I don't think the saturation was the problem, the original game was saturated, it's a cartoon. The problem is the contrast. The darks are too dark and the lights are too bright. Very hard on the eyes. Loving the work, I can't wait for the next episode
Crazy! I made a lot of these assets 20 years ago for the original game. it was my first game industry job. When we did them originally we had to use 32x32 textures and 64x64 for billboards and characters. Its mind blowing seeing these again! Great job!
The borialis should be a random event like 1/1000 chance every night cycle as a fun little Easter egg, you could also have things fly by at night time on a small chance
14:27 In the original game i think there were subtle clouds of dust that appeared when you walked so maybe that weird trail that appeared when you moved is just the missing dust clouds. also i have a sugestion, you should add lights to the windows of some houses when it becomes night, so that the world feels a little more lived in. the project looks awesome so far!
SO glad you got rid of that vignette! That said, I don't think the saturation was an issue-the contrast, however, is still a bit too much. I'd reboost the saturation to the original levels (which were closer to the cartoon) and lower the contrast some. Elsewise, so happy to see all the progress! :D That extra bit about you devising the work-around for the UE5 crash was especially insightful.
I know its super basic but though I'd mention anyway - definitely need the street lamps to have a lot of light, that night cycle is surpsirinngly dark and hard to see in!
During level 1 as Homer, Mr. Burns mansion was locked, it wasn't until you started playing as Marge on level 4 (iirc) that the Mansion was opened. Also during the last level with the zombies you could access it
If you go to the power plant to the part where you can drive out of Mr Burns' backyard in level one, it's boarded up but you can actually go and kick it open and run around the yard. Can't go inside the mansion, but thought I'd share this little tidbit.
you can actually glitch into the mansion in level 1 with the honk to jump cheat, i remember discovering that when i was younger and just being fascinated by it
@@rellermarshall7873 I recently replayed it, there's a switch that shows the map of Springfield on a table in the middle and changes the walls too I think, the puzzle I think you're thinking of is the top floor of the power plant on the last level with the dropping floor
Highly agree, this and then AI driving so there’s essentially “traffic” get them to stop at red lights etc too and set a speed limit or cruise control for that matter for them
In my opinion I think you should aim for a more cartoony look to make it closer to the show. So more cell shading and more cartoony textures. Right now the skybox is trying to mimic the real world (vibrant clouds and hyper reflective rain etc) which is a strange contrast with the cartoony geometry and characters of the original. you should try and give it a more hand drawn aesthetic like in the original game. To get a better idea of what I mean, just look at how gorgeous the original skybox for Lisa’s level was in the original game.
Was just about to say he should try more oranges and especially purples in the skybox. The sunsets in older Simpsons episodes were always purple and orange gradients and were a nice vibe.
You are insane if you think he will actually recreate every mission in the game. It's just supposed to be a tech demo with an explorable map, not an actual full remake of the game.
@@Phoenix-ry9iz it's a shame he couldn't just get the original mission files and just include them, but then just tweak some of the things like pathways during chases and waypoints so that they fit into the new big map as opposed to all of the individual small ones.
Looks so much better without the vignette! The shadows are soooo dark though its super hard to see anything, maybe less contrast? It could be brighter overall too
When he first added the filter and said he was going to change something I assumed he would reduce the vignette then he just goes ahead and INCREASES it
A small change that would help heaps would be making the shadows less black and more blue / purple. This would stylise the game to be a bit closer to the TV show and look less dark overall which I think doesn't suit the game.
Your intro for Sponsors was brilliantly done. I actually stayed around to watch it, instead of skipping ahead. More people should put that kind of effort into it.
Night time is way too dark, you need to make the street lights come on when it gets dark! Also I think the car headlight beam should be much further and wider. Someone else suggested having the house lights come on at night and someone else suggested they be randomised, I think that would be an awesome little detail. Also, you NEED to add the OG cheats in! Incredible work so far!!
Agreed! Street lights need to turned on at night. That will make the night cycle come together. Even making signage light up and maybe windows have a yellow texture display on them to show that people have the lights on in their home (classic Spiderman game technique)
You might know this, but the trees in the graveyard are cypresses, which are traditionally symbolic of mourning and used for cemeteries. If you replace them with newer models you should probably keep them as the same variety!
I think youve gotta remember that this is the simpsons, its a cartoon, the sun moon and sky in general is too detailed and a more cartoon style would be much better for it, espoecially if you want to have clouds they should be like the title sequence clouds from the episodes
Do you think the shadows are a bit harsh? It’s either dark black or no shadow. There doesn’t seem to be much variation there. Lighting the houses at would be crazy too.
Will definitely need to make the street lamps actually work at night, as well as light up some windows and certain signs like the Kwik-E-Mart sign. The night cycle is awesome but Springfield feels like its in a massive power outage at night, which is strange for a town literally built around a Nuclear Power Plant. In the long run though, this will add to the fun of the gameplay... because at night you can decide to completely black out certain streets by purposely driving into street lamps.
@@Wisco_collector hm? Oh gosh dangit yea so i was commenting on comments that some scammer was commenting on.. must've clicked on the wrong comment 😅 sorry
Maybe it’s because you’ve lowered the saturation and removed the vignette, but the shadows look a bit too dark/contrasty. Otherwise things are coming along nicely, keep up the good work ☀️
@@Rat-n-Monkey_Productions Lol I saw your other comment, it keeps scrolling back up for me as well when i'm trying to scroll down, nearly commented on the wrong one so many times
Seems like the shadows are a bit strong? When you were showing a lot of the in game footage it was quite hard to see stuff that was covered by a shadow
Worth noting that uploading to UA-cam does darken and compress videos more so than the actual video seen in person. The shadows do appear to be more than one would typically want, even with ray tracing capabilities.
There are a LOT of things wrong with the visuals. Too many random post processing effects slapped on, overly complicated shaders that don't fit, and not taking into account how the Simpsons cartoon actually looks. No eye for art style or consistency. It's kind of frustrating, these videos get so many views but he's not doing a very good job. In these modern times it would be super easy to make a Simpsons game that looks really close to the cartoon but not if someone insists on just adding a bunch of "photorealistic" crap on top of it.
100% agree the contrast/black point is way too high, when compared to original SHAR it looks way too much, the trees are almost black and can barely see at night
If I remember correctly he decreased the GAMMA scale of the Tone Mapper in the first episode, that cause the brightness and darkness of the image to be compressed into a smaller scale. Meaning slightly dark areas like tree shadows become really dark because the brighter hues of black and darker hues of white were removed.
These videos really express the pure joy of game programming. When you finally makes something that just looks really good and that you are really proud of. It's a great feeling.
Other programmers: "There's a software issue, and we'll have to wait for the patch from the original manufacturer before we can proceed." Reubs: "Fine, I'll do it myself."
I think it would be interesting if during the night hours, there were fewer pedestrians, including no kids. And, if possible, since there's a day/night cycle now, for there to be the passage of time like showing the days of the week so there could be teens/kids around at night during the weekend and quests that can only be done on certain days. Maybe that's a bit much, but thought I'd share that idea!
This game was my childhood. Loved it so much and I finished it way more often than any other game I ever played. I REALLY hope tp somehow be able to play this remastered version. I‘d even pay the full price of a modern AAA game for it.
Would it possible to make the headlights turn on automatically when something in the code detects "time = sunset"? I think it would be neat and time saving, plus if it is applied to all NPC traffic, that'd be cool too.
To have the streetlights turn on and off at dusk and dawn would also be great, as well as having some of the house windows emit light at night or in the evening and early morning.
fun fact, = is the assignment operator. So if you wrote "time = sunset" it would *always* be sunset. == is the comparison operator, so for your idea of automatic headlights you'd want to write "time == sunset".
It's a really dumb thing. Why bother even doing this project? And if you do, why bother showing it to people? All you're doing is wasting your own time and everyone else's.
The remake is coming alone amazingly, I just really must say that the visuals are kind of driving me insane. Such wildly harsh contrast in the shadows, and out of place photorealistic rendering in places... The day-night cycle is cool and all, but the nights don't look anything like nights in The Simpsons, let alone night levels in Hit & Run. It's almost like an A24 horror movie akin to It Follows or something. Don't you think it'd be worth studying the colour grading of the show to try and match the feel? The show really just never uses such strong black tones for its shadows and it's leaving the project looking increasingly uncanny as the visual flairs continue piling on.
He's definitely more of a programmer than an artist (no offense). Right now the game kinda looks like one of those "Nintendo hire this man" Reddit posts. In the previous video someone was commenting how the reflection effect on the windows doesn't fit either. That keeps driving me crazy every time I see one. As for what you were saying, the nights in the show aren't really all that dark, they just have a different, blue-dominant color palette. So he would need to make the nights a LOT brighter, and I guess do some sort of texture swap transition or something instead of relying in UE5 lighting. Otherwise the nights in the game will never look like the ones in the show.
For real, he doesn't seem to have an artistic eye whatsoever. He needs to pay more attention to that side of things. He's to easily impressed with being able to change anything at all just for the sake of it.
If I remember correctly, the interior to mr burns’ mansion was non accessible in level 1. When you return to the level 1 map later in the game as Marge, you could enter the mansion. Also in level 7 Homer was able to access MR burns’ office in the power plant after a ufo crashed into it
7:02 the inside of Burns' Mansion and the front courtyard was only accessible on level 4 (the nighttime/Marge version of level 1). All the assets were included on both levels though. It was probably a late development decision to close it off from level 1 and in 2003 it was just easier to add a gate to the front yard and locked door to the backyard.
@@hunte5748 Oh yeah, I agree 100%. If Reubs goal is to make the whole game open world, then for sure, combine everything that every individual map had to offer.
I'd love to see this with a cell-shading post process, I think a 50/50 blend would look great. I would also up the ambient black level lighting. street lamps lighting would add a whole new look to it. looking really good man
Just my 2 cents: The shadows and night just seem _way_ too dark. It seems pretty common in games for shadows to have way too much contrast and idk why. Especially in something cartoony and light like Simpsons, it just looks very off. Seems like it would also help the whole nighttime issue if it wasn't just soooo dark. When you cut to those clips of the original it just looks so much nicer in terms of the contrast of the light and dark. You don't even need headlights to see at night in the original. In the new one it's like very nice and bright in the light and basically night time in the shade, or the other side of your character etc.
100% agree! The black point is way too high it makes it look so weird, the farm barn is usually bright red and in the clip when he jumps the tire pit it’s almost black. Wish he would change it
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. It makes cartoony games all look horrid. It's weird because in the PS2 days this wan't a problem. Hell even some later games like Sonic Unleashed look great.
Just so people know if you've never actually baked a game before - this is just a lighting and shadows issue. At this point none of the lighting is baked in and the shadows are therefore incorrectly rendering on objects depending on light direction. He would need to create appropriate sky lighting, environmental lighting and individual asset lighting and their radius/brightness. Then he would need to bake all of the lighting in. The lighting would then not be completely correct unless the program is running; just looking at it while editing in "lit" mode for example will not show how the finished game would look.
Couple aesthetic things. 1 the car headlights need to be brighter/ have a wider cone. 2 The cars wing mirrors need the glass texture just so it’s not pink. 3 the contrast is great but nighttime playability might suffer if you can’t see. I love what your doing, I think it’s amazing and it’s a huge testament to show how far technology has come. Like how lo the original took and what you’ve accomplished in (probably) a fraction of the time. It’s great. Please keep at this, I’d love to see this with all the fully fleshed out features. But it’s equally great to see the process and the little hiccups along the way x
I love this idea! Good way to make some money on the side. Could even have it be a race against Barney with his Plow King to clean a set amount of roads/snow!
I hope you look into improving those shadows as soon as possible, they're frankly atrocious, some spots they're alright(namely the bridge where the small houses are) but throughout this video there are places where they become excessive at least in their opacity and it drags it down as a whole. Edit: Slipped my mind but it does look pretty cool and I'm glad it's going pretty well my above gripe aside :)
This is by far *the best part* about game development; when you've got a base shell of the game and you can just add new content with relative ease. It's genuinely so rewarding.
I absolutely Love your series, because you're making my childhood game come back to life, Although I think you should add more wight into the cars and characters as it looks like they have moon physics, but overall you're doing a grate job, keep it up.
6:50 for the first time you go to that zone, Mr. Burns mansion is only accessible on foot by jumping ontop of a car in the power plant, but during the nighttime version of this zone (playing as Marge during normal night, but not during the halloween night with Homer) the gates are open and you can drive around
@@vojtechrandus4077 it actually isn't, the path through the power plant is closed and the bridge past the elementary school that leads to the front of the mansion/the rear power plant exit is destroyed.
I just came across this series and I'm binge watching right now, this is something that probably not a lot of people have looked at or thought about. But the way you did your sponsorship with NordVPN was unique and awesome! Including it inside the game with the blimp, the billboards, kept me visually entertained while explaining the ad. Good job and great work on the project!
You should make it so that the Aurora Borealis has a chance of showing up when it turns night and when you get near something (say, the school), you can hear Charlmers saying that iconic line
@@Tony36271 That's what I was thinking--if you really wanted to do something crazy extra then you could make some tiny bonus where if you do things just right you cause a telescope (or something) to be pointed at the aurora and it projects directly into a window on the back of Skinner's house (ie his kitchen) and then if you drive over there you could hear Chalmers saying the line
@@scottg3192 i thought this Episode would Have been the logical one to do it, but of course it Seems like an obvious Implementation and I hope he/they does it in the next one :)
As someone who worked on UE4 Open World games with Dynamic Lighting: Double the brightness intensity of your skylight. It will improve the shadow darkness that a bunch of people have noted. Even in default Unreal Engine, the default value of 1 wasn't accurate to sunlight.
While I'm loving the project, my only constructive criticism would be to try and keep the cartoonish look as much as possible. It feels as though everything is becoming a little too realistic. Great work overall though!
This project is coming along so nicely - it's genuinely a joy to watch this take shape. Definitely need the street lights emitting light when it gets dark though, as it would just make the world feel a little more alive (not sure how difficult that is to accomplish though)
Is there a petition we can sign to get EA to sign this man as lead developer for a hit and run remake. It stays so true to the original but gives it the depth it can benefit from so much!
Fantastic work, loving this series! I think one thing that may help visually is toning down the shadow intensity on the world light. Currently the shadows are very dark during the day (notice on the trees), which can be fine for a realistic game, but makes the over-all style VERY contrasty. Not sure if this is possibly due to RTX settings or maybe lack of global illumination?
Just a heads up, if you didn't know, with the UDS plugin you can use the material functions included and pipe them in to your materials such as roads and it will automatically generate wetness and puddles or cover them in snow depending on the weather......snow will melt in to puddles too and puddles will dry up over time when weather changes.
this is so cool i love everything about this but the whole map being an island should be changed. it’s so much better with mountains surrounding, it makes it feel less alone and more like the original video game and older games in general
I hate that i didnt discover this series when it was already a couple of months old because i want to binge watch the whole series. On the other hand it's kind of like a TV series that comes out week by week but my zoomer brain isn't built for the delayed gratification

I am so happy you are doing this. It is awesome not only to see one of my favorite childhood games get the treatment it deserves, but to also receive an in-depth look as to how games like these are made at the same time. As someone who is not a developer/game designer themselves, it is all truly fascinating. I did make a huge revelation when watching this video as I pondered why an official remaster project like this hasn't been considered by 20th Century Fox, and I'm curious if anyone feels the same. The lack of a re-release has to be because Apu is one of the main playable characters in the game. The writers as well as Hank Azaria have essentially disowned this character due to the criticism of him being a racial stereotype. They could receive backlash for remastering/releasing the game as it was back in 2003, but they could also receive backlash from fans of the original game by removing him entirely. The best bet would be for them to create an entirely new version of Hit and Run with a new Springfield, missions, characters, etc., but the chances of that are slim.

You can use the snow weather to your advantage when it comes to doing Christmas themed missions, maybe during a Christmas chapter of the game. Of course this means you'd have to re-texture things with snow added, or hope there's an easy asset for it.

Thanks for these videos mate. The Sinpsons Hit & Run is one of my all time favourite games. I remember playing this in the early 2000's when it came out and never finished it. Fast forward to 2019 when I was so glad to discover that there's still a huge community and following for the game and was very delighted to play the game through with improved graphics etc. Such a joy. I just want to say thank you so much for continuing the great legacy of this wonderful game.
For a stylistic approach for your remake, I would strongly recommend that you check out Season 32 of The Simpsons, episode 4. It’s a Tree House of Horror episode where they do a spoof of Toy Story. They have a 3D segment that is really visually stunning in terms of blending stylistic realism with solid 3D objects e.g. The Simpsons skin texture. I saw this last night as I really wanted to assist you in your journey of optimising this remake to its fullest potential. I was also going to recommend a day and night cycle along with weather dynamics 😅 but it would appear that great minds think alike, since you’ve just uploading this video explaining that’s your intent. I would also like to recommend to redesign the character to give them a more polished look as the characters look significantly different from their TV personas. I great way to achieve this would be to use a software like Blender. I’m not a 3D artist unfortunately, but The Simpsons have “The Simpsons Handbook” that have the designs of The Simpsons with additional hand gestures, facial expressions, as well as locations and a few vehicle designs. If you use any of my idea, I would really appreciate it if you are able to credit me to this project, as these suggests are only a few out of many I have to suggest going forward. I really admire your ambition for this project and cannot wait to see the finished product. Bless you brother, and don’t work too hard 🙏

I'm losing my mind. Did he just set the overall saturation to 0.7 instead of just removing that ridiculous filter he applied in the first episode?? It just bothers me because this is the level of care people see put into "remaking" games. No, that tree model does not need to be "remastered", it needs to be reMADE. That means modelling, texturing and shading. Not just throwing a subsurf on it and "oh my goodness this is next level". This is like a mockery of the actual real work, and this is what people think is the level of effort that goes into remaking a game.

I have an idea about the shape of the city. Currently it is in the form of an island. This is good for preventing players from leaving the city area. Now for my idea. What if you just put a big glass dome over the city like the Simpsons movie and change it to dont be an iland anymore. The sphere would have to be made in such a way that you only notice it when you are at the edge of the map. It did bother me a bit because Springfield isn't really an island and so you could install an Easter egg from the film which would also have the function of marking the edge of the map.
he added a dome in the previous video, but still kept it an island because he'd already committed to it being an island. Tbh i wish he'd reconsider. And for some reason he removed the dome in this video. It's a shame.
I never played Hit and Run and idk how hard it would be, but what if you could add more unlockable characters? Maybe after doing a certain quest for a certain character then maybe you would then be able to play as them? I was never too into the Simpsons tv show, but I played the shit out of this game as a kid.
Looks so much better without the vignette! The shadows are soooo dark though its super hard to see anything, maybe less contrast? It could be brighter overall too
Vignette is shit
Or maybe a softer lightning. 🤔 If that's a thing. 😄
I commented on this too. It should be an easy fix. It looks more like he's missing a skylight in his scene which is why the shadows are too dark.
When he first added the filter and said he was going to change something I assumed he would reduce the vignette then he just goes ahead and INCREASES it
A small change that would help heaps would be making the shadows less black and more blue / purple. This would stylise the game to be a bit closer to the TV show and look less dark overall which I think doesn't suit the game.
good catch! I agree
Yes!
Omg yes I agree

You might know this, but the trees in the graveyard are cypresses, which are traditionally symbolic of mourning and used for cemeteries. If you replace them with newer models you should probably keep them as the same variety!

@@SkeleTonHammer Post processing effects, light, contrast and saturation is a very easy fix, anyway i agree, it´s very dark now.

Would it possible to make the headlights turn on automatically when something in the code detects "time = sunset"? I think it would be neat and time saving, plus if it is applied to all NPC traffic, that'd be cool too.
Yeah npc look to robotic he needs to give them a little more life
To have the streetlights turn on and off at dusk and dawn would also be great, as well as having some of the house windows emit light at night or in the evening and early morning.
My irl car can do it so I imagine it's actually super easy to do in a game.
fun fact, = is the assignment operator.

Yeah he needs to do cell-shaded instead of photorealistic lighting. And nights should be lighter and bluer.
Yeah, the lack of visual cohesion is somewhat jarring. I think this neatly shows how important it is to have an art director for a project like this.
@@Not_a_Lizard_ that isnt offensive every programmer knows it!
Also in level 7 Homer was able to access MR burns’ office in the power plant after a ufo crashed into it
correct, I do remember that.
yeah it was a mission for that as well
I think the trees would look more like simpsons themed if they would be remade from scratch
Yeah and a bit more bubbly and round
Definitely. Realistic shouldn’t be the goal here.
I'm pretty sure there are some traps in his mansion too, if I'm remembering correctly 🤔

Wish he would change it
Not to mention that the streetlights and houses don’t have any light sources on them
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this.
@@user-nq2fp6ov1g Interesting. I didn't know that's how shadow and night time brightness worked. Thanks for the info!
Couple aesthetic things. 1 the car headlights need to be brighter/ have a wider cone. 2 The cars wing mirrors need the glass texture just so it’s not pink. 3 the contrast is great but nighttime playability might suffer if you can’t see.

Man this series is such a masterpiece
Bro, omg. Those shadows... the way they just... work. Brilliant!
Working mirrors on the cars would bring this to a whole new level
I guess an alternative solution for the remake might be to make the gates and doors on the mansion destructible
It also works for Homer's Halloween, but you have to get a small car to drive over the gate dividing the city parts
@@vojtechrandus4077 it actually isn't, the path through the power plant is closed and the bridge past the elementary school that leads to the front of the mansion/the rear power plant exit is destroyed.

It stays so true to the original but gives it the depth it can benefit from so much!
there is still some shading polish left imo, and its quite dark at night, maybe put acual lights in the lamps, signs, stores and houses
Would love to see the street lamps on, and illuminated windows at nighttime! Looks great so far!
this is so cool i love everything about this but the whole map being an island should be changed. it’s so much better with mountains surrounding, it makes it feel less alone and more like the original video game and older games in general

@@TomGallagherSuperboyBeyond because he wanted water, and the water looks good.
I never played Hit and Run and idk how hard it would be, but what if you could add more unlockable characters? Maybe after doing a certain quest for a certain character then maybe you would then be able to play as them? This is just a mere suggestion and it's not necessary, just thought I'd throw an idea out there. Great work btw! I'm really enjoying this series!
