I live in a Canadian city and only have access to a local community garden. For the last 3 years I've been able to grow enough potatoes to last me and my wife through the winter and still have enough to replant in the spring. Our plot is 15x30. Not to mention squash/beets, beans, tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, and fesh greens.
Now that’s what I’m talking about!
Just plant, and don’t overthink anything. Nature is a beautiful thing
That’s what I’m talking about!
Last year I ran out of space in raised gardens and threw the rest of my potatoes, literally, on the ground, no soil, just rocky mess. I threw hay on top, and ended up with soooooo many pounds of potatoes by end of September (living in north east Pa. ).
Now that’s my kind of gardening!
❤❤❤that is a sweet Great Pyrenees! Thank for this video! I just planted potatoes & ginger!
That is awesome!
My family finished planting a few pounds of drought-tolerant bambara groundnuts a few days ago. Not sure why i dont see anyone in the USA talking about growing this plant on UA-cam. Bambara groundnut is a "complete food" that people seriously interested in food security should be growing. And unlike most other rootcrops that tend to deplete the soil of nutrients, the bambara groundnut plant will pump nitrogen into your soil. Intercrop it with your other garden crops. A small family with enough space to plant 40 pounds of bambara groundnuts will have enough food to last a year and have seeds for the following year. Shalom
I’ll have to look into that one! Sounds like a winner.
Never even heard of it.
We hung the flag upside down how many years ago now? God has blessed us with US with so much time. God be praised.
Billy, if he lacks you it's because he loves you brother!!!!!!!
Amen to that, my friend!
The soil looks so good! My ground is gravel and clay.
Check out animal impact as Gabe Brown uses to build soil. Billy uses chickens, sheep to harvest forages and fetilize soil OR does compost piles to improve soil.
Joel Salatin discusses how Polyface use to be rocks and gullies. They grew soil with animal impact.
Keep working at it! You can turn it around.
Compost everything! ❤ I am right there with you all. Thank you for sharing your information. 😊
Most of my weeds go to the chickens as they don't get out of the pen (hawks). What is left over makes it to compost (except any Bermuda Grass) I have about 50 to 60 potatoes and will have sweet potatoes and white yams later. I can 50 quarts of green beans and freeze sweet corn. Due to lack of space I just buy dried beans and rice, but you can only do so much with a 30 x 100 ft garden. God bless y'all and keep growing!
I am really appreciative of all of your time and effort educating us about root crops! I certainly need it!
Thank you so much for the vote of confidence, my friend!
Milk Boi's "Perma Pastures Farm" show, co-starring Billy and Michelle!
He’s definitely the lead singer!
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 LOL!
Wishing you a huge potato harvest in the future.😊
What variety of potatoes were they?
In north central PA, we like Yukon Gold, red potatoes, and for color-BLUE potatoes, when we can get them.
There were at least four different varieties there, Rick. I wish I could remember them all.
When discussing the design of a cabin dream, a friend said "why do you need a root cellar".. yikes..
Hi Billy ! Hey have you done or could you do a video on some specific variety of crops that store really long ? Thanks for all you do ! God bless!!
I’m pretty sure we’ve done that in the past, but I’ll see if we can do it again.
Thanks for the info! I feel recharged to go out and plant more potatoes and onions
You can do it!
Milk Boie is so sweet!
It looks like you have one of his cousins!
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 We have 2!
Thanks Billy. Good info. Usually do well with potatoes and need to get better with onions. Have yet to get good bulb formation. Looking to build a better larder in the basement.
it sounds like you’re on the right track, my friend!
Hatching out Breese chicks next month. Limited supply. Straight run. $8 each right now. North Augusta SC area. Free chicks to the PIMP.
That doggo looks to have such a great character.
And William’s content is awesome packed with great information, i love it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks, Billy! You and the fam rock. Our local invader is ripgut brome. Super high in silica, terrible for dogs and livestock. Springs the time for loose soils and preppung the land for its true potential! Stoked to see everyone out happy ready for some good good food.
That’s what I’m talking about!
My focus is on cabbage this year.
Me too 😊
I definitely love cabbage!
thank you so much, love you guys
Right on thank you bro! I was scopin' that shirt for sure 🤠
More stuff I needed to hear...🙏🙏
Cassava is going into the ground this week!!
You can make some really excellent flour out of it also!
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 we do also starch I have celiac disease
Yes I just planted potatoes -- 4 rows and now it's raining!!! I'll have to find some cover for them though.
I've got carrots started indoors in egg cartons -- have to go to the Columbia river and get some nutrient rich sand for them.
Too early for planting anything more outside although I've seeded sunflowers under a black tarp see if they'll germinate
Thank you for the video ... very informative
Thank you! It sounds like you’re off and running yourself!
Great show. Good ol Milk Boy!
He says to tell you thanks!
Billy my wife and I love your posts. Please keep posting!!!!!
Question:
Do you have much experience growing your own mushrooms? I've gotten interested in this topic. Any suggestions?
Thank you!
Billy - When may I divide & propagate my comfrey I planted from you 18 months ago? I'm in zone 8b. It is growing now. Leaves are about 12" long. May I do that now, or wait a bit?
Also, I purchased the Agenda, Agenda II documentaries and their books. I believe it was at your recommendation from your PIMPcast. Can't wait to be educated by those.
You could definitely divide it right now, my friend!
How do you store root crops and cabbages?
Typically in a root cellar.
Wooden box with gaps for air flow. Alternate with straw, potatoes straw. Can keep in basement. Or garage. Keep light away. Just my 2 cents.
@Billy, do you have any idea what rootstock most Arkansas Black is grafted to if any? I ask because I bought one from Walmart 'death row' a few years ago, bu I planted it in a bad spot too close to the well. Sadly, I couldn't dig it up to move it (cut it instead) because it made some serious roots in just a couple of years. One shoot that I assume was from root stock was so persistent in the prior spot, I finally dug it out and planted it in a mineral tub and it's now a 4+' tall sapling. Planning to put in in the food forest, but have no idea what "it" is now. Any thoughts? Much appreciated! Oh and, y'all really should grow more horseradish.
It’s hard to say my friend, but if I had to guess I would suspect M111 rootstock.
dog stole the show
Do y'all sell your comfrey???? I need it for medicinal purposes.
Billy, have I told you how much my dog.l9ves comfrey? Every time he walks by it, he takes a.bite.
Your dog must know that it’s an excellent dynamic accumulator
