PhD in theology : you would be doing exactly what? Teaching in seminary? Little chance of that as jobs are few and far between. Best to have a guaranteed job waiting for you before going to do a PhD for that reason.

Do you know of any online Ph.D. programs?
My goal is teaching on the university level. My alma mater (where I earned the MDiv) offers a DMin online. I'm hesitant b/c I don't want to disqualify myself for teaching positions before I even start.

I don't think there is much difference in the actual degree. They would be equally good for teaching in a seminary but a PhD would probably better (just in how it looks) for teaching in a religious studies program at a university.
