Thank you for debunking this myth... during our younger years we see everyone glamourising PHDs... and we start desiring it because of how others perceived it, instead of listening to our own heart and following our own interests.
Hey, sis thank you so much for your insights. I am 1 and half yr in..in my phD. I was called worst by my supervisor infront of my classmates. also in committee or weekly meeting he is frequently insulting me and threatened to give me an E ( extension) in this semester just yesterday in front of other commitee members. I felt so humiliated and i was crying but they keep picking on me. I'm going to quit. Being a girl and a student it was hard to control my tears 😢 yesterday. Thanks again for giving courage to all of us..for moving forward.
It happened to me too. I changed that rubbish toxic supervisor. Once they realized you don’t like to work with them. They try to humiliate you because most supervisors have serious mental health issues. What you have to learn is to throw out your supervisor from your life like a piece of garbage before they do so to you. Because they know how to crush their students with no mercy.
I am a PhD student in USA and am just leaving it right now. I did a job in MNCs before, I like the environment, work-life balance, and after 1.5 years, I feel that an academic career is not for me. I can’t work alone in lab 24x7.
Hi, your video is really helpful! I am going trough this turmoil of wether to stay or to quit. I am in my third year and I absolutely hate what I am doing. My supervisors are very good but it is the work which just frustrates me. I have been in this state since the time I started my PhD journey, I could not fathom coming up with problems for the sake of it just so they are "novel" and get published. When I talk to my parents about quitting, they get afraid about the societal pressure -- what others will say. And now I feel stuck because I feel that if I quit and come back home, my parents will be in tension about my future each day. I joined PhD as I wanted a career in academia but I totally lost motivation in it. As I am 30+, I don't have any job opportunities but I do have some plans of my own -- like starting my side hustle on investing and short term trading, online tutoring, etc. I do have savings which can support me for next 3-4 yrs without any work. It would be great to hear your thoughts.
@@phdpreneur The proposal was done but the problem was not a great one and recently someone published work in the same direction which I was thinking and did 10 times what I was thinking to do. Guys, if you are more than half way through a STEM PhD, just stick it out. I got pretty dissillusioned with it at times but I'm 3 years after my defense and I've been working in industry. Being a PhD in industry is... great. Status, significantly higher salaries, and limitless promotion potential. It's really an unfair advantage.
@@aimymanzoor2817 I'd get some more opinions. It could be that you are thinking of quitting because you think either (1) you're not good enough to handle it, or (2) you just genuinely don't like the subject anymore. If you think it's #1, it could just be some imposter syndrome/insecurity and you need a little encouragement. If it's #2 though, I would probably consider quitting. Overall, if you do decide to quit, especially if you can walk away with an MS, it's not too bad in terms of sunk costs if you're only ~1 year into the PhD. However, you should think really hard to make sure you're quitting because you genuinely would prefer to do something else with your life/career than science, or if you're just quitting because you're feeling a bit discouraged. Tl:DR It's best if you are running TOWARDS something you'd rather do, rather than running AWAY from the current situation because it feels challenging. E.g., if you feel you are more passionate about something else and would rather be doing that, that would be a more positive way to frame the situation. Hope this helps :)
