Educational losses due to the War in Ukraine: the results of testing 6th and 8th grade students

The results of the first year of the nationwide monitoring study of the quality of education in general secondary education institutions under martial law, which was conducted among a representative sample of 6th and 8th grade students by testing in mathematics and the Ukrainian language, were presented by the State Education Quality Service of Ukraine together with experts of the project "Support of government reforms in Ukraine" (SURGe) on August 29, 2023: sqe.gov.ua/bilshist-uchniv-6-...
The monitoring study was initiated by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the State Education Quality Service to determine and track the results of learning Ukrainian language and mathematics (algebra and geometry) of 6th and 8th grade students.
The testing was conducted on the platform of the All-Ukrainian School Online (VSHO), 6,189 sixth-graders and 6,188 eighth-graders took part in it. Pupils also answered the questions of the online questionnaire related to everyday learning.
The monitoring study will be carried out in stages over three years:
the 1st stage - in May 2023;
the 2nd stage - in May 2024;
the 3rd stage - in May 2025.
That is, the monitoring results obtained in 2023 are the starting point, on the basis of which it will be possible to determine the dynamics and trends in the following stages of monitoring. In 2023, the monitoring study was implemented by the joint efforts of the State Service for the Quality of Education and its territorial bodies (they carried out general coordination of monitoring, communicated with educational institutions, organized testing, formed databases of test results), the Institute of Educational Analytics (formed a representative sample of test participants), the Ukrainian Institute of Education Development (provided testing on the educational platform "All-Ukrainian School Online"), the project "Support of Governmental Reforms in Ukraine" (SURGe) (developed diagnostic materials (tests) for the Ukrainian language and mathematics for students of the 6th and 8th grades , conducted data analysis and prepared a report), Reform Support Team of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
