Still riding in Iowa! I commute 2.2 miles one way to work every morning. When it's below 32° F, I take the battery inside when I leave the bike outside for a long time. I'm 58 and ready enjoy riding, just have to dress in multiple layers and take your time, and also have studded tires.
We’re in Appleton right above you. I’ll be 69 in March and my husband 66. We ride most of winter as long as there is no ice. We do try to stay above 35 degrees though. I ride with 4 layers of clothes, insulated booties, balaclava underneath my Helmut which includes a face mask and insulated gloves. Nice and cozy. Balaclava has made a big difference this year
I feel like the baby of the bunch. I'm only 60. For some reason I like to ride when the weather is a little warmer. This Christmas I just purchased two ebikes for my wife and I (Magicycle's Ocelot Pro's). We went to Ocean City Md. this past summer and she saw some folks riding ebikes early in the morning down the boardwalk and said, "That looks like fun. I wish we had bikes." She had knee replacement surgery, so she doesn't like the cold weather. But looking forward to teaching her how to ride an ebike and going to the boards this summer. Thanks for the info you pass on to us.
I have to ride my bike to and from work. I wear a full size motorcycle helmet, electric gloves and electric vest under my winter coat, fleece leggings under my pants, thermal socks and winter boots. Right now it is 20 degrees with a wind chill of 7. It will be a cold ride to work 🥶
Great tips. I usually won’t ride around 50 degrees and below. I also take consideration of sun and wind. If there is little wind and sunshine, it’ll feel warmer. Thanks Russ!
I'll be 68 in March and I ride through the winter. My coldest ride so far this winter was 12°. I have two e-bikes I use when the roads/trails are snow or ice-covered. A Velotric Summit 1 that I put studded tires on and an Ice brand recumbent trike with a Bafang mid-drive. The trike has a very low center of gravity so no worries of falling. I can ride on glare ice and 3-4" of new snow is an absolute blast. Deep snow is the only thing that stops me, and only until they plow the roads then I'm back out riding.
When you fall at 68 years old and you will eventually fall your recovery will be long and painful. Your pushing the envelope and asking for trouble. You say you ride on ice! Why who are you trying to impress. Listen to Russ. Don't ride on ice and snow especially at 68 years old.
@@bigguy1403 I'm not trying to impress anyone. I ride for exercise and fun. Most of my winter riding is on a recumbent trike with no risk of falling. I ride my upright bike with studded tires when the roads are mostly clear with just an occasional snow or ice patch. I rode 10,500 miles last year and well over 100,000 miles since I started cycling back in the 90s. I've crashed/fallen more times than I can remember, including twice last year. Only twice in all those years/miles was it on snow/ice, even though I rode every winter. I'm well aware that the older I get the more care I should take, hence the trike.
@Joerides7 don't do it brotha your pushing your luck. I stopped riding motorcycles for the same reason. If I got into an accident at my age, I could be doomed. And I'm 2 years younger than you. I'm just saying... Good luck with your ice riding.
I’ll ride in cold, but I won’t ride in ice/snow. Riding in the cold is generally not for a fun ride, more an errand sort of thing. I rode to pick up a few groceries in 20 degree weather before Christmas, but that was 5-10 or so minutes each way. It’s snowy here and looks like it will be for at least another week, so it’ll probably be at least that long before I ride again. I do wear warm clothes and a hat (balaclava under helmet) and gloves, and generally just do short “mission” sorts of rides. I don’t find it fun riding well under freezing, but I can deal with some discomfort for a little bit. It’s not worth risking breaking a leg on ice, though.
I rode today, 10 Deg F. I use a facemask and full face helmet. Only thing I found is I need better gloves. Going to try a double glove next. I ride a Wired Cruiser, maxed out @ 35mph.
I'll be 69 in June and ride during the winter here in NorCal. Low 60's this week, perfect for riding. I'll ride if 55 degrees or so and higher, dry roads with no high windy days. I'll wear a balaclava. covers the head, ears, mouth and neck, top/bottom long johns, lined pants, gloves and goggles, sweatshirt and light down jacket. I hate being cold🤣Under these conditions, I'm riding 2 times a week, off days (2) going to the gym with Mrs.K. Working 2 days a week but still plenty of free time. Had to go to Costco the other day to get their rotisserie chicken! You're a Costco influencer🤣🤣😆
Aloha, Russ! Ideal 365 riding weather in Hawaii. Usually ride 5-7 miles, 3-4x/week, at least. Older 48v battery(+2.5-3y/o) prevents more frequent riding. 1-2x/month will do 15-17 mile R/T, as long as battery is able!-lol..$aving up for bike w/60v battery/1500w motor....Stay Safe Ride Safer...Keep the rubber to the macadam...Mahalo for your videos!....p.s...Turning 61 in April

Winter hats that cover your ears and the pull over sock like thing that goes on your head and covers your neck with just your eyes exposed along with cold weather coat ,gloves and the long handles under garments for serious cold situations can save your life.. A bad spill, kept me from riding for two months while I healed. I was going to celebrate my recovery with a ride on my ebike in early September, except I got snake bit by a timber rattlesnake. Weekly visits, and three rounds of antibiotics got me through recovery, but another three months gone. And now it is too cold. I don't ride when the temperature is below 65F, the roads are wet, or there is ice and snow on the ground. Both my knees are shot, so I cannot afford any more spills. March and warmer temperatures is right around the corner. I can wait.
I am so glad Chicago did not get hit hard with the storm. We got about 3 inches here in PA. I need to ride my exercise bike. My body misses riding my ebike. I do not like the cold and with a wind chill it would be awful to ride in that. Happy Birthday to you!
I’ll be 66 in May. I ride right up to the snow covers the road and streets. It’s been below freezing numerous times, but with the right winter gear it’s not so bad. I usually have the road all to myself. Love both channels, keep it up!!
I will definitely be riding my E bike and reviewing them on my UA-cam channel throughout the winter. But Russ, I fully understand why you don’t. I am 73 and Still blessed that I can still ride out in the winter time.
The Scandinavians are no strangers to winter cycling. They have snow plows for bike paths and actually prioritize clearing bike paths before roads in Oulu Finland
I try to put out a ride every Saturday Russ it’s not too snowy right now. The cold is brutal. Obviously if we end up with snowbanks, they push me into the road. I won’t be able to ride safely so I will not at that point.
Great video, thank you, Russ! I also wear a winter cycling beanie and a winter neck warmer/gaiter, both of which I bought on Amazon. It's gotten colder here in North Texas, but a sunny day helps.
Great tips. I quit riding in the Detroit area in November when the temps died below 50. I had intentions on riding longer, but we got too busy to fit it in. Brake pads: my two bikes have mechanical brakes. The first had noisy brakes and new pads quoted it down. My second bike, a 20x4 was going through the pads quickly, though they worked well. I replaced the pads before riding trails with wet leaves for a little insurance. I took some chances with that bike this fall, going off paths. What a blast! Hands on the brakes, stay between the trees and pray constantly. I met a young couple at ab landing after a big descent and they asked if I just came down . Yes and I'm unscathed! They said they never go down that pussy of the trail anymore. 😊 Happy birthday Russ. I too will celebrate a birthday on the 12th, my 69th!
I wear a KN95 mask over my mouth/nose....works great as a windbreaker and to filter things. My helmet also has a liner and a face-shield to protect my eyes from the wind, which also works great. I also have heated gloves, but they don't really work that well on the fingertips, which is where it's always coldest. This combo works pretty well down to high 30s/low 40s for my 5-mile commute....but only when it's dry.
No yellow vest on this ride😮. Lower tire pressure, foot protection for cold feet is a must and a jacket or I wear a snowboarding jacket that keeps the wind out. Rode the other day in 25° weather and transitioned from concrete path to a wood bridge and went down instantly on the moist wood. Lesson learned on that one!
The background video was recorded two years ago. I was much heavier then as you can see! Two years ago, the vest I had was a lot tighter fitting and so when I had the sweatshirt on, it didn't fit well. Today, I have larger safety vests that will fit over more clothing, plus I weigh a lot less now and my own body size is smaller, so the vests will now fit over the extra clothes.
Buy yourself a Neck Warmer and an Emergency Poncho in case you get caught in torrential rain or heavy snow that sticks to your coat, they make them really small and you can put one in a battery bag or rear rack 🍺🇨🇦
Slipping on ice is a concern. Not going out to avoid getting sick I disagree with. You need to come in contact with a cold/flu/other virus to get sick. You won't get that outside on a cold day exercising. You will get that when you're at work for hours near people who have kids going to school every day, grocery shopping in a crowded store, etc... As for biking my only advice is ditch the rim brakes and only ride bikes with disc brakes. Rim brake rubber gets hard as a rock in cold weather, diminishing braking power to nothing. Also all the grit/snow/salt you pick up will be on your rims and you are grinding it in with rim brakes, vs disc brakes that are over 1 foot off the ground.
