Carving a grotesque mask in wood

Carving a grotesque mask in Lime wood. The design is based on a mask found on the Fountain of the Four Seasons, rue de Grenelle, Paris. My mask is carved from a photo and I had to do some changes to fit its purpose. It has been made somewhat smaler and I also had to flatten it, holding back the thickness since my one was to be placed on the base of a pilaster and I didn´t want it to stick out to much from the background.
After the carving it has been gilded and finally attached to the wooden marbleized and gilded pilaster.

A stunning piece of work, but all that carving into wood then covered in either gold leaf or paint! I prefer the natural look before the gold.

disagree, i was stunned by the gilding effect and it brings out the 3 dimensional traits. Also you would not put wood finish on marble.
