I have just purchased a Brother scan n cut SDX 2200...I've never had a cutting machine before and just wanted to know if the machine I have bought will do the 'fill' function. I have the foiling kit....not the foil quill...is it different....would I need the foil quill kit... ???
Your machine will definitely do the fill option. The foiling kit from Brother will also work. It uses glue rather than heat and pressure to do foiling like the Foil Quill does but it should work decently for you. If you decide it isn't quite meeting expectations, buy the foil quill. I'd get the medium tip only and give it a try!
I have a Cricut too. I love the Brother for cutting out stamped images and for making my own files as the software is more flexible for designing, though harder to learn. Cricut is great for quick work and is a good machine in it’s own right, especially if you don’t want to make your own designs. I think the Brother is worth it just for cutting out stamped images. It saves a TON in die costs and pays for itself that way. I wouldn’t like to have to give up either machine. I’m fortunate to have both.
I bought the foil quill usb Kelly creates that has lots of font and alphabet, my question is, have to tried to use the individual letters to make words with. it looks like it may to difficult to align etc. After you scanned the foil how did you know what all the buttons at the bottom do. O did you say it there after the update?
Though I haven’t tried it, you should be able to use the Brother Software to edit your design if bringing in more than one image like letters. Then you can weld them so they become one image and then export to your machine for foiling. And yes the update puts the full options I showed on the video. Thx! Janet
Hi Vicki. You can email me with any questions about video setups. Happy to help you. I remember when I was struggling with the same questions. SugarShineDesigns@gmail.com.
If you have the DX model, I see no reason you can't because that model can take thicker materials like leather. I wouldn't try something that thick on the older models. Hope that helps.
I didn’t know how to do it myself so I searched for instructions and followed it. Here’s a video that is pretty easy to follow. Let me know if you have success with this. Thanks! ua-cam.com/video/7MvXsypkkCc/v-deo.html
Awesome!! I was able to update it! I have the same machine. I just bought a magnetic mat also. It does work with this machine! I was brave and tried it, although manufacturer instructions say it’s not compatible. What draw pressure setting are you using? My image had a few small areas missing.
Thanks for the tip. I haven't noticed any excess heat from doing that but I agree with your premise that it could cause overheating. I'll try to control the cords in a safer way. Appreciate your concern because no one wants to ruin their cord or cause a fire! Hugs to you, Janet
Great technique and thanks for sharing it with us.....I hope you do more with the foil.
Thanks! What would you like to see in the foil.

Can you use the pens on leather in the scan and cut

How do you get the update for the fill-in feature?

How do you know what is the latest version available and if you're up to date

Please don't wrap your cord like that as it will cause the unit to get too hot and the coils inside may crack
