It’s definitely in fantastic shape! I’ve never heard of those old style pumps being prone to issues, but then again I’ve owned very few direct drives. One thing to note, while you remove the suspension springs, it may be worth replacing the motor counterbalance spring on the back, However it’s probably not an imminent problem. Too bad you’re in Indiana, otherwise I’d totally be willing to help with rebuilding parts of the machine such as the transmission that you take out of this one. Stay safe with the weather out there too. The suburbs I live in didn’t get any snow, but I imagine northern indians probably got hit pretty bad. Nice video and glad you got your hands on this!
I actually ordered a new counter balance spring. Those are cheap and super easy to replace. I’ll also be replacing the mounting brackets that hole the springs in place.
Will be interesting to see your progress and you’ll keep us posted. I also purchased a 24 inch Kenmore in pristine condition. I cleaned it, change the pump all the hoses it runs beautifully. I must say the same thing happens. It will slip out of neutral drain if it’s cold once it has warmed up, then no problem at all. I hear this is a common issue with the direct drives.
Most definitely. Today I will be focusing on removal of the wash basket so I can do a deep clean. Next week, I'll be replacing the gearcase with a brand new genuine Whirlpool one, motor coupler, and drive basket.
That washer is by far the cleanest washer I have ever seen. I have to give you props for keeping the legacy of direct drives going because these machines are my most favorite. I grew up with direct drives because of the sound these machines make during their neutral drain cycles and their agitation during the wash cycle. UA-cam will remind me of a new upload by you that I will always keep watching.
@@MatthewJames-st5wv You're welcome Matthew and I'm sorry for disrespecting you. Are we still friends? Your washers are too adorable. I wish I met them in person to give them a big hug.
Aside from the yellowed control panel, the machine appears to be in excellent condition. The spin basket looks to be in immaculate shape even before cleaning. I wasn't aware the older pumps were prone to failing. That's definitely the original pump. I would assume the 2nd rinse would function if you manually set the timer to the 2nd rinse section. I guess the normal cycle is supposed to be energy saving though it doesn't make much sense to me considering it does the exact same thing as Ultra Clean aside from only cold rinses and no ATC. Permanent Press should be the cycle to only offer a cold rinse as a warm rinse would defeat the purpose of the cool down. Not really surprising the neutral drain isn't working correctly. Those are notorious for failing. I would highly suggest you keep a few neutral drain kits on hand for these transmissions. Hang dry makes sense for items you don't put in the dryer since the slow spin will reduce wrinkling. I would use it for lightweight items such as sheets that don't retain much moisture. Great find Matthew! I'm sure this machine will last many many years with the way you take care of them.
Hey there! Today was quite the day for this machine. I spent all morning (started at 7am) and finished around 11 removing the spin basket and thoroughly cleaning it. While I was at it, I removed the transmission and drive basket assembly. I replaced the suspension and the end caps on the control panel (they're still kind of yellowed, but not as bad). I'm going to replace the drive basket just so it's new, even though the current brake works well. I am also awaiting a brand new Whirlpool gearcase, so that will resolve the neutral drain and any other issues that may arise. I am not going to get rid of the transmission, as I do eventually want to replace the neutral drain it. It's just very, very time consuming. I'll probably do it this summer when I can do it outside.
@@MatthewJames-st5wv Neutral drain kit replacement is kind of a pain because you have to open the transmission. I've read that new transmissions from Whirlpool aren't the best quality due to the worn down tooling so I hope it lasts you a while.
@@andrewg593 Well tbh, I was told the same two years ago and convinced to buy a rebuilt transmission and it ended up leaking. I’ll take my chances with a brand new one.
Glad you were able to clean it. Two things: I am not having anymore problems with SQ bypassing, must have been the switch itself not the bypass. And do you know why when I hit the start/pause button instead of pausing it just jumps directly to the next portion of the cycle (if it was on wash it would go to intermediate spin) instead of pausing? it has only recently just started doing this.
Friday I will be replacing the transmission, brake, tub seal, and skate plate. So this baby will be like new. I can't wait. My buddy is assisting me. And that damn SQ. I can't wait to list mine up for sale.
@@MatthewJames-st5wv Yeah every time I stand there and watch the SQ I have mixed feelings, and sometimes I want to keep it. IDK anymore, the machine is good I just have a bit of a bias against the company because while they helped with one thing, they were really no help, because turns out the 7 year "warranty" is literally just a 3rd party insurance policy SQ uses.

Any plans on the Whirlpool version of the Direct Drive washing machine?
I'm thinking about it, but right now putting everything into this one. The plan is to have it fully rebuilt by this weekend.
Nice Kennore
Thank you, Jayden.
I always liked these white faced kenmore's with the older style mid 90s control panel.
If you still have this machine, could you do the normal cycle (the cycle where it only does cold rinses) on a 10 min wash on heavy duty speed.
I am in the process of rebuilding it but I most definitely will once it’s done
@@MatthewJames-st5wv okay!
Does this washer have a smaller cubic foot measure on the tub? It just looks a little smaller that what I'm used to seeing on washers like this.
I believe it's the exact same as my previous machines. I could be wrong though, maybe someone could chime in.
