Here's my analysis of the videos in the series up to now, in chronological order: *1. protected craters:* This video was created right after Horizon was built, as Horizon wasn't surrounded by the later built architecture. It shows a rectangular black spot which would be explained later in LSR-926-5/92 as the Shackleton Anomaly. This video was made in between 1977 with Orion-Pathfinder 2 touching down and discovering the anomaly and 1992, when LSR-926-5/92 was made containing the additional bases surrounding Horizon. *2. LSR-926-5/92:* This video is a summarization of the previous events, making it the most informative overall in the series. It was made in 1992 by the Lunar Security Bureau (LSB). In 1977, the Orion-Pathfinder 2 mission touched down in Shackleton crater and discovers the anomaly, where radar altitudes can't be obtained. Horizon was established to study the anomaly, and it's later revealed that the planet Janus was responsible for the abnormal amounts of ice in Shackleton with it being "teleported" to there, and the US used it to expand the lunar economy. The video ends with notes from the LSB recommending further fortification of defenses in Shackleton, as Soviet advances in the north pole has been concerning and warns of the repeat of the "1991 Mare Cognitum incident". Notice how the video uses the term "Soviet" in the year 1992 which could only mean the Soviet Union hadn't collapsed in 1991 like the real world, likely due to some political changes in the timeline. *3. LOSS OF SIGNAL (this video):* This video was filmed during the initial attack by hostile (most likely Soviet) forces during the Shackleton Disaster, it shows the Shackleton infrastructure damaged, with Horizon completely destroyed. The only elements of the status list which weren't shown in the map are OLPGs 1 to 3, I assume these are the orbital defense satellites which were shown in LSR-926-5/92. Then, the Lunar Point Squadron (LPS) ships 1 to 3 are pinged, with only LPS-3 being responsive and we get a video feed of it. We see LPS-3 spinning out of control and then loss of signal (likely due to the ground cameras being destroyed). *4. THE SHACKLETON DISASTER:* This is a summary of the Shackleton Disaster after LOSS OF SIGNAL. It shows the hostile squadron consisting of 4 Oscar gunships and 3 Olympic silocraft attacking Shackleton and surrounding craters in 7/21/1997 at UTC 20:11. Lunar Point Squadron (LPS) retaliates and begins the battle, then DSS squadron is called with nuclear intervention authorized. After that the video ends on a cliffhanger in 7/23/1997 with the first extrasolar battle (extrasolar meaning outside of the solar system), with US forces following the Soviets through the anomaly to Janus.
@@matmax500 they’re just the NATO designations, it’s like an unofficial name given by the US and its allies to help identify ships, every Soviet ship class has one
In this timeline, the "Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies" (aka the Outer Space Treaty) was clearly never put into effect, which means no UNOOSA, nor COPUOS. It also means none of the UN laws established that are based on the Treaty were passed. Also the "Orion" prefix attached to the Pathfinder mission, the existence of a lunar nuclear test range, and the use of nuclear rocketry implies that the 1963 Partial Test Ban Treaty was also never ratified. (Project Orion dealt with experimentation and development of nuclear propulsion for spacecraft.)
I would love to see a video about the USSR’s strike fleets. Something like a “threat assessment” that describes the ship types and their capabilities. I understand this might not be possible due to the careful world building balance at stake, but I’d love to see something about the Olympus or Oscar class ships. Great series so far, I love it!
This is really interesting. My understanding is that Horizon (the main US base on the moon and the location of the anomaly that appears to be some kind of portal) was destroyed in the Shackleton Disaster, but it looks like there's still survivors and facilities still operational, both on the moon and Janus. It's unclear if the anomaly was also destroyed with Horizon. What's strange is why the Shackleton Disaster called the 'disaster' and not 'conflict'. There was no accident involved. Is the conflict being covered up? Is it called Disaster because the conflict destroyed the anomaly, thus bringing disaster to all parties involved, like a metaphor or something? This series is off to such a brilliant start. Everything's really really pretty, the sound is awesome. This is cool.
The Shackleton Disaster is probably being referred as such due to it being a operational disaster with failures on multiple levels. With the EW systems not giving nearly enough warning to mount a cohesive defense which lead to the destruction of the LPS attached to Horizon LSS, Horizon LSS itself and its personnel, those are significant loses in high-value personnel and assets not counting the subsequent loss of a second LPS part of the QRF and the loss of communication with base Hecate which is for all intents and purposes cut-off and under siege.
@@m5w5 It also mentions the remains of Horizon being breached, with the depiction of an attacker passing through the lunar surface into where the anomaly should be.
I just burned through the whole series after being recommended the Shackleton Disaster video out of nowhere. This is phenomenal work and I cannot wait to see where this goes.
This is just incredible. It's everything I never knew I wanted, a continued Cold War on the moon with realistic physics, orbits, and spacecraft. Please keep making these.
L5Resident has similar content. And if you are interested in orbital warfare, try Children of a Dead Earth. This is not to undermine this channel - we simply need more of this, and to bring out the beauty of what could be the actual space engagements in the nearest future.
Personally, I don't understand the fascination around the Orion drive at all - would much prefer a more elegant solution than that. But I couldn't agree more on the state of this budding genre. Although, it doesn't need to necessarily be "Cold War in space" - just need to have proper orbital mechanics and reasonable engagement ranges and velocities, plausible nearest future technology coupled with designs making sense. Something like CoaDE, but more elaborate.
It has a similar silhouette to those American fighters in the Shackleton disaster so I think we might be looking at LPS-3, also, LPS-3 is a squadron (I think, judging from the text) so there’d be 3 ships if we assume it’s the same squadron as in the Shackleton disaster
I like the lower resolution/fidelity of the spinning ship, it was a little too easy to tell before that the ships were from KSP / similar. Its a good improvement that fits with the rest of the atmosphere.
Dude make more of this! This series is your chance to make it big on here! You've got a unique idea, a cool style, and an interesting plot! This is your chance!
THANK GOD, I saw this once and forgot to save so I had to search my ENTIRE watch history. My disappointment in my self has been replaced with complete relief.

Great comment man, I’ve been waiting a while to see a full analysis of the series.
Pretty sure the soviets breach the anomaly, and US forces present on Janus are fighting under siege
Wonder why the presumably Soviet ships have English names.

Maybe the anomaly itself was damaged in the attack, causing it to become unstable and making lunar space hazardous?

Were we looking at LPS-3 from an external view, or we were looking at LPS-3's gun camera and seeing a Soviet fighter?

These spacecraft look so very similar to the ones from "The last starfighter" and I love it
Absolutely amazing series! This quality of content is undeserved for a channel this size.
I’m enthralled by this.
Until that status reads Unresponsive that pilot is still fighting. For Shackleton.
Amazing as always! It looks like LPS-3 have lost attitude control or is it just maneuvering?

this is so awesome

This is a really cool series u got goin on here, can't wait to see how it develops

This is cool. The only problem is how were the Soviets able to procure a space fleet without the funding disappearing into someone’s slush fund?
The real question is how did US was able to build a space fleet without the funding dissapearing into someone's slush fund
