Imagine you're a demon trying to haunt a guy. Then he starts spazzing out flashing his cross around. You then get exorcised and sent back to hell. As you disappear, you faintly hear the guy yelling "Get noscoped!".
I saw the developer give a talk at GDC a few years ago. It was probably the coolest talk out of all of them, and was fun to see how much work he put into the rotoscoped segments of the game. It's amazing how good a horror game he was able to make with so few resources.
He would cloth himself in a towel or something and run out of a doorway toward a camera then rotoscoped it to look like a ghost jump scaring you. He showed the original ref footage and was very intelligent in using a different style of motion for the jarring scary moments. I think he took cues from Courage The Cowardly Dogs tendencies to switch animation styles to make things unsettling. Same with uncanny sound design. Really impressive for a shoestring budget. The talk might be somewhere on UA-cam
The lore that came from the mirror demon thingy is basically you "John" lying so he can get out of the psychiatry and continue his mission to save Amy from the demon that possessed her
Pyro did it; he finally played a fucking horror game where the mentally ill and emotionally compromised main character isn't just fighting their inner demons and having a multi-hour mental breakdown.
well, horror is something where one has to be creative, and generally less is more. Indie devs have the small budgets and creative freedom to create a horror game unlike big aaa companies
