A Japanese teacher actually showed this to us as an example of anime waaaaaaaaaaay back. There was something mysterious about it. As though the creators weren't treating the viewers like children. I was what, thirteen? I never finished the series, but it's stuck with me for the twenty-six years since then.
I remember buying (probably bootleg) copies of this 20+ years ago. The subtitles drove me nuts! "Sidekick Wave" and "Sidekick Sword" instead of "Psychic"
You're probably referring to the US Renditions release, labeled "Dangaio Part 1". You can still find a couple of VHS copies on Amazon, but they are prohibitively expensive. I bought a couple of them while they were still on the cheap a bit over 10 years back, along with that same company's VHS releases of Gunbuster, Dragon Century and Outlanders. It definitely helps to know how to find the history and release catalog of bygone gatekeeper companies for classics like this, especially since the master copy of Dangaioh Episode 1 was damaged when Manga Corporation obtained the rights (which is why their compilation only has a "Prologue" segment with footage from it.) It's a terrible shame, because Episode 1 is a piece of anime history and significantly better than its two sequels (particularly because Masami Obari, in his prime, storyboarded and key animated some 120 cuts from the combination sequence forward.)

This is much better than the current trend where you are distracted by the bust size of the female characters from the plot, I’m not being ironic. I am currently watching the OG hokuto no ken and loving it, gonna watch City Hunter after... the 80s is the golden age of mankind. Fuck corona.
Loved the Banker/Pirate scene later and that music was great! Also, Pai Thunder is a knockout (of course--she's a sistah of color thats why)! The Pirates would give Galactus a run for his money--they look like they don't play! Lol!
This is the worst part... I have seen alot of Anime/Manga, have a lot of it, but I have never seen this before. And that makes this a real treat for me, seeing something vintage for the first time! Awesome!
The falling out of favor of this wonderfully rich and beautiful artistic style, and the Westernization of the anime storylines, in general; circa early 00's, is why I no longer watch anime... not to mention that I'm now in my early 40's... lol. I mean, can it even still be called "Japanese" animation?
keep studio trigger on your radar. It was formed by 90's veteran animators that still put a lot of quirks and little tropes from the 80-90's in their works. Kill La Kill is crazy good old school animation done in 2013. So there is still hope.

たった３話で終わってしまったのが非常に残念。是非とも１話だけでも劇場公開してくれないかな...願わくば変な改変や追加設定無しでTVシリーズで再アニメ化して欲しい(Gダンガイオーは無かったことにして)！

当時のOVAはスポンサー(おもちゃ）ありきの物作りのTV枠を完全に取り払った実力だけで作った戦国時代でした。
それゆえ結果、才能の乏しい人の作った駄作も多いですが、採算度外視で作った情熱を超えた「怨念」すら感じる作品もたくさんあります。
ダンガイオーの誕生の経緯は「TVで金字塔を作ったマジンガーZを自由なOVAで」という発想ながらボツになってしまったが、「スパロボの部分だけでも！」という熱い思いから作られた作品でしたね。だから荒唐無稽で許される。ツッコミを入れる方が無粋。ってな流れでしたね。
分岐した「ストーリー部分」は「鋼」でしたが、うん、まぁ、多分あの時代では表現自体が発想できなかったリアル加減でしょうね。
夕方枠なのに「ここまでやっていいんだ？」って思わせたエヴァンゲリオンまで待たなければならなかったわけですから。
この作品以前のロボ物の全ての経緯とパロディを含めて詰め込んで煮詰めた、素晴らしい作品だなって改めて思います。
完結しない物語だってあっても良いはずた。
ダンガイオーチームは設定上は生きているのだから。
無論、バンカーも健在で30年近くアニメで壊滅シーンが無い組織も珍しい。

It's not a harem. Roll is not the main character, at all, and none of the girls are fawning over him. Mia is the main character.
