Ritual caster for find familiar is better, it will give you another 1st level spell and it costs less. Magic initiate's 1st level spell only an be used once per day but also can be used a whole once per day. You usually won't be needing to get your familiar back or changing its shape so it is an inefficient option.
This is great for getting themes for characters. For example, I want my Warlock to "find religion" upon learning he was supposed to stop a demon from materializing in the material plane because his patron didn't like playing second fiddle. He obviously had done enough that he wasn't willing to pray to any god, but he could use Sacred Flame, Resistance, and Protection From Good and Evil just to get a leg up a potential demon incursion.
This is one of the feats that works for literally any character. The amount of customization works for builds, damage needs, role play, utility, fun, just about anything. 10/10. Only limitation is on what class/ability score combination which might not mesh well with classes that need high scores in a different stat. Also your channel has all of the cantrips and you’re working on the 1st level spells so you’re whole channel is, if you think about it, dedicated to this feat ;)
If your DM allows, try the Artificer list. Same spells, but you get the Intelligence modifier instead of Wisdom. Otherwise, Artificer Initiate is the same, but you get one less cantrip and the first level spell can be cast with spell slots after the initial use.
A Fighter, Rogue, or Barbarian who's on the Front Lines would also benefit from Blade Ward. Resistance to physical damage is real good at low level encounters to keep you from dying.
It's kind of a DM call. For the longest time my group ruled that double resistance meant immunity, most DM's will agree on the 1/4 dmg rule. I do know a couple who rule that you can only have resistance once though, so your best bet is to just ask.
Or a Paladin. For Ranger, if you have the option from Tasha's for Rangers to use a Druidic Focus staff to cast spells, then the Shillelagh cantrip is really good. The DMG says that magic staves are treated as quarterstaffs unless otherwise noted, so it should not be hard to have the Focus staff be the same. Then Rangers and Druids always have their focus at hand and can use Shillelagh on it. Magic Initiate: Druid is great for a 1st level Druid to take, as they get an extra 1st level spell and two more cantrips.
For Non-Int Spellcasters, who want Find Familiar: Get Wizard Magic Initiate. Cantrips: Make them your utility cantrips(they don't rely on spell casting ability) Basically get Light, Dancing Lights, Minor Illusion, Prestidigation, Mage Hand, Message or Mending. Use Class Cantrips for damaging/spell cast ones. Get Find Familiar. You're welcome.
I would disagree with Bane being a solid option for Barbarians and Fighters. Unless you are using rolled attributes and you happen to have a high casting stat, the DC for it will be low and easy to escape, you will end up wasting it. You want to avoid spells that have attack rolls or that are Save or Suck, because you have only 1 a day and your main stat for them is likely going to be low. For those classes I'd go Magic Initiate: Warlock. And the cantrips just utility stuff like Mage Hand or Prestidigitation. If you are high Dex maybe Message to communicate with the party when you scout ahead. Then pick Hex for 1st level spell. Hex works automatically, no save and you can concentrate on it for 1 hours, which is way better than Bane. With a Fighter specially and the multi-attack, you get one extra d6 damage on each attack. You can go nova by using Hex, then doing all of your attacks, using Action Surge and doing it again. That way even if you happen to lose concentration on Hex later due to damage, you already got tons of burst. From level 11 and beyond with 3+ attacks that's a lot of extra damage. And you could have it for multiple encounters if you keep concentration, not only a minute like Bane. Just use your bonus action to switch from a dead target to a new one at the start of the fight.
@@ChancesSpellbook Thanks! Another reason why I like this feat is that, besides all of the mechanical stuff, you can also enrich your character's background with it. Sometimes you don't want to pick a level of warlock, instead you pick this feat to represent some minor pact. Maybe you found a small statue of a dead god and began to worship it's strange allure, and now you have a few minor magical powers, and you can develop this further into the game with the DM and create a very interesting character. Make it into a strength or weakness, create drama. It's one of my favorite feats.
@@justatallguy This is great synergy! If you're a fighter, you'll likely get hit a lot and so lost concentration during the fight, so not being able to cast this at a higher level (increasing the duration) doesn't have so much of a downside
I'm kinda thinking Eldritch Blast might make a solid ranged option for a Barbarian since it scales better than the ranged weapons and does Force damage. So maybe say, Barbarian with Booming Blade, Eldritch Blast, and Armor of Agathys? Trying to avoid stuff that requires Concentration or a saving throw cause you're just not gonna have as good of stats for casting as a dedicated spellcaster or a gish class like an Eldritch Knight.
I'm creating a character mimicking a Force User, for this I have chosen monk and will multi class with warlock. In order to do this I need to cast quickly, minimize preparation and be able to cast and continue hence cantrip. Not only does it give me 2 more but also opens up spells from another class. Opens up many possibilities since it can be customized to fit no matter the focus or play style
I think the classes without Magical Damage at earlier levels could benefit from Magic Initiate the most. I had a one-shot where we ran into a Wererat and we were all out of spell slots and Level 1 Characters. I went Variant Human and took Magic Initiate (Druid) for a theme build with my Monk. Because of that I had Goodberries for health out of battle and Shilleliagh for Magical Damage. Since it works on clubs and quarterstaffs, just about any class could use it if they run into something that needs magic to hurt it.
Fighter with bard initiate. Action surge message and vicious mockery. Message lasts one round. Take metamagic adept for quicken spell and you could insult them in the middle of combat.
Hi! im playing a Level 5 Archer Figther, battel master, sharp shooter. im thinkin taking this feat so i can cast Shield since both of my hand are onthe longbow... do you think is a good idea?
I wouldnt recommend it myself. its a one time use of +5 AC for a single turn. As a fighterm you can already use armor, and if heavy armor dosnt fit with the character, as an archer you should have high dex, allowing you to make good use of light or medium armor. assuming you took the sharpshooter feat at 4th level, you probably have 16 dex, so +3. pair that with studded leather (only 45 GP, you can probably pick it up), and you have 15 AC. that isnt the best, but as a ranged character, it should be enough to block a lot of attacks. I would recommend picking up hex instead- your ability scores dont matter for it, it gives you an extra d6 of necrotic damage on attacks against the target, is a bonus action to cast, lasts an hour, and can be moved onto a different target. if you REALLY want extra AC from magic initiate, pick up shield of faith. it lasts longer, and sure the bonus is smaller, but you'll probably have it for the entire fight.
so yeah basically gona pick all feats that give spells circle of the land druid and getting the wisdom up to 30 with a lot of money .w. and then i am at the limit of spells known possible.
Fun fact! in tasha's cauldron of everything, two new options for fighting style might interest you- allowing both the ranger and paladin two cantrips when they choose the fighting style.
Imagine a Barbarian fighting an enemy with a lot of sustain and being like "this is boring now" and spam casting Chill Touch while the fighter abuses they enemy. Or barbarian is being trapped with 10ft movement due to Ray of Frost and decides to randomly cast Eldritch blast at the Ray of Frost user... That would cause some pretty funny reactions I think. Speaking of Eldritch Blast... "The spell creates more than one beam when you reach higher levels: two beams at 5th level, three beams at 11th level, and four beams at 17th level." So does that mean your Warlock level, or your overall level? If its Overall level, it's even more potentially busted than I thought.
This a question, it because it Word it. "You Learn That Spell", so if I pick "Goodberry" spell. Does this mean I can burn my 1st Level Spell Slot to make more "Goodberry"? So I have 50 "Goodberry"?
One thing i wonder. If we take it from sorcerer spell list, can we trade it for another when leveled up? And secondly, are there any other feats that we can use to get more spells for sorcerer?
for the first question: no, thats a part of the sorcerer class feature of spellcasting, and therefore does not apply to an unrelated feat. for your second question, tasha's cauldron of everything offers the fey touched and shadow touched feats, which both can increase cha and give you two new spells. the neat thing about this feat is that while you do get one free casting of each spell, you actually learn the spell, allowing you to cast the spells like any of your other ones. there are, however, some restrictions- one of the spells is predetermined by the feat- misty step for fey touched and invisibility for shadow touched. additionally, the other spell you learn must be first level, and must be from the schools of divination or enchantment for fey touched, or necromancy or illusion for shadow touched. It can, however, be from any spell list, using the ability score you increased with the feat as the spellcasting ability.
I am playing a ranger in a campaign that has been going on for about 2 years (including before I joined). The party members I have played with have been a cleric, barbarian, bard, rogue, and paladin. The barbarian and cleric left pretty earlier on, the bard is the only remaining member from session 0 after they left, the rogue and I joined at the same time (with backstory together), and the paladin joined much later. I decided I wanted to multi-class my character into Rogue because 1.) I want those class bonuses and 2.) because it can fit into the story since my character has a rogue to learn from (otherwise I wouldn't bother). We are about to hit level 8 and the only reason I am putting off leveling into a Rogue/thief like my PC's friend is because I found this feat. My character is a Hunter Ranger. She maintains her distance pretty much at all times, and as a wood elf with the longstrider spell she makes sure to maintain distance when she can. So she is already a spell caster. With the Magic Initiate Feat she can take the Message Cantrip and the Spare the Dying Cantrip that Wizards have access to. My biggest struggle with choosing hunter was that I really loved animals personally but her character was just not suited for Beastmaster. With this feat, she can use find familiar. Everything I loved about the idea of beastmaster is resolved with this basic 1st level spell that doesn't need repeated casting. I've been toying with the idea of multi-classing her into a rogue/ranger since LVL 6 and I was 100% ready, fully mapped out her levels until LVL 20 with 1 more feat option. I found this feat and decided, 1 more Ranger level with this feat, then 3 levels of rogue.
Spare the dying is only on the cleric and artificers spell list my guy... So you can't have messge as well because the spell you pick needs to be on that list. So if you want find familiar, you would need to pick two wizard cantrips because find familiar is only on the wizards list. So firebolt or messge or mage hand. Soooo
If i were to use this i would get control flames mending and find familiar for my gloomstalker ranger as i could snuff out the torches of a dungeon so i could not be seen even by things with darkvision mending for some more utility and find familiar cause i want a familiar also i dont want any of the other lvl 1 wizard spells
Can i take this feat twice? im playing a level 5 fighter... i can take a feat a t level 6 and 8... cous i take thisone twice so i don have to multiclass? i want to take Shield and Find Familiar.
Unfortunately, to my knowledge, no. a feat that can be taken multiple times will state that it can be taken multiple times, such as with the elemental adept feat. you can, however, acquire find familiar with the ritual caster feat, alongside one other first level ritual.
Weird, I just checked DnD Beyond and it has it listed there. "Choose a class: bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, warlock, or wizard. You learn two cantrips of your choice from that class's spell list.
