  • One full-time year of canoe building condensed into eight minutes. I built this canoe for a 1500km solo expedition up Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, surviving completely off the land and sea. You can buy the book about it here;

      They usually burned/charred away the wood they wanted to remove, only the finishing touches was done by hand with tools. Stone tools wittle at wood pretty good, and I do not mean sharp flint but to the layman's eye would look blunt and ineffective for the task. Just to give an example a stone axe (they don't look like they could compare at all to iron axes) requires about 3 times the swings to do the same task iron axe would. So it's not terribly difficult.

    I tried doing this forty plus years ago.
    I found this perfect cottonwood log, already dry.
    I used an antique adze and used fire to my advantage when I could.
    It weighed a ton !
    I finally got it into a local pond and jumped in.
    I had evidently made it off center.
    It got accidentally burned in a brush fire.
    No loss.
