. I am tempted to say that Coach Gold plays favorites to his wards but we are not there during their practices. We are not the ones who think about player combinations and minutes on the floor for a living. So the logical side of me says that the coaching staff might be seeing wisdom in playing small against DLSU at least. Kasi kung ako yan I'll play Udodo, Gani, Lopez, Abadiano and Cagulangan as my first five. Alter, Belmonte, Torculas, Alarcon and Felicilda as the primary relievers. Imagine the size and lenght of those two combinations, right?

    • @bolerosph

    Udodo had the most rebounds at 10 (comparatively, Agunnane had 4). Udodo is raw but his potential as a rebounding demon is massive. Wide body for boxing out, solid size, not as tall as Agunnane but has a lower center of gravity which is better for establishing rebounding position (think Barkley, Rodman, Reggie Evans, Elton Brand, and Ben Wallace). Udodo ain’t far behind from other FSAs so no need to panic for UP. In fact, it also means UP might have stacked too much on FSAs. Udodo is still young. Gagaling pa ‘yan.

      Mike will be better. He’s acclimating himself on the 4 slot now. As to Poli, you get the good and bad when you play him. Appreciate the support even on spotify! Thats our main reason why we upload there despite it not being a profit driver for us. Lol. -Maui

    Let’s be real
    We all knew DLSU will struggle with the point guard. David isn’t just it yet and he is our best PG like to Nelle.
    KQ just doesn’t have the handles nor agility of point guard yet ( that would be scary tho if that happens)
    Tagal pa naman yan UAAP, there’s a lot of time to make up for loss ground.
    Kaya yan!
    P.s Jacob Cortez saved DLSU sa PinoyLiga 😂

    • @septemberconcepcion4866
      @septemberconcepcion4866 29 днів тому

      Jacob Cortez is too far from Nelle. Although Nelle looks soft, he is a cold blooded guy. IQ wise, he is way ahead of Jacob. Jacob needs time. I think one UAAP season is not enough for him to mature like Nelle. DLSU cannot afford to have a PG less than Nelle because the opposing team will be too much. Shooting alone is not enough to win the title. Playmaking is a must.

      Yeah it sucks that Cortez and Baclaan will be eligible come seasom 88 pa. They probably have to get a one and done or rely that someone from the current lineup steps up and become better playmakers. I see VJ david improving along the way as he plays a different role this season. -Maui

      A lot of Uaap players play into their mid 20s. Up was just able to take advantage of a loophole in the rule book which has been remedied already. All Teams in the Uaap have taken advantage of loopholes. Thats how the one and done, two and through players actually have been more prevalent. -Maui
