I've been attending hospital regularly for 6 months for treatment. The nurses are all really lovely and kind but few of them are what I would call thin.
How times have changed. In County Durham, during the winter of 62/63, after the first big snowfall, my father walked a mile through 5 foot deep snow drifts to do his shift at the nearby colliery. And he wasn't the only one to turn up for work.
A dusting of snow is no excuse for a railwayman /woman not to turn up for work. It is their responsibility to endeavour to get to work. This was the ethos in BR days even though the pay was relatively poor.

This is so reminescent of the 'Unions of Old' when striking was carried out for the most trivial reasons. Recently given a huge pay rise while the rest of us struggle and yet haven't the decency to do their damn job they are overpaid to do.

Just Google the following and look at the images : 1947; trains; snow; UK . That's when train drivers were real men not the pansies we have today ! They had to drive in open cabs and apart from the fire-box had NO heating and certainly did not have air conditioning !
Spare a thought for the men raking fireboxes, coaling and firing up long before a loco left the depot. The current brigade appear greedy and shallow to say the least. Never a real thought to the service of the public who pay through the nose to travel, and pay their wages.
Many an infection of a patient through contamination of equipment previously sterilised. Some do not wash hands regularly; simple and effective but instructions are ignored.
£600 for driving on a Sunday, what an absolute insult to the pensioners of this country who aren't allowed to have enough money to stay warm and feed themselves but the government think these people are worthy of £600 a day. Fgs

I had an operation cancelled due to my BMI being to high. I don't remember being weighed originally and after a year contacted the consultant to ask when the operation would be since originally i was told it would be around 6 months. I got a letter stating since my BMI was 30 they would not operate. What i can not work out is that, firstly they have never told me i was over weight and secondly, if i had been weighed originally, would they not re-weigh me after a year to actually see if i had lost weight.
They're just out to cause as much trouble as possible for everyone and also to show they are in control . They know there will be no repercussions for them.
I smoke I payed through taxes . Tobacco went up by 100% before pandemic £20 now over £40 for 50g so I think I payed for my treatment. Alcohol cost NHS more.

I thought our 'dear leader' had just given the train drivers a rather decent pay rise? (I know, it was Rachel from accounts, but you know what I mean). There is an answer: sack 'em! During my working life, I was at work when the office was nearly empty, with others claiming they couldn't get the car out of the driveway, because of snow! Many times, my boss(es) would remark that it was virtually pointless me being there, because nobody else had turned up (they never let me go home though!) I hear of things like this from time to time, but it appears to me that nobody wants to work nowadays, but they want money.....they have sh*t for brains. And this is on top of discovering that some of our civil servants are working from the beach! Incredible.
£70,000, a year, that is without the most generous paid holidays, and they will go on strike for more in the future, why because they will live above their means.
When i was a infant school at Sarratt, in the mid to late 50's we went to school through 15 foot snow drifts, when did this nation become a land of wimps !?! 🙄
In rural Perthshire during the 60s we would pray that the school bus wouldn’t make it through the snow and without fail it would turn up every morning to take us the ten miles along a snowbound country road to school. If the weather was particularly bad the school closed a whole 20 minutes early!
So rail drivers told not to turn up for work. It won't really affect rail services between Worcester and Hereford as the rail service between the two can be non existent. I have work colleagues and have heard other people say how trains are cancelled and late. I dare not use the train on the Hereford to Birmingham route at present as usually you can get to Birmingham in the morning but no guarantee of getting a train home as its the afternoon /evening when trains seem to stop running. Havn't been to Brum on the train for ages as no guarantee of a return sevice. Can't risk it. Yet the drivers have had a good pay increase. Its like everything these days. The prices go up but the quality of service plummets👇☹️
never mind dumping this government, we need to ditch our train drivers as well. I am sure it wont take long to replace them with less selfish people ? Time was when you were expected to turn up for duty in good time and it was up to you how you did it, even setting off a lot sooner to allow extra time to get there. of course there were days when that did not work out for everyone, getting in at 10 for an 07:30 start due to 5 foot drifts of snow blocking the road, but he majority of staff made it and the majority of trains ran. Some slept overnight at the depot to ensure they were there for an early shift.
And we no longer clear snow off our footpaths because it might make them slippery. Also are these the same train drivers who were immediately rewarded, for making life difficult for the last government, with increased pay as soon Starmer and his team entered nr 10?
I am no lover of Labour or Kier Starmer, I can assure you, but I would like to make one comment if I may. My wife needs two knee replacements but is seriously overweight. She has been told that she has to lose a lot of weight before the surgery can be carried out but it was CAREFULLY explained to us that artificial knees are nowhere near as strong or long-lasting as artificial hips and even in normal circumstances might only last 5 years or so. Much less than that if the patient is overweight. We have both accepted this as fact and I do not find any problem with this as a policy. I still love our NHS and a few years ago I needed an artificial hip and from diagnosis to successful operation was just a few, short weeks. Most of the words that Starmer utters are pure nonsense and as a pensioner I have already fallen victim to his unfeeling actions, but on this one issue of knee replacements I think the NHS has probably got it right.
Deny operations for smokers. Using that logic if you need surgery after playing sports or crashing your car. You would have to quit sports or quit driving before you can have an operation. As it’s a choice to play sports. It’s a choice to drive. Just like it’s a choice to smoke!
I just heard a comment about Liverpool dockers I worked for Salford docks and had a few trips to most of Liverpool docksive taken twenty tons of one hundred weight bags ie four hundred to be told by a checker there’s you set driver unload them there while ten dockers sat around watching another time I took a fifty ton boxed machine to the same dock and had ten divers fighting who would put two slings on the box for a crane to lift it and get tonage bonus laziest bastards I’ve ever come across in fifty years of driveing and that’s a lot of dock work I could write a book on dockersscotland to tilbury and all London docks
My father , grandfather & great grandfather were all railwaymen...They went out in all weather and on occasions my own father walked more than 5 miles to get to his depot ... They were real men ... not like the weak money grabbers of today ..

Sadly I am overweight and an x smoker who has been told I can’t even get on the list unless I lose weight. This is incredibly difficult to do without mobility due to requiring hip and knee replacement.
Some doctors and nurses are overweight, I think they need to practice what they preach first.

My father walked just over a mile on the top of hedges, due to the snow depth to get to work or else he would not have been paid.

I started working for them when the pay was poor, It is fantastic now and I don't work in snow, Heavy rain or lightning, Life is good. :)

Surely it's common place to ask patients who are having surgery to quit smoking a week before the operation. And I speak as having several surgeries.
