I ordered a 2009 HHR SS and specified the automatic for daily driver duty. Upon delivery I also immediately ordered and had the dealer install the GM Performance Parts turbo upgrade kit which really woke this car up! My auto trans was good until 110k miles when I replaced it with a reman unit which is still shifting great at 155k miles and the car is also still running very strong. Overall this HHR has been the best driving and most utilitarian vehicle I've ever owned, I don't want to give it up!
Great video and learned a few things, and still happy many months later with Al's tune on my Ion Redline.
I bought a used 09 auto hhr ss a few years ago because I liked the look but knew nothing about the platform. Then the motor needed replacement and I found zzperformance. I have their ldk long block charge pipes intercooler and tune and it's a completely different car. I buy everything the car needs from zzp. I have learned so much from them alone about the platform. ZZP !! another great video 👍
Thank you for the information!!!!
I got to be a part of LHU based research regarding LSPI phenomenon & solutions in a consortium at SwRI. That was one tough engine that would take thousands of hard LSPI cylinder pressure spikes (each cyl. head combustion chamber was instrumented w/cyl. pressure transducers) that would show press. spikes to 40 to 50 bar! The factory pistons were equipped with a hollow "donut" ring under the combustion face that recieved cooling oil from the squirters! Cooler pistons equalled stronger pistons. I ran them for hundreds of hrs., heard 10s of thousands of LSPI's over the several years I was part of that project & never ceased to be amazed at the durability of the LHU engine!
Great video!! I have a 09 Sky with a tune. What a difference.
i really wish there was a vid on how to replace the clutch on the kappa chassis
LET'S GO AL 🏁
What's funny is that way back in the day (mid 80s), we'd dump water through the intake on diesel forklifts, to clean the top end, during PMs. I never did see what it actually did, and it was not prescribed... but older mechs swore by it. 😆
Id love to see this video on the LTG and LSJ. But loved this video.
We have one on the LSJ already, check it out here!

I have a 2016 Buick Verano with a LHU and the intercooler piping is aluminum from GM. It was a rare thing to see and I own it. 😂
Great video!
Just some things to add:
1. I would recommend the Saab 9-3 with the LNF engine and Aisin AF40 box. Those boxes can take 800nm+. Same with NG9-5
2. Saab ng9-5 was offered with LNF in the US with Aisin AF40.
3. Common issues with LNF is Injectors fail, usually injector 4 for some reason
4. LNF is also flex capable with E39 ecu. NG9-5 in europe uses biopower with E39 ecu for LNF
5. Timing Chain is also a weakpoint
Really recommend you guys looking into the Saab 9-3 and ng9-5, especially 9-3 is still one of the best handling car. Also tuning the ECU is open source
had the porus block at 2k kms. brand new car , stock power.
I have a Equinox premier with the 1.5 LYX I'd like to know your opinion on this and what aftermarket mods do you have available!
When are the LNF Billet cams going to be back in stock!?😅
That four in that 16 camaro RS is a great engine my book it held me for 90,000 so far
Do you offer a Lnf charge pipe fab kit? Or a kit that can be modified to fit a non factory chassis that won’t effect the hp or torque numbers?
My 5 speed auto Sky Redline is still rated for 260/260 and is actually measured to have a faster 0-60 than the manual trans.
Hey y’all I have a 2008 redline automatic I see y’all talking about the intercooler what would you recommend also I’m new into motors and tuning. Also is should I pick up a speed manual or leave it automatic.
Been waiting for this video....
The background music is way too loud.
I have seen videos of Miatas roaring with the infamous 2.4 Ecotec, which is an Equinox engine. Anymore information? Video?
What is considered high rpm for the lnf. I tend to engine brake because my brakes squeek when its cold. I mostly have it hit 3k, woukd rev matching help
Thanks for an interesting video with a lot of useful info and history, cheers guys!
I just bought a low-mileage 2015 Opel Astra OPC, except mine's not actually called that. The model has a bit of a lumpy history here in Australia, having been sold in 2013 under the Opel marque before the brand pulled out of the market due to poor sales after just one year. It was then reintroduced with a Holden badge slapped on it and the "OPC" tag replaced by "VXR" branding borrowed from Vauxhall. Quite frankly, I couldn't really give a shit what it's called, it's an awesome hot hatch! The LNF engine gives it real punch when the turbo starts singing and the LSD + tricky HiPerStrut front-end setup gives it loads of grip. Very comfy inside, although the infotainment system and level of driver assistance stuff is obviously pretty outdated now. The performance and handling definitely make up for that though. Really fun car. :)
What about the Saab Next Generation 9-5's? That used the same engine as the Buick Regals.
Very few people realize or know that! It's definitely a slept on vehicle!
I have an 09 hhr ss 5speed manual that I am currently building with my son for his first car .. basically every zzp part you offer we have . My question is can I get 2 different tunes from you one optimize for the track and the other with reduced boost and HP for my son to daily .
Absolutely. If you do email remote tuning with us Matt can build you a street tune and then a spicy one for the track.
360whp/360wtq here with e47 and a DP
Tone down the damn background music
Amen!!! I didn't want to listen to dumb music, I came to learn about this engine!
Kappa cars were 260/260 either auto or manual. HHR auto came 235hp first and second gear and 250 3rd and 4th and 222 torque. The tune is different between auto and manual.
Oily intake manifold, high iats just to name a few more
for the F35 tranny , why zzp don't sell 4.45 fd, that will be cool
I have a supercharged ion with a 4t45e lol it’s fine
My hhr ss is my daily and it's a stick
The 1.5 is a great motor, but the trans tuning in the equinox specifically is garbage!
Try to accelerate from low RPM and it will build boost, then downshift violently. Mostly below 55mph, after that its fine
Who else thought of Need For Speed Underground 2
Hi guys I know it's not as popular but could you do a video on the lessor engines such as the le5 and lap?
Great information, from history, to what was learned, pros, cons, and potential. I learned a lot, thanks ZZP!
