  • In this video I share 7 tips for PAs and NPs interested in Emergency Medicine and getting into the Emergency Department right out of school. The ER isn't the most new grad friendly environment and many employers don't have the luxury of teaching you the ropes. Hence it's a bit difficult to land your first ER job, but once you do so you will oftentimes have a lot more options available after that gig.

what are your thoughts on being a hospitalist out of PA school, then transitioning to ER?

These are my thoughts, they are not fact: I've seen more people do ER then transition to a hospitalist PA or ICU rather than the other way around. There is usually a different mindset as the ER serves to identify problems and admit only a small subset of encounters (about 10-20%) while the hospitalist team is responsible for more comprehensive management, more labs/tests, and usually have the luxury of time (days rather than minutes/hours). If you get very comfortable with the hospitalist style I'm not sure that will transition well to the ER side of things other than knowing what types of patients require hospitalization. This is further true if your ER group wants you seeing 1.5-2 patients per hour (or more) when you are used to having a stable census with the occasional ER/direct admission pages. I don't think it's an impossible transition, but something like urgent care which is also outpatient and high volume would probably suit one better. If someone else wants to comment or share their insight, I'm happy to discuss this more.
