Echoes of Sita

The stories we hear as children capture our imagination and subtly shape our value systems. They also frame our expectation of who has agency, voice and safety.
With a Rama bhajan as backdrop, we present vignettes from Sita’s journey of survival
in the Ramayana as examples of the confounding and impossible patriarchal standards placed upon her by society. Sita’s stories continue to play out even today, disproportionately impacting women from marginalized communities, and LGBTQAI+ individuals.
Gender-based violence often goes unreported, ignored or is considered par for the course. Even when an incident garners public attention, it is often mired in recrimination rather than prioritizing the needs of the survivor.
‘Echoes of Sita’ was created with the intention of challenging dominant narratives and centering the voice of the survivor. Much work lies ahead in creating equity and safety in the spaces we live and work.
This piece was inspired by Volga’s intrepid reimagining of the stories from the Ramayana in ‘The Liberation of Sita’.
