Man, when I say I miss “complete” games; this is what I mean - unlockables, multiple modes, cohesion between said modes, etc. I miss these sleepover games.
The Soul Caliburs for Dreamcast and Xbox were the best. That side step was a game changer. I would always win against my friends with movement and that side step. The characters and the stages were great. I played all the different modes, won all the artwork, weapons and outfits. So much fun.
The weapon master mode really kept me playing this one back in the day on ps2. Similar to sf alpha 3's world tour mode having different parameters and criteria for a match. I love stuff like this, along with the many unlockables.
Super awesome review, Camp Xbox. Soulcalibur II is one of my favorite fighting games and my no.3 favorite Original Xbox game. It's an awesome nostalgic fighting game, the roster is awesome, even though I mostly enjoy playing Raphael, Yun-seong, Taki, Ivy, Seong Mi-na, Link and Heihachi. Spawn was also fun. Keep up the awesome content 🤠👍🏼
Thank you for talking about the visuals. I wish more people would talk about how good this game looks in 720p on original Xbox hardware. It's a reminder that the original Xbox was technically the first HD game console (even though it effectively wasn't since most devs prioritized visual artistic style over performance-oritented design). What engine does it use, and why was it never used for 3d platformers? It's one of the best looking AND smoothest AND highest resolution games on the original Xbox and that's amazing to me. It's amazing to me how there's no actual reason to own Soul Calibur 2 HD since the game runs in 720p on original hardware and the Xbox 360 (and it stretches forcibly to wide-screen, which many people consider "unplayable" due to the incorrect aspect ratio).
It wasn't used for 3D platformers as the memory is FULL with two characters and one small room, and would have to re-load like it does between matches to travel further than the distance of one fighting stage, or have a different enemy on screen. There's no on the fly data streaming built in because you don't need that for fighting games, and stopping for a ten second load every time Mario moves about half a second at running pace, so that you can move for another half a second before another ten second load, would have made for an awful platformer. Soul Calibur 2 HD runs at 1080p in widescreen, not just 4:3 @ 720p or 16:9 @ 480p like on OG X-box does, it was also playable online not too long ago, it might still be even though it's delisted but there won't be any players (I was testing lag having my Series X and one X for 'lan parties' through X-box live as the games I wanted to play like that don't have LAN networking, and the two me's were the only people in the lobby, also nearly lag less btw), and you got achievements. You did NOT get the story/mission mode thing however, but all the weapons you could win in it (and all the unlockable characters from it) were available from the outset, or that could have been the first Soul Calibur HD version I'm getting it mixed up with now I think about it, but it's far too late for me to check now, I'm having my diet hot chocolate and a spliff and going to bed, not starting up my Series X. I wanted 3HD so bad though, a 3, 4 & 5 remaster, with codes for the first two to be played on back compat, would be AWESOME. I liked Killik (or Seung Mina in Soul Edge on PS1), but Setsuka is my main now, and 3 is her debut.
It’s wild to know that while the GameCube version was probably the more popular version of the game (thanks to Link as a playable character), the Xbox version was considered the best version of the game. Fast load times, highest resolution and spawn was a good addition.
The native 720p output of this on component cables was some of the cleanest you would ever get on the console. Beautiful, crisp 4:3 bliss. ❤ this game solely made me happy that I picked up the stupidly overpriced cables back in the day. That said, it was so depressing to go from this to all the other 480i & even in a lot of cases poorly done 480p content that was ubiquitous at the time.
I have 0 nostolgia over this game. Recently got it last year and played the Gamecube version on my Wii. The style and feel of this game is UNBELIEVABLE and it quickly turned into one of my favorite fighting games! Great review!
I love Soul Calibur. Spawn was a great addition. The sequel is certainly a refinement, although It was missing a few things as a fan of the dreamcast game.
I absolutely love the Soul Calibur series!!! My favorite in the series is the 2nd game. We are well overdue for a new Soul Calibur game. C'mon Bandai Namco!!!
This is easily top 5 OG Xbox game for me. SC on Dreamcast still holds the crown as my fav SC game of all, but this one is a close 2nd place. I actually think that SC2 is probably the best SC game from a content and fighting engine standpoint, but SC1 is so easy to pick up and play and it has a special place for me as I bought it and the Dreamcast together on 9-9-99. What I love about this game is that it brought back the different unlockable weapons for each character that first appeared in SoulBlade on PS1. Also I was a big Spawn fan so that also helped lol. I remember when the world premier of this game appeared in the Oct 2001 issue of EGM it was implied that SC2 could possibly be a GameCube console exclusive due to their preview footage provided by Namco only being for a GC version and no PS2 or Xbox versions were confirmed at that time by Namco. I was so mad lol, I wanted it to be on Xbox and luckily it was. Also the name SoulEdge wasn't just in Japan, the arcade version of the first game was SoulEdge. Great review of one of my favorite games, loved it!
Glad you enjoyed the review and thanks for sharing the memories! Thank you for the tidbit that the arcade version was called Soul Edge here in the states.
The gamecube version of this game was my favorite only because I feel like Link the best exclusive character and it felt like Namco did the most work / effort regarding their addition.
Out of all the soul calibur games I've played soul calibur 3 has to be my favorite. It's sad that in later installments the never brought back chronicles of the sword.
The original Soulcalibur was one of the first games I had for the Dreamcast, so I was looking forward to SCII. I had a Gamecube, but had never played a Zelda game at that point, so it was the Xbox version for me. In fact, it was one of the few Xbox games outside the launch that I got upon release. Best Buy had a special where if you bought this game on any platform, you got a discount on Pelican's multi-platform arcade stick. From a utility standpoint, that's a great deal, but the stick itself is not that great. Either way, SCII was the first fighting game I really learned how to play with an arcade stick. And yes, it still holds up so well today. Hell, so does the original on Dreamcast.
...I....dude I literally just pulled this game on xbox out to play with my friend today without knowing you posted this. That is super eerie and hilarious that happened on the same day. XD
The other cameo characters may make more sense in terms of cameos. But Spawn is awesome, and a massive shame we won't ever get a good movie from it. Especially another version with Keith David
Wish Soulcalibur 3 came out both GameCube and Xbox considering how well they each sold…I guess the PS2 was just too far in sales….oh well. At least Soulcalibur 2 was amazing and seeing Link was pretty dope!
It's really interesting that they brought Spawn in a fighting game, way before MK11 did. Makes sense for him to be an Xbox exclusive character due to his edgy design.
Man, when I say I miss “complete” games; this is what I mean - unlockables, multiple modes, cohesion between said modes, etc. I miss these sleepover games.
Agreed! It was 100% a sleepover game with so much to do.

Still the greatest 3D fighter of all time.

I've never been a huge fan of fighting games but SC2 was one of my absolute favorite games as a kid

I had the one on Gamecube with Link...
He was the only character I played with

Thank you 👍

This and MK Armageddon were the fighters that got me into fighting games
Soulcalibur IV was my first soul caliber game I played and I loved it! I have yet to play Soul Caliber 6
Soul calibur is my favorite fighting game series. 3 is my favorite but 2 is right behind it. Taki and Cervantes were always my favorites.
I love when games have exclusive content for each platform but the inclusion of spawn for the xbox version was so weird to me, but welcomed it anyway
Yeah I think it's a fun gimmick to make every version a little different.

Haha great minds think alike!
3:14 Bro we had soooo much trouble fighting Cervantes as Ivy in the arcade mode tonight. Like, it was ridiculously hard for some reason. 😅
I remember the massive hype surrounding Soul Caliber 2, great time indeed.
It really was a great time in gaming!
8:32 I'm getting hella PTSD from this Berserker Dungeon we were playing tonight. XD
Lol @ using Ivy's alternate costume in all footage of her to avoid demonetization.
It's funny I didn't think of that. I just liked the costume, but maybe it did save me lol
Another proof that Xbox could be Dreamcast 2

I prefer Dead or Alive 3, though. It's one of the best fighting games I've ever played. Soul Calibur was a great game, though.
I can't believe they never thought of putting the Prince of Persia in Soulcalibur
Can't believe you intentionally chose Ivy's naval officer uniform over her default armored bikini. That should be criminal.
It is criminal! My trial date is coming up 😭
