Klay has been a great player, a star, but he has suffered significant injuries and is 34 years old. For the same price you can get Jerami Grant and Thybulle and you get points and defense.
i think if we can have klay as a 6 man he might be less likely to get re-injured. klay as a starter is much too risky imo also he might want too much money which i don't think is worth

Not signing Brunson, not trying to make it work with Porzingis (who always was a fantastic player and now a champion), signing one of the most inconsistent and overrated guys there is (Kyrie), and now acting as if everything hinges on a league minimum guy who can’t hit the broadside of the barn. Luka is going to waste so much time with them, just like Dirk did. It’s too bad really.
Moving Maxi is the option to get both but it will have to be team friendly deals. Seems like DJJ might be on his way out with a bidding war for his services
Gotta move Maxi to get that possibility along with maybe Hardy but we'll see. DJJ just signed with Klutch sports so it seems he is making his way out of Dallas by making sure every team can get ahold of him for a potential bidding war. I hope I'm wrong and he comes back to Dallas but I won't be surprised if the Lakers get him.

Some of the Mav’s fans here In this comments section clearly haven’t watched Klay play recently. The guy looks to be on his last legs and is OLD. He most recently went 0-10 in a must-win game and his defense is no longer good…not what I’m looking for.
While I completely understand this, he also was asked to do what he had been doing for the warriors his whole career. He’s not that guy anymore. But, you can’t tell me Klay can’t sit in the corner and hit open 3’s consistently in this offense. Klay shot 39% from 3 last year. If we had that this year, we maybe are celebrating a championship. He would elevate our offense to an elite level off his name alone, what I’m most worried about is his defense. But, with us asking him to do much less offensively and putting him in good positions to where he doesn’t have to expend a lot of energy, I feel confident that he could be a solid defender for 2 more years possibly. It’s definitely a big gamble though.
I don’t think you’ve watched him play much recently. He’s no longer able to hold up on the perimeter like he used to (so would be a terrible replacement for what djj does on that end), but he’s got stronger and can do well in the post still. Offensively he’s still really good, just obviously not close to his prime, but this is a guy who in his prime consistently averaged over 20ppg on a team with Steph curry and Kevin durant so comparing him to that is just unfair. That 0/10 game was terrible but was not a good representation of how good he still is, and the whole season was unstable with him being asked to do too much, being moved to the bench, then back to the starting lineup, then back and forth, plus he was clearly looking for a contract so forced some bad shots he never normally takes
But in the Warriors offense they’re supposed to just keep shooting no matter how they’re playing. In a more static offense like Dallas, he’s going to get open looks and options to come in closer to the basket for higher percentage shots. If he could accept that he’s not as good as three-point shooter as he used to be, you could see his shooting become much more effective as he mixes in mid range shots with the long distance ones. It’s really not available to him in GSW‘s offense.
No way! I would go after DeAndre Hunter of the Atlanta Hawks before Klay. He’s younger, more athletic, can create off the dribble a lil bit, and is better defensively.
People seem to keep forgetting that just last season Klay lead the league in threes (301, career high). This year he wasn't quite as good but still 39% on threes and 93% from the line. Mavs could use some more shooting. Still I get why people aren't sure about him due to losing a step from age/injuries. Ideally Luka/Kyrie are by far the worst two defenders in the rotation. Surround them with good defenders if possible. But. And I'm arguing with myself here it seems, the Mavs lost in the Finals not due to bad defense but because they couldn't score enough. Mavs need shooters.
A few CBA clarifications: - GSW can send Klay in a S&T if they are going to operate under the 2nd apron - S&T hard caps Mavs at 1st apron. MLE is still available to 1st apron teams - conclusions, it is possible to sign both Klay and DJJ

The last thing this team needs is an inconsistent at best shooter (which is what Klay is at this point in his career) who is a negative in almost every other phase of the game. Losing DJJ and adding Klay would be a catastrophic mistake.
I would be ecstatic if somehow they can bring in Klay from free agency!! It would be so awesome. I don't care if it's older, he can still play. I believe in it. This could be the first time we are able to get a big fish like Klay..hes a big enough fish

I think Klay’s days as a great three-point shooter are over but he could still be good enough to be effective and if he added in some 15th 20 foot jump shots he can keep his shooting percentage up at an efficient level. I agree with you that the Warriors offense is bad for his shooting numbers because you’re supposed to make quick decisions about pass pass or shoot instead of an offense or you have a more stationary role and are going to get the ball in a good position from Luka or Kyrie. I would prefer KCP because she’s a defender and I’m pretty good three-point shooter and has some ability to create for himself but if he can accept his role in the offense, Thompson would clearly be the more impactful player.

I would love both of them on the mavs. A 3rd option Klay would be really good. He’d get way more open 3s, take way less iso scoring than he did at golden state. The only thing I’d be worried about is that defense.

Every time the Mavs bring an old vet that looks that can contribute he looks washed AF and later on the Mavs need to send picks to get rid of them or waive and pay with the cap. People need to learn, high risk low reward is not worth it.
Klay’s offensive for sure could offset the defense, but having defense (DJJ) is more of a constant and won’t get cold. Higher peaks and lower valleys - is that worth the $$? 🤷
I would love to have Klay but I hate to help out GSW because we had have interest in KCP but Denver is unwilling to do a sign-n-trade…can’t see him at OKC,Philly,Lakers still have work to do to get him as well…he said he wants to stay in the west and DJJ will have his contract as soon as free agency kicks off

@@Rzurkai moving around a few players that were almost unplayable in the finals is far from blowing it up. The mavericks aren’t winning a chip more than likely as currently constructed. Shooting and having a third scorer/reliable shooting was obviously an issue. You’re adding that with Klay and it cost much less than Maxi/tims salaries last season. If they can offload Josh green and Maxi, they can probably keep their core 6 guys and add Klay. With Grimes, there is no need for Josh Green and there is no need for Maxi at all.
Be patient, let it ride with what they got. Wait for a legit championship piece to get disgruntled with his team and then make a move. Kind of like what happened with KP coming from NY, no one saw that coming.
The more I think about it, it's just not a good fit. He's a volume shooter with not much defense. Maybe even a 6th man. Didn't we just get rid of a guy like that? I mean he's taller than Tim, but still. Plus he's 35 once the season gets going. I just think we're better off exploring other S&T options. Plus we can dangle our 25 or 31 unprotected first in a deal. As well as Hardy (plus Green and Maxi but meh). Sign DJJ (assuming he's willing to accept the full MLE), and wait to see what other players are available.
At Clay's cost, age and does he fill our #1 need a big 3D wing that can be part of our Big 3??? Move PJ & resign DJ that locks down our small forward spot just like Liv and Gafford lock down our center. So a starter at power forward jumps out as our priority, IMO LM from Jazz, Ingram from Pelicans, maybe double pick up of Grant and Tybile from Trailblazers. Then another solid back up point guard. Based on above to get our #1 need we won't be able to keep all of the following. Green, Hardy, Exum, Maxi, Powell, OMax, Powell & Morris. Would love to keep Hardy and Omax if possible. Grimes was a great pickup to get off THJ contract. I would love to see our top 8 next year be Luka, Irving, PJ, LM, Liv starting 5 with Gafford, Grimes, Hardy & OMax and a backup point guard to run second unit. Clay for DJ and Exum I'd take in a second. Morris and Powell move em on. We need our locker room leaders to be Irving and Luka not a cheerleader on the bench making millions that give you zero productivity off the bench, give those mins to OMax, Lawson or our other developing young players. Go get LM, Clay & quality backup point Guard. Would love to have got Curiso but Thunder did a great job to get him for Giddy. LM fills our number 1 need.

He would be the best 6 man in the league.. in his worst season in a long time he still averaged 18 points on almost 50% shooting. He also shot 38% on the season from 3 on 9 attempts a game 🤷🏼♂️ that is so much better than Hardaway, and the Mavs will need to replace his scoring

We need true 3-and-D wings, not just 3's.

At this point I'd prefer DJJ over Klay because Jones is their best point of attack defender, and I don't see any way that the Mavs could sign both.

Some of the Mav’s fans here In this comments section clearly haven’t watched Klay play recently. The guy looks to be on his last legs and is OLD. He most recently went 0-10 in a must-win game and his defense is no longer good…not what I’m looking for.

While I completely understand this, he also was asked to do what he had been doing for the warriors his whole career. He’s not that guy anymore. But, you can’t tell me Klay can’t sit in the corner and hit open 3’s consistently in this offense. Klay shot 39% from 3 last year. If we had that this year, we maybe are celebrating a championship.
He would elevate our offense to an elite level off his name alone, what I’m most worried about is his defense. But, with us asking him to do much less offensively and putting him in good positions to where he doesn’t have to expend a lot of energy, I feel confident that he could be a solid defender for 2 more years possibly. It’s definitely a big gamble though.
I don’t think you’ve watched him play much recently. He’s no longer able to hold up on the perimeter like he used to (so would be a terrible replacement for what djj does on that end), but he’s got stronger and can do well in the post still. Offensively he’s still really good, just obviously not close to his prime, but this is a guy who in his prime consistently averaged over 20ppg on a team with Steph curry and Kevin durant so comparing him to that is just unfair. That 0/10 game was terrible but was not a good representation of how good he still is, and the whole season was unstable with him being asked to do too much, being moved to the bench, then back to the starting lineup, then back and forth, plus he was clearly looking for a contract so forced some bad shots he never normally takes
But in the Warriors offense they’re supposed to just keep shooting no matter how they’re playing. In a more static offense like Dallas, he’s going to get open looks and options to come in closer to the basket for higher percentage shots. If he could accept that he’s not as good as three-point shooter as he used to be, you could see his shooting become much more effective as he mixes in mid range shots with the long distance ones. It’s really not available to him in GSW‘s offense.
He would automatically be our best shooter on our team.
No way! I would go after DeAndre Hunter of the Atlanta Hawks before Klay. He’s younger, more athletic, can create off the dribble a lil bit, and is better defensively.

People seem to keep forgetting that just last season Klay lead the league in threes (301, career high). This year he wasn't quite as good but still 39% on threes and 93% from the line. Mavs could use some more shooting. Still I get why people aren't sure about him due to losing a step from age/injuries. Ideally Luka/Kyrie are by far the worst two defenders in the rotation. Surround them with good defenders if possible. But. And I'm arguing with myself here it seems, the Mavs lost in the Finals not due to bad defense but because they couldn't score enough. Mavs need shooters.
A few CBA clarifications:
- GSW can send Klay in a S&T if they are going to operate under the 2nd apron
- S&T hard caps Mavs at 1st apron. MLE is still available to 1st apron teams
- conclusions, it is possible to sign both Klay and DJJ

It’s not a leverage play. We clearly need confident shooters around Luka. Wether they make or miss, get the shot up. Klay does that
The Klay talk sounds like leverage. If he comes he will have to take a pay cut. The money aspect makes it difficult for Klay and DJJ

Mavs need to sign both Klay and DJ or only DJ. Or DJ and Grant.
The last thing this team needs is an inconsistent at best shooter (which is what Klay is at this point in his career) who is a negative in almost every other phase of the game. Losing DJJ and adding Klay would be a catastrophic mistake.
I would be ecstatic if somehow they can bring in Klay from free agency!! It would be so awesome. I don't care if it's older, he can still play. I believe in it. This could be the first time we are able to get a big fish like Klay..hes a big enough fish

If he’s right, klay is NOT worth 3 years/20mill. He doesn’t move the needle and we’d be stuck with a bad contract.
I think Klay’s days as a great three-point shooter are over but he could still be good enough to be effective and if he added in some 15th 20 foot jump shots he can keep his shooting percentage up at an efficient level. I agree with you that the Warriors offense is bad for his shooting numbers because you’re supposed to make quick decisions about pass pass or shoot instead of an offense or you have a more stationary role and are going to get the ball in a good position from Luka or Kyrie.
I would prefer KCP because she’s a defender and I’m pretty good three-point shooter and has some ability to create for himself but if he can accept his role in the offense, Thompson would clearly be the more impactful player.
Its not just his skills for those saying no. Its his experience and knowledge of high level championship plays. Bro is a 4x champion. Hes seen some things. Im for it.
I would love both of them on the mavs. A 3rd option Klay would be really good. He’d get way more open 3s, take way less iso scoring than he did at golden state. The only thing I’d be worried about is that defense.

Because they MISSED too many open looks in the Finals. Defenders can't leave Klay which will allow Luka and Kyrie more freedom.

Every time the Mavs bring an old vet that looks that can contribute he looks washed AF and later on the Mavs need to send picks to get rid of them or waive and pay with the cap. People need to learn, high risk low reward is not worth it.

Klay’s offensive for sure could offset the defense, but having defense (DJJ) is more of a constant and won’t get cold. Higher peaks and lower valleys - is that worth the $$? 🤷
I would love to have Klay but I hate to help out GSW because we had have interest in KCP but Denver is unwilling to do a sign-n-trade…can’t see him at OKC,Philly,Lakers still have work to do to get him as well…he said he wants to stay in the west and DJJ will have his contract as soon as free agency kicks off

@@Rzurkai moving around a few players that were almost unplayable in the finals is far from blowing it up. The mavericks aren’t winning a chip more than likely as currently constructed. Shooting and having a third scorer/reliable shooting was obviously an issue. You’re adding that with Klay and it cost much less than Maxi/tims salaries last season. If they can offload Josh green and Maxi, they can probably keep their core 6 guys and add Klay. With Grimes, there is no need for Josh Green and there is no need for Maxi at all.

Plus he's 35 once the season gets going. I just think we're better off exploring other S&T options. Plus we can dangle our 25 or 31 unprotected first in a deal. As well as Hardy (plus Green and Maxi but meh).
Sign DJJ (assuming he's willing to accept the full MLE), and wait to see what other players are available.

At Clay's cost, age and does he fill our #1 need a big 3D wing that can be part of our Big 3??? Move PJ & resign DJ that locks down our small forward spot just like Liv and Gafford lock down our center. So a starter at power forward jumps out as our priority, IMO LM from Jazz, Ingram from Pelicans, maybe double pick up of Grant and Tybile from Trailblazers. Then another solid back up point guard. Based on above to get our #1 need we won't be able to keep all of the following. Green, Hardy, Exum, Maxi, Powell, OMax, Powell & Morris. Would love to keep Hardy and Omax if possible. Grimes was a great pickup to get off THJ contract. I would love to see our top 8 next year be Luka, Irving, PJ, LM, Liv starting 5 with Gafford, Grimes, Hardy & OMax and a backup point guard to run second unit. Clay for DJ and Exum I'd take in a second. Morris and Powell move em on. We need our locker room leaders to be Irving and Luka not a cheerleader on the bench making millions that give you zero productivity off the bench, give those mins to OMax, Lawson or our other developing young players. Go get LM, Clay & quality backup point Guard. Would love to have got Curiso but Thunder did a great job to get him for Giddy. LM fills our number 1 need.

To all the people saying the Klay is cooked.. this is super true as a secondary option! But, if he fills the 6 man spot? He would be the best 6 man in the league.. in his worst season in a long time he still averaged 18 points on almost 50% shooting. He also shot 38% on the season from 3 on 9 attempts a game 🤷🏼♂️ that is so much better than Hardaway, and the Mavs will need to replace his scoring

I think the real problem is Klay wanting more money than he is valued. Maybe he wants 30 mill per year. But were talking about mle or maybe just over 20, and thats pushing it. If we sign him with the latter then hes worth it. If its the former then thats an L. BIG L

Why are we going after Klay? Seriously why? Bucks was reportedly getting Wiggins for washed Brook Lopez. We have Green+Maxi. Why not take on the compensation pick/player and Wiggins instead of Klay? GSW will want to open space for PG anyways.
If you ask me who would you bank on 34 yo bad athlete, bad ego, shot chucker Klay or off court problems Wiggins, i pick Wiggins. Wigs had a good second half of the season and will cost really cheap plus most likely you’ll get srps or frp or someone okay with it.

Exactly. Anyone who knows anything understands that the mavericks problem above all else was scoring outside of Luka. The guys get spoon fed but still can’t hit the ocean from the beach. Klay would be playing with 1 of the 2 best guys in the world at getting shooters open looks where they don’t have to do anything else. I don’t really see how it wouldn’t help to have Klay.
If PJ hit half of the 3's he attempted in the playoffs we would have had a parade in Dallas. Now imagine Klay with those looks in the playoffs. Not Klay that's being asked to be a superstar every night in golden state, I'm talking 3rd option catch & shoot Klay in Dallas.
