With all due respect, at his age, it is not appropriate to dig your fingers in soup bowls to fish things out, pick up meat and dumplings with your fingers. It's unhygienic to eat with hair in your face and gets in your mouth. You are out in public in a restaurant! Table manners is really a part of overall etiquette, not anything to do with if you're "good at using knife a fork so it's easier" type thing. Such a poor reflection on not just the parents, but Arial! I love you guys, just can't understand why?!

Ibby W You're right, I absolutely was not. But my parents educated me and correct me on what is the proper etiquette, rather than make justifications on why picking food with my fingers is ok and I don't need to use knife and fork because I'm not good at it.
What's so harsh about learning etiquette? I'm not criticizing their family, just stating etiquette needs to be taught. I actually think they have a great dynamic.

Here we go with the "learn how to parent comments" please, you people are sad. In my opinion, he's 10. He's still learning, and he's not as bad as some grown adults I've seen. Doubt any of you would approach a grown person and say the same thing. Leave it be, and just let them enjoy. It's celebrating, and people celebrate how they want. Also eating of the hands is acceptable in many cultures around the world, so let's not get too picky.

Tim Nguyen Burping at the table is also accepted in certain countries but it's not acceptable to do it while living in another country where it is not the culture. I don't think you, as a functioning adult, will ever eat with your fingers and or burp at a table in public. You're right, kids make mistakes and are still learning at his age, but this gives more reasons why education and corrective actions are so important.
