@NightLord128 Don't just study the kinds of column used in Greek architecture or the beauty of the Roman arch. These architects were masters of structure and local awareness. They knew their materials, land and people intimately and they knew exactly where the sun would rise, when is was coldest, where the summer breeze came from. They knew all this because they didn't rely on engineers to fix all their mistakes. Today's architecture sits in juxtaposition to the real world in order to stand out.
@NightLord128 He may say he isn't a starchitect, but he is through and through. He represents nothing more than the continuation of superficial architecture that started largely in the modern age (other wise decried as Modernist). The major difference is that we aren't building the same number of buildings as we used to and only a select few highly stylized and often unique architects can become famous. The problem with modern arch is that it focuses on style over function.
@NightLord128 There is little fame for the practical, the environmental, the efficient, the comfortable. What is striking is more often far too dramatic and symbolic to actually of real practical use. Look around you at school, everyone is trying to set themselves apart visually. It has been the key downfall of the profession and the key reason architects have been replaced by engineers and draftsmen. Traditional architects knew about structure and environment while today they know style.
Living differently? That doesn't always mean you live much better. So...! Actually is very fashional designing totally different and without references with the past. As the matter of fact the 99.9% of we see around the world DO NOT follow these neurotic ideas about architecture.
