You just have to *pray* for calm seas. I made this journey in late September 2022, and a horrible wind storm blew on us. We were seasick and vomiting, as was most of the other passengers, through the whole night.
@@nursejanainholland1978 Yep. After chundering almost all the way from Patras, Greece to Brindisi, Italy on a first trip through Europe, I learned that aircraft might be a bit cramped but they are a lot more civilized method of crossing stormy seas! 😱🙄😬
Great video - thanks for giving me another option for travel between London and The Netherlands. In 2020 I travelled by train from London to Vladivostok (East coast of Russia) via the nordic countries. This involved a ferry between Stockholm and Helsinki. I was very impressed by the overnight ferry. I had a simple single room overlooking the central atrium. The room included a good en-suite bathroom and I pre-purchased a nice evening meal as well as breakfast in a restaurant. Even choosing these slightly more expensive options the price was very reasonable for my budget backpacker type holiday.
I went the opposite way with train travel from Amsterdam to the Hook of Holland, Stena Line over to Harwich, England and then the train into London. I stayed in an internal cabin as I arrived in the nightime and left it in the early morning - no need for a window. It was about $120 Cdn in 2018 and much cheaper than a hotel/B and B for just one night and it included travel. It was so very peaceful and easy of a trip - I would highly recommend it.
Reminded me of our sailing from North Sydney, Nova Scotia, to Argentia, NL, this past summer. A very similar ferry, although we had a less expensive cabin. A wonderful way to stretch the travel dollar by getting accomodations included in the trip.
I’ve done SailRail from Manchester to Dublin and across the Irish Sea from Holyhead in my 22 years living here when visiting family in Ireland - changing trains at Chester is a real hassle though
Your excellent travelog certainly evoked happy memories. As an American graduate student I made the trip in the opposite direction over a half century ago. Things were less luxurious then, tho I did travel 1st class from Harwich to London. As the North Sea was remarkably calm, and it was the daytime crossing, I spent most of the time on deck savoring the thrill of my first ocean travel -- but it was a treat to be able to get a pint and snacks on the ferry. I look forward eagerly to your impressions of Holland. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did !
Assume the ticket no longer included onward journey from Hook, as the town used to to be connected by train to the rest of NL. It was only changed (up/downgraded?) to a Metro a few years ago.
Progress 30 years ago intercity boat train 1 HR 15 London to Harwich (hook continental) non stop Before cheap flights it's how people travelled. With train connects in Holland across the rest of Europe.
No need to buy a ticket for the metro to Rotterdam. Just use your contactless payment card to tap in. This goes for all the public transport in The Netherlands; bus tram metro train.
i mean 90 pounds for rail and sail seems to be pretty comparable price to an eurostar ticket. Altough it is a shame the ns left the rail and sail ticket (but this is also due to the fact that they do not operate the line from hoek van holland to rotterdam anymore. (ridership has increased by a lot since it is a metro line tough (mostly people going to the beach)). And one final thing, if you want to go to utrecht or gouda, it is best to keep sitting in the metro untill you reach rotterdam alexander station. While if you want to go to breda, or roosendaal, it is best to remain untill the rotterdam blaak station.
Well, welcome, but I do hope you managed to venture further than just to Holland (N&S) ... ‼️ The The Netherlands has 10 more Provinces that are well worth a visit too, and quite different from what you experience in Holland - different local cultures, dialects, scenery & food specialties. Be brave and go south to visit beautiful Nth. Brabant, for instance. Or west to visit the oldest (and Roman) Dutch city of beautiful Nijmegen in Gelderland. Or visit Arnhem (site of WW2 Operation Market Garden). Be adventurous🫣!
Would love to see more of the Netherlands but having full time job means we only have a few weeks a year to travel for any decent amount of time. We will be back, thanks for the tips! I am noting them.
Rickety windmills? I’m not sure you know what rickety actually means because the Dutch windmills are anything but. Most of them are in perfect working order, despite being hundreds of years old! Great video though. 👍🏽
why did you buy a paper ticket? you can just tap your creditcard at the gate to check in for the metro. Tap it again at your destination to check out. Same applies to trains
That’s actually didn’t work for us and so thought it was something to do with U.K. cards and it only accepted local cards. We had to get a paper ticket. Good to know thanks

That was just beautiful. Well worth the money. Lovely views. Those flowers are gorgeous. Thanks for taking me along. Please take care of yourself
What a lovely surprise to get a new video. I look forward to see how you enjoyed the flowers.

Thank you...... We felt as if we had been away for the weekend! Gouda and The Kookenhoff gardens.
Lovely! Along with the overnight Ferry! Luxury too!😎
Thanks for watching 😊
That ferry cabin looks amazing. I wish I could stay there.
Vivi en Holanda 1 año. Cuántos recuerdos. Gracias. Saludos👍🌎💖
Oh ja, das ist eine schöne Idee 👍.

Ein tolles Video. Nur ich würde ja dann mit dem Auto fahren 😄.
Thank you ❣️

Thank you that was nice crossing the cabin was wonderful and the price was pretty good I would thought more .
Great value for that cabin and travel.
We agree!
Excellent video, thank you! Myself and my family are going in the summer to the Netherlands

Glad we stirred the memories of your trip.
I love a good train trip!
I have to thank you so much, for this beautiful vídeo! God bless you!👍👏👏🙋🏻♀️❤️🇧🇷❤️🩹
That ferry is HUGE! We do have ferries in the US over lakes and rivers but...they are ANTS compared to this monster! What fun, though!
I am grad it was big as the North Sea can be a rough passage to cross. Luckily it was very smooth on our crossing.
Just to point out, the time in Holland is one hour ahead of the UK so arriving at 8am is really 7am in UK time.
Seemed very civilized and not that expensive... Hope all is well with you guys? :)
Yes it was quite a good price. We are doing ok, still helping care for our family member and juggling many plates but doing ok!
@@MemorySeekers Be sure to look after yourselves as it's never easy when caring for poorly loved ones. Prayers & Best Wishes to you all.
Rotterdam to Amsterdam by train takes just over 1 hour 15 min, or 43 min. by direct Intercity at a slight additional charge.
Hello how are you both love your new vidio very interested going to Holland in amerstan best wishes take care stay safe from Lynn x ❤😅😅
We are fine thank you Lynn, 😊

Ah I see thank you for that. A shame would be an amazing deal now.
We use Stena Lines as well going back to UK during our Europe Holiday. Agree £247 is good value for money. €4.50 fir one ticket. Good price too
Yes you did, remember watching your day crossing 😊

We left that in our hotel in Rotterdam

I had never heard of an overnight ferry before. What a neat idea! Can't wait to see your new adventure!
Departing, Hull, North Shields, etc are night ferries.
I must have been to the Netherlands at least 15 times and have never once flown. Once by Eurostar, the rest by ferry.
