Hey guys, a quick note: This Santa Cruz Limited, as equipped, costs $41,155.
It's nice but too expensive. I think the Ridgeline, Frontier, Tacoma, or Ranger are a better choice.
If you want to save money, go with a Ford Maverick.
lol definitely way too expensive, i can get a ridgeline, taco or frontier for that price
@@fongvang935 right? This is a gen 1 product, and from Hyundai. Rather go with a tried and true Taco or Frontier. Hell, even a Ridgeline.
Anyone who pays $40k+ for a Hyundai needs a MRI of their brain. Something isn’t working up there. Go buy a gently used Benz for less than that. Got my ML350 for $29k and still had the factory warranty. Just smoked a Hyundai a few days ago on the highway. At 133mph in my 5,000 pound SUV, I couldn’t even see him in my mirrors. It’s a sleeper to the max.
I'd much rather the Maverick over this, but it is nice to see them bring this to the table as it may push other companies on mini trucks.
Bought a Santa Cruz Limited about a month ago. I found a dealer who ISN’T marking theirs up $10,000. (Several are). It is the most fun truck I’ve ever owned. I’ve owned Tundra, Tacoma, Chevy Colorado Diesel, Dodge Dakota and others. The gas mileage is decent, not great. I wish the tank held more. I love the sunroof and all the tech. The different looks on the digital console are great. The lane assist and auto distancing are helpful for highway. The turbo gives it an amazing amount of spunk and power. I’m happy with it.
Finally a true truck owner making informed comment with experience to back it up, instead of these know nothing twits complaining about the price and gas mileage.
Appreciate Nathan's level headed approach
Not for me but I’ll never crap on a company for trying new things. Would be boring.
Lol this isnt new. Its been tried for many decades. From the elcamino and ranchero to the subaru baja to all the other bastardized crossbreed cars
Well, new for them. Baja was like over a decade ago and when is the last time we had an el Camino type car in the US? Australia at least got the Maloo.
"new for them" doesnt matter this world has gone crazy but this has been tried soo many times and its never been a success, nothings gonna be different this time.
@@dirtrider88 you might be right, but sometimes things that bombed come back later and work. Everyone ripped on the Aztek for it's styling back in the day, but look at the CRV which is a top seller. Remember when AMC made a 4wd station wagon called the eagle? That bombed too but now that's how Subaru makes it's money. Sometimes failed ideas get a second life, sometimes they bomb again.
Love the discussion! While the Santa Cruz "looks" like a Tucson, they share no body panels, the lights are actually different, the SC has a longer wheelbase, and is longer, wider, and a smidge taller...
Its bigger than i thought it would be..great job as always to keep us informed..cant wait for more..thank you
That’s what she said
@@Cparker8806 well played. Lol
Nice to see Roman and Nathan back together like old times.
When he said Nathan is brining the vehicle I stayed and watched the entire clip, we must always pay homage to the origins
As a Baja owner, the fact the rear seats/mid-gate on the Santa Cruz doesn’t fold down is a huge disappointment.
price is ridiculous. it should be $20k.and i would still choose ford maverick. better looks and much much better MPG.
@@tocreatee3585 Hell, A fully loaded Maverick with AWD and tow package is only $36,000.
@@matts1166 a fully loaded without heated seats or steering wheel... 😂
@@melsangelbard I'll give you the seats, but I've never seen much use for a heated steering wheel.
@@matts1166 I live in NYS and my roommate doesn't have a car so I pretty much drive everywhere ... she loves the heated seats and I love the heated steering wheel... I can't drive with gloves/mittens on and I only have the heat high enough to kill the chill which doesn't help the hands trust me I'm never buying a vehicle without that package
I never buy a vehicle based on hype...but this thing. Perfect for my Florida adventures. Great review!
@@titaniumspecial4207 Better mileage, better price, but not better looking. No comparison imo.
florida adventures? wtf adventures takes a 4 foot bed that you can barely fit jack shit in?
Brings me back to the days when TFL was just Nathan and Roman!
Not a fan of Andrei and Tommy?
Andre and Tommy are excellent also
And the Russian mechanic
Everyone's complaining about the price (and I don't necessarily disagree). But, many are comparing to the Maverick. Well, possibly a BIG part of the price difference is the Santa Cruz build includes American labor and supply costs, the Maverick's "benefits" from Mexican labor and supply costs.
I test drove the Santa Cruz in this same spec. I loved everything about it except the price and the poor gas mileage. At $41K I’ll get a 5.0 F150 single cab short bed.
Yeah I'd rather get a Taco at that price
Can’t go wrong with a F-150; have owned 3 of them & all were solid. 👍🏻🇺🇸
Gets about the same fuel mileage
@@lightman489 yes, and the F150 is a big, full size truck, and bed.
Single cab short beds are cool you can build a race truck especially with the 5.0
Just bought one new off the lots today and I’m already in love
Interesting vehicle. Love the size, looks, interior, hidden trunk, etc.. The Ford Maverick still has my vote for now, primarily because it comes standard as a hybrid. I drive a Honda Accord hybrid and I love it. It's no hotrod, but it's not a Prius either, thankfully! Once you own a vehicle that gets great fuel mileage it's hard to go back to a guzzler.
About the hotrod part I'm sure someone at some point is going to swap in a coyote or LS but for the price I think it's going to be a happy medium between cars and fullsize trucks
I agree, it is nice to have a vehicle that is capable and efficient. The only issue with the Maverick is that you only get the hybrid powertrain in a FWD and you have to jump up to the less efficient 2.0T to get 4WD. For people that are going to use these vehicles as an alternative to a car or small SUV it’s a great option. But definitely not a replacement for a real truck, regardless of the fuel economy
22mpg is good?? I have a F250 Tremor and it is getting 19. Ill take 3 times the space and power for 3 mpg... also, my payload is almost double while be able to actually tow.
@@mblake0420 Price sunk the Hyundai.
Are you going to risk 40-50k on Hyundai making putting in a wet dual clutch, high compression turbo (look at GDI history), 1st generation when they keep emphasizing this product is not a truck. 😂
I could see it now take it back for warranty and the service person says "sir, it's not a truck". 😂
Yea, don't forget the price difference as well. Maverick is nearly half.
You two guys are the best! Honest reviews like always. Just built an SE AWD version for $26,255 (including freight) with a hitch, bed extender, and mudguards. Also built another one with similar features for the Ford Maverick at... $26,255!!!. I will go for the Santa Cruz all the way for the 6.3 0 to 60 (can't wait to see your numbers), a 5000 lb TC, over 1500 lbs of payload, and an unbeatable warranty!
Ford Maverick XLT AWD is $27,000
Which has A LOT more power, Way faster, similar towing, more payload (double the bed payload) more interior space. And a warranty you can actually use
If it is a full loaded limited it should be 1411 payload. If you want the turbo AWD and cooled seats are not a must then the SEL premium is the way to go. Very soft cloth seats. They are not coming with hitches as for now it is a dealer install or aftermarket add on. Love the 2.5T in my wife’s Sorento so had to pick me up a Santa Cruz a little over a week ago. Very sad that the 2.5T out performed my trail hawk with a 5.7 hemi using a lot less gas as well
How much of that payload can you put in the bed? I heard the bed is limited in how much weight it can support
@@ArnoldGLZ That was floating around months ago. But, like the Maverick, any weight that isn't passengers can go in the bed. One driver at 160lbs? 1250 in the bed. That "600lb" figure that was floating around was based on having 5 people sitting inside it ... except somehow that little detail was lost in the media. Alex on Autos reached out to Hyundai for clarification and posted it some weeks back.
@@ChrisPollard oh that’s cool, yeah I was wondering why that figure was so low but it makes sense now
We looked at one today. It had a factory hitch.
@@ChrisPollard in the owners manual it says "The cargo should never exceed 661 Ibs. or 300 kg", says nothing about having five people, just gives an example calculation of 5 150 lb passengers having a remaining capacity of 650 lbs, then has that specific warning after. Seems like regardless of passengers they don't want over 661 lbs in the bed
I love to see that you guys are doing more in-depth reviews on the Santa Cruz, it looks like such a cool enthusiast vehicle. I wonder how much the dual clutch transmission will be an issue off-road and if outfitting proper tires would negate that issue
It won't be a problem. Someone already put that wet dct through the ringer, and it didn't overheat. I can't find the video to post it.
I’m considering one of these in SEL AWD trim with the 2.5 NA. At $31K it offers a ton of value and comes well equipped. I bought a 2020 AWD Kona SEL Plus for $26K. For only $5K more the Santa Cruz offers a lot more use with its bed and towing capability.
That’s what I bought, and I love it. No dual clutch, no obtrusive bed cover, no all-touchscreen console, but still both plush and versatile.
@@k.stacey7389 Have you had a chance to drive it in the snow? I may replace the tires with my trusly Bridgestones. Stock Kia and Hyundai tires have always let me down for winter performance.
Yesterday we picked up our brand new Santa Cruz, looks exactly like the video, same color in Phantom Black. Only it is an SEL AWD, but it has the activity package which includes the tonneau cover. Also the SEL comes with the standard 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine, we didn't want the turbo. The standard engine is marked for oil change and maintenance every 7500 miles, but the turbo is at every 5000 miles. Also we get full complimentary maintenance for the first 3 years/36,000 miles.
It is fun to drive. We had thought about getting a mid-size pick-up truck like a Honda Ridgeline, Toyota Tacoma or a Nissan Frontier, but then realized the Santa Cruz had all the room for everything we needed. When you look at the five foot beds in the standard mid-size pick-up trucks, you realize that the Santa Cruz has almost the same amount of room for hauling most things. As far as color goes, our preference would have been to get either the Sage Gray or Hampton Gray, but beggars can't be choosers. A bird in the hand....these are hard to come by and the waiting lists are getting longer at the dealers. One local dealer got two and they both sold the first week, they will not be getting anymore for at least 2-6 months. Another local dealer had one coming in, the one we got. We had to put 500 bucks down on a credit card over the phone to immediately hold it for us, it came in two days later. That was just luck, being in the right place at the right time. They are getting one more in this week, it is the top of the line like this video, in Sage Gray color. Then they may be going a long time before they get anymore. My advice to anyone wanting one of these, jump on the first opportunity you can get. Also, even though it is a new vehicle, we didn't have any anxieties. Because most of it is based off the tried and proven platform of the Tucson. One more thing, because this is such a popular vehicle, the law of supply and demand kicks in. Most dealers are charging an extra $2K, labeled as a "market adjustment." Basically meaning it is a new hot item and you'll pay the new hot item price for it. We were very fortunate because the huge dealership where we got ours, did not charge that mark up "market adjustment" price. Our Santa Cruz is fun to drive, easy to maneuver and park. My wife loves driving it. Which means.....my wife loves driving it. So, It's our car BUT my wife loves driving it. Happy wife, happy life. I bet I'll get used to driving "our" 2019 KIA Sorento......LOL.....
Nice write up. So, I’m guessing you paid sticker price? Was there any wiggle room at all, from the dealer?
@@clifhellner1493 They were pretty straightforward, not to much wiggle room on these new models. We were fortunate not to get stuck with the "market adjustment" 2K add on that all the other dealers were charging. Our total sales price (not including tax and registration,) was 33,689. We were o.k. with that, this is our 6th Hyundai. We've had 2 Elantras and 3 Sonatas and we love Hyundai's durability and reliability.
Gotcha, thanks. How’s that base engine working out for you? Have enough power?
@@clifhellner1493 Yup all good, no regrets, very comfortable and fun to drive and practical. Rear bed is perfect size for us and has already come in handy. We look forward to owning this for many years. This gives us everything we needed without the huge sticker price of a Toyota Tacoma or Honda Ridgeline.
Nice. Always a good feeling when you’re happy with your purchase. I’m in Charlotte, NC and I’m sure like many other cities, these are simply not available. Last I checked, there were 2, within a 75 mile radius. Kinda crazy. I have a 2011 Tucson, which has been fantastic!
Nothing to do with being old. Knobs are much easier to use while driving without needing to take your eyes off the road since you can easily feel the knob and know which way to turn them. For things you will be changing on the go like a/c and volume, knobs are definitely better, hands down.
Fully agree. "Everything touchscreen" is not easy to do without looking away from the road.
@@tangydiesel1886 Ford actually went that route for a year and they realized it was unsafe and went back to knobs. So there are some Ford models of a specific year that had all touchscreen controls. But I forgot which year now.
After my first oil change my mileage changed for the better! Now 24 city 26 mixed and 34 Hwy flat ground 32 Mountains. 17 to 18 pulling my camper! We Love this little. Swiss Army knife of a vehicle.
Guys, you might want to learn the difference between volts and watts if you’re going to talk about those electrical outlets in the beds of pickups. Hint: they’re almost all 110 volts and the difference is usually the power rating or watts, with the usual amount being around 400.
No actually its 115 to 120 volts and this one is only good for a looks only 150 watts. Still not sure what you could power with that as that translates to about 1.25 amps.
@@jimji2774 you know that 110, 115 and 120 VAC are voltage rating terms that are all used interchangeably when referring to the standard US wall outlet, right?
Wanna tip? If you buy one get the adventure pkg. Comes with the bed cover. If not. It's a $10,300 add on if you want it after you buy it. That's just for parts....not labor. Your welcome
How funny would it have been if the tailgate broke when Nathan sat on it.
It would’ve if it was a chevy
When a local dealership gets the Santa Cruz trucks in stock, I am going to go and test drive one. I really like the look of this vehicle. I would love to have a full size pickup, but my wife and I have on street parking and we live on a narrow street.
I've seen two while I was on the road with my job. I have not seen the Santa Cruz up close yet.
Thank you for the video!
Thank you for saying it's smaller than the Ridgeline I couldn't stand people calling them direct competitors 😂
I agree, if they made this out of a Santa Fe framework then those reviewers would have a point, but alas, it's not...
Thank you TFL for testing these vehicles and keeping manufactures honest. As hot as Hyundai and Kia are with their designs, reliability and build quality will always have the upper hand. I’m happy to wait or look elsewhere until they fix those overheating issues.
Good review. Like this format,
The reality is that this (or the Ridgline)would be perfect for 90% of truck buyers weather we will admit this or not.
Yep, my 2000 Ranger carries ice chests, lawn care equipment, tool boxes, gas cans, generators and stuff too dirty to carry inside of a vehicle 99% of the time in the bed. This is on my list of possible replacements.
I wonder if there will be a parallel version for Kia?
I just got mine last week I love it!!!!
They said 17 city 19 Hwy is that the fuel mileage your getting or are they way off i couldn't imagine a Hyundai getting fuel mileage like a F150
it's a tucson with a bed, considering a limited tucson is in the high 30k I think the price of this is fine
The base model starts at $25k. If it starts $30k, it's due to stealership markups and useless customaccessories. I wouldn't touch it at that price. The only trims I recommend to get is the SEL/Active/Premium trims. Get the SE trim if you're trying to be cheap, or the Limited trim get spoiled by the tech.
I'm in a weird phase right now with the next vehicle I want to buy. I can spend between $35k-$45k but I can't make up my mind between an SEL or Limited Santa Cruz, a Maverick Lariat or a new Silverado 4WD. I either want a truck or something "truckish". The only issue I have with the Santa Cruz is that its price puts it in line with a new Silverado which just seems like so much more for the money. Or, I can spend $5-$10k less and get a fairly loaded Maverick with AWD and the Ecoboost. I want to be able to tow, love the utility of a bed and need 4WD for Nebraska's interesting weather. What do you guys think? Fuel cost and fuel economy are not a concern. And of course after reading the comments on this video there is the new Frontier.
I just bought a one year old 18,000 mile ram with the 5.7 that was 10k less than msrp and it is soooo much better equipped and nicer than the 2018 tacoma i just got out of and it only gets 2mpg less. Just buy a slightly used 3/4 ton
@@dirtrider88 You make a good point. I could always go 1 year old and splurge on an extended factory warranty and still come out ahead.
Loaded maverick with all the fixings is ~$36,000 (excluding FX4 and first edition)
@@devinbender8428 which is more than i paid for a 1 year old ram 1500 that FAR exceeds the santa cruz and the maverick in every way. size, which i consider a plus. capacity. power to weight ratio, in terms of 0-60. interior room, again thats a plus. and forget about the interior quality and features, its not even a comparison. not to mention hes considering a 1/2 ton so might as well make the leap.
Love the video. The quality of casting this on my tv was awesome
I do like the styling. Just wish it had the Tucson Hybrid system. But that new 2.5 turbo is a monster. Hopefully it does great modulation of power, instead of a one wheel peel machine
This is a perfect vehicle for someone who's not a "truck person". But want a "car-like" feel and the capability of a bed to haul home improvement things and sporting equipments like a bike or even a surfboard. It's very stylish and techy. Unlike the Maverick, it's not boring and too utilitarian looking. A working professional person can pulled this thing up to valet or a night out in the city with confidence. The Maverick just screams business fleet truck. Especially, the base model Maverick. As for volume knobs for the " old heads", it is available on the lower trims with the 8 inch infotainment screen.
It looks more utilitarian because it’s functional. There’s a reason why trucks are boxes.
Maverick is less than 4” longer than SC yet has
Aprox 4” longer bed and 3” more combine leg room and a smaller engine bay and 1.5” more rear head room.
They are boxes to optimize space.
And I’m sorry but I’m not paying 15% more for a vehicle simply for “style”
@@devinbender8428 Aah, you again...We all have our preferences. Maverick just wouldn't be it because it looks too much of truck, in my opinion. I might as well buy a Ranger if I qant the utilitarian look. But I like style and tech so the Santa Cruz gravitates to my liking for that reason.

This looks much better than the Maverick, has better design and tech. Tows more, and has a better warranty. I'd take the Santa Cruz any day over the Maverick.
Cannot wait to take it to the race track!
These small pickups are what at least all the pickup that at least 50% of pickup owners need. This style reminds me of the old Cord Ranchero and the chev El-cominoes but with more seating and a smaller box. With these small pickups owners can still go on a picnic, haul grass and gardening but where they shine is you can still put a washer, dryer or refrigerator, move from one rental home to another { so us pickup owners can have a break, lol. The tonoue covers for the pickup bed make these very owner friendly.
At 41k for this, ill wait for the Ford Lightning. At least i can power my house for three days with it. If i

I really like the Santa Cruz.. In my opinion it looks 100x times better than the new Maverick and also more useable with it's nice bed features :)
I’d rather have the full sized spare in the Ford than a small trunk
I think we should adopt the Australian UTE for this the Ridgeline, and the new Maverick.
It is definitely no Australian Ute. This is more a mini CUV with a bed
Also Roman. This has a newer designed wet dual clutch instead of the dry design. And their H trac is pretty good...for a soft roader
Ahhh, $41 grand gets you a F-150 Lightning In Pro trim, base model, with the upgraded Tow package, and Tow technology package, as your only options, and then destination charge, and the crazy thing is after the $7500 rebate and state incentives, you could be 4-5 k cheaper, now you have a real truck, with 485 horsepower, 500+ foot pounds of torque, and 230-250 miles of range per charge, no gasoline bill.
time to load it up to max capacity and see if it overheats climbing a mountain
Nate, you just got one congrats. Just test drove one found the driver seat lacking. Body size I fall into average and the padding was thin and upper shoulder/ back was to narrow, please discuss this with you’re truck as a daily driver thanks for the great show. 😊

I would like this if it was a lot cheaper.
Ford Maverick.
Get the base model starting around $25k.
Well, you will have something that the Maverick don’t have. First, Maverick steel bed will be rusted overtime while Santa Cruz is not cause it is plastic bed. If you drop stones and metals on Maverick, it will dent and functure while Santa Cruz will maybe scratch or nothing at all. You have hidden bed storage, Tonneau Cover from factory while Maverick don’t have. Of course, Maverick has hydbrid while Santa Cruz 8 speed auto. However, I’ll take the 8 speed Santa Cruz vs Maverick hybrid due to it is expensive to fix the hybrid especially Fords quality is not that great.
Seeing how quality has improved vastly for Hyundai vehicles while Ford keeps being, well Ford usual quality I would take the Hyundai anytime before the Ford, even if it costs more.
Hey by a Ford already 2 call backs 3 year 35 and one free Oil change or a Hyundai Santa Cruz with 100k warranty and lifetime Synthetic Oil changes. Your money! Lol
I like it but I think they should have made the back like the old Chevrolet Avalanche that way if you were at the home store and you decided you need a 4x8 sheet of plywood you could maybe get it in the back!
Looking forward to your towing tests and also some proper payload stress testing! Load that thing up with gravel or soil and see how it does!
The high end of these are way too pricey. I'm just angry they aren't doing any of these compact pick-ups with only 2 seats and a longer bed.
a true mini pickup and a 6' box id buy one as a weekend car add a camp shell /topper can sleep in the back ,hitch haul the bikes /atv / jet skis maybe a mini king cab / supercab so a tall driver has leg room . lot of us dont want or have need for 4-5 pass crew /double cab
In my opinion, This is a new market we haven't really seen before. These aren't small pick-ups as much as they are SUT's. I think the Ridgeline, Santa Cruz, and Maverick fall into this category as they are all SUV/Crossover based with a little added utility. The Ranger, Colorado, Canyon are filling the mid-size market.
tacoma and now the new frontier but most are loaded $40k plus but can get a 6.5 box and supercab /king cab /access cab / extended cab
The way he said not like a Ridgeline 😂😂
Fun review, great to see both of you. I wanted to see Nathan hide in the bed of the Santa Cruz. This SAV grows on me the more I see it.
I just came from watching new 2022 Toyota Tundra videos and it just makes this little Korean truck look funny.
The Cruz does look like the Tucson, but it actually is based off the slightly larger Santa Fe SUV. It's no longer classified as a truck by Hyundai, but as an SAV due to the laughable bed capacity of only 660lbs. If you need to haul stuff, look at the Ford Maverick. Twice the bed capacity, almost twice the mpg, and about $4000 cheaper at each trim level.
Thanks Nathan about the golf clubs comment. I wanted to know that.
I want to see this truck (any model) with the AWD package and some all-terrain tires slapped on it vs. an XLT FX4 Maverick also with some all-terrains slapped on it and see how they do on some easy to intermediate dirt roads.
I want the hybrid version to come out already.
small pickup
220+ hp
35+ mpg combined
AWD
that's a game changer even if the beds kinda short.
I am driving the Canadian 2021 Telluride/Palisade. The AWD system is better and I've taken it up steep mountain trails even in the snow. The Santa Cruz probably has the same system.
This pick-up would find itself in a lot of car rental lots for big city millennials to use for home renovation of their crappy loft apartment
hey dude you didnt have to call it crappy ok, am trying
Ehh Idk at my job we rarely keep our full size pickups because want them and usually are only in town on business

Loved my gen1 ridgeline as I was taking family and gear skiing, camping, beach, etc. Was sad when Honda ‘killed’ gen 1 ridge and thought someone else is going to take that concept and refine it…… here it is, as expected!! This clearly is a refined Honda Ridgeline that Honda threw away and realized now that they missed the market.
The payload capacity of the bed is only 600 pounds. They should know this.
I looked at a “sel” yesterday. 30,000 dollar price tag. For the price tag, and for what it is, I actually like it. I guess I would buy one before I bought a Tucson, but I don’t think I would buy one for a primary vehicle, but a secondary vehicle. Drivable for sure but for me it’s kind of like driving a mini van when you don’t have kids. Just the feeling I have.
You can get a similar equipment Ford Maverick XLT with Lux 2.5 hybrid for $26k
On all these small trucks. I would like to know how much weight you can put in the actual box. I heard the Hyundai you can't exceed 600 pounds. Which means you can't even put a four-wheeler on there.
Correct.
Hyundai TOTAL payload 1411lbs
Bed payload 661lbs
Ford Total Payload 1478lbs
Bed payload 1478-driver so ~1300lbs
Double!
I agree with the others….. this, the Maverick the up coming Ram offering and to a lesser extent the Ridgeline are all Ute’s. The Australian market has the right name for these unibody pick-ups.
I agree! I can not justify anything being unibody as a truck, and especially with a 4ft box that is pretty much pointless. People are much better of buying a full SUV or a crossover. Heck I own a Chevy Colorado Crew Cab and I find the 5ft box is limiting to some extent, great for parking but the 6ft box would be nice.
No they are not Utes but mini CUV'S with a bed
I think these small trucks are going to do huge sales there are lots of people who like the utility of a truck but prefer to drive a car or cross over because the truck is to big ... remember when crossovers killed huge numbers of sedan sales ?? Well I think these new mini trucks are going to eat huge sales from other vehicle market sales ... I'm sure in 3 years we will see vehicles like this flooding the streets
Not at the price point of $41k, that's mid to full size territory.

This is exactly what I bought. Super excited to pick it up next week
Why would you ever waste $43,000+ out the door for this?
When you could have got a similar ford maverick for $37,000
@@devinbender8428 i only spent 27k outta door, its much better deal than maverick, no direct injection without port injection, no turbo, no cvt, i think its a win
@@rumesh_lance so what you Got the base model?
Ford maverick Lariat starts at 26k
And it’s not a CVT it’s a ECVT. No belts. Just on gear set. That changes speed based on the electric motor. Oh and it’s dual injected too
@@devinbender8428 Really didn't know that about ECVT, but it's not AWD, if u go with 2.0T then u get direct injection and turbo
@@rumesh_lance I wish Ford would go Dual injection across the board.
But hybrid awd should be coming next year
the Ridgeline is based off of the pilot which is a 3 row vehicle the Santa Cruz and maverick are based on a smaller mid size suv
I test drive one of these a couple days ago. It was a super nice ride. I’m 6’2 and was surprised how nicely I fit in the seat and the leg room I had as I’m all legs. It had decent pick up, the ride height was enjoyable; not half ton height but I did feel higher up than a SUV which probably isn’t true but that’s what it felt like. I’m just torn.. not that I’d be using the box everyday but the Santa’s Cruz bed is almost useless, unless your packing around small stuff. I really eyed it up seeing how you could fit a mountain bike or skis in the bed without spending 2k on attachments/mounts.. and you can’t. With that bed cover in there, no bike will just plop in the back and skis will not even fit in any position unless your packing child skis. I really like the available features and styling of the Santa Cruz ALOT. But, that bed in incredibly small and the lack of 4x4 might be enough to kill my appreciation for this thing. Nissan’s new frontier looks great as well, but the way I’d buy one would actually be more than a Tacoma equipped the way I’d want it. I’d loose out on the Tacoma’s resale value and solid reliability where Nissan’s is heavily questionable since the 90’s. I really want to get on board with the Santa Cruz but seeing that a pair of skis won’t fit anywhere enclosed is really tough, a civic can even keep skis enclosed..
Don't do anything till you see the Maverick in person, tho with Ford it could be late next year.
I've seen the Maverick up close, doesn't stack up in just about every category IMHO.
The Maverick's styling is... and I am being gentle here... quite unattractive (subjective, but in general I find all of Ford's pickups to be the least attractive stylistically compared to all other brands except Nissan, which funnily enough the Maverick looks an awful and in a bad way a lot like the Cube if I'm being honest making it the ugliest of the Ford truck offerings), panel gaps were rather shockingly wide and even uneven i(pre-production, so we'll see), tech is less or not as available depending on feature/price point, interior design is all over the map and generally very low quality in comparison, it's barely smaller than the much better/capable Ranger, tow/load capacities are lesser on paper with less hp/tq, taller bed side so more reach over.
The only advantages the Maverick seems to have are a a hybrid option (which is likely coming to the Santa Cruz since it already exists in Hyundai's line up, and as I see it a hybrid in a 'truck' isn't exactly going to be a major selling point for at least part of the buyer base that would consider the Maverick given it's more working man appeal and seemingly greater need for a lot more daily miles driven), a bit more ground clearance (though if you have seen the multiple off-road test vids now out the Santa Cruz is beyond capable to what expectations were and it's not significantly better on paper than the Hyundai offering), a slightly longer bed (but both can carry full size plywood sheets so really it's scenario specific), and general mileage. And arguably the Maverick will likely have more of an 'after market', though the dealer add-on options appear to actually be pretty well matched overall from what we have seen so far with the Santa Cruz and what Ford is saying about the Maverick, and there is of course the 'rumored' off-road package that will come at some point which should set it further apart in that department from the more urban minded Santa Cruz I would think.
In all other respects... towing, bed load capacity, equipment/features, tech, safety, styling, build quality, performance/handling, and warranty the Santa Cruz has it over the Maverick.
OK... yes, there is the whole pricing thing, but then again you get more for your dollar with the Santa Cruz, but yeah it will hurt Santa Cruz sales in the base sense for sure.
Ultimately I'm tired of the comparos between the two, as natural as it may seem to some... each product is targeting different buyers and needs, but side-by-side the Santa Cruz does have it over the Maverick in many categories.
Neither are 'true' pickups in the classic body on frame sense and are not as off-road capable as true 4x4s in general (though arguably they do well for most people's needs buying this size 'truck', where as there are plenty of off-the-lot pickups that are surprisingly not that great until you get into the higher and more $$$ packages), each will have it's own supporters and core buyer base (and yes, the Maverick fugly as it is will very much outsell the more refined/costly Santa Cruz in the US, no argument there).
In an age of tightening mileage requirements by state and fed, along with all the rumored new 'gas guzzler' taxes being considered for the larger pickups and SUVs, coupled to rising fuel expenses in general I think that the age of big SUV/Pickups being such a dominate sales stat are numbered. There are many owners/buyers who don't need everything their current big SUVs/Pickups do but who got them because 'bigger is better' or other social/cultural/regional reasons. These buyers will likely be looking down market at more efficient and focused vehicles that better match their needs and lifestyles over the next decade... seems that Ford and Hyundai are reading the market tea leaves and getting an early jump on what is likely to be a very active and profitable segment as the market reality morphs to meet the stricter mileage and higher fuel/tax prices likely to impact those spaces.
Personally I want a Santa Cruz, though I looked hard at both. Unfortunately Hyundai really has messed up with the 'reservation' process which so far see's me waving $40K at them and the local volume dealer and not even being able to see one yet after it being on lots for weeks in my part of the country. And with the chip shortage seeing even Hyundai dealers adding market adjustment dollars over and above MSRP I likely won't bother either - I can 'afford it' but why? Normally I would never even pay MSRP on a vehicle, no way I'm going to rush out like a loon and spend another 2 - 5K above sticker as I already have a daily driver Camaro and my offroad FJ at hand, just not in a rush here.
I wish these unibody trucks took advantage of being able to put in a pass through door between the bed and the cabin for long items like surfboards (in addition to fold flat passenger seats)
i like the exterior styling, but the interior is just not rugged enough to be cool. More of a sedan interior. The bed will prove just a little too small for most use.
ridgeline should win in this category but people hate it for some reason

Less than the ford maverick.
Nice to see the three of you together.
Stop treating this like a truck. If you want a truck go buy one.
The santa cruz is a crossover with a small bed. LITERALLY. Straight from the horse's mouth.
Guys, you never heard of/saw a Honda Ridgeline?
Ooops, guess you have. My bad
G1 owner since 2005, 2006 model RTS, one of the first and now a G2 2019 RTL E bought in May 2018. The Ridge blows it away for few more $$$, pay for what you get. Im selling a 2016 CRV and buying one to compare it.
I prefer the Mavericks look over this, the Santa Cruz is too over designed and I like fords more simplistic truck like styling but that’s just my opinion, more importantly I like the Mavericks infotainment and button controls better, no gloss black and no touch buttons.
Hyundai has come a long way, since being introduced in the U.S. market!
Interesting vehicle. Would be cool if the tailgate also swung sideways
Especially with the trunk so you can reach it better.
I like this, do more videos like this.
I just test drove one of these in Ontario. I was quite surprised that I fit with no problem in the drivers seat put back and pretty much all the way down. I am 6’7” and the height comes from my VERY long legs. As for anyone wanting to sit behind me….no way. It is a great vehicle. Not sure what trim it was but it had 18 inch wheels, sunroof, no ventilation seats and no surrounding cameras but it had the digital dashboard and rear camera. It was very sharp looking with a white paint job. No hitch.
Sounds like one of the SEL trims
We got our SEL PREMIUM AND ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! I HAVE UTILITY TRAILER S ! TO DO MY HEAVY DUTY WORK. THAT SAVE S MY TRUCK WHERE AND TARE . IT PULLS MY 18 FOOT SATELLITE CAMPER GREAT AND ITS 3700 LBS. I GOT RID OF MY F 15O SUPER CAB BECAUSE THE SANTA CRUZ DOES IT ALL PLUS GRANDKIDS .
Rear seat back should fold flat and there should be a pass through like a Chevy Avalanche.
To be honest, if you have a decent garage or yard, just get a trailer. Better and lower payload and you can get the SUV you want. As a landscaper, I put all my non-waterproof tools in the vehicle, and tow everything else. Only around $1800 for a 5x8 trailer.
No-one ever mentions that it is hard to see out of the back of this thing. Maybe its just me and being used to my old school pickup but I was disappointed in how small the back window seemed and how hare it was to see where you were backing up. Almost had to just use the cameras. Also liked seeing these two 250 lb guys sitting in that back seat together.
The styling stole the view. A huge blind spot on both back side behind back doors. Huge! Looks over function.
@@michaelbradley2695 The back window also starts awf5ully high so I can't quite see the tailgate without stretching up. I am getting used to the visibility somewhat though as I use it. Rear backup screen is big and useful and I realize many vehicles are going this route these days with it being more all about the styling. This car is just too fun to drive in Sport mode.
I am so glad I bought my Ridgeline. I was going to wait, but the Honda dealership had a levelled Ridgeline in red in the EX-L trim. I have had it for a few months and Nathan,,,, it IS a truck! I have only owned full sized trucks excepting 7, but I have owned well over 200 trucks for my personal, business, and collector use. The Ridgeline is a truck. I have done so many things with the Ridgeline so far and it’s every bit a truck as a Tacoma, Canyon is. The Ranger is stupid tall which leaves it separate.
I drove a new Santa Fe yesterday and priced it out. OMG is it ever expensive!! My Ridgeline has the leather interior and it’s a Canadian trim with the EX-L package that is just below the top of the line Touring model. What I get for the money, other than the dash, the dash on the Santa Fe is definitely nicer, but the rest is small, very small. I’m glad I didn’t wait, they are priced almost the same. Just over $47,000 Canadian dollars. Each!!! The Santa Fe is definitely quick!
The Ranger is stupid tall. As soon as I saw one in person I took it off my list - the lift over into the bed is the same as an F150. My old back, shoulders and knees doesn’t want that extra height.
The ranger is the size of a 90's f150. Stuff has gotten way too big.
@@tangydiesel1886 - it isn’t actually. There’s still a big difference, but it really is too tall for a shorter guy like me to use the box as much as I do.
It sure seems that large just due to the height of the box. The rake is so pronounced. My buddy actually lowered the rear to level the truck out instead of lifting the front. He is really happy with it now. Everyone has their own preference.
“Allows people in the city to have all the advantages of a truck”
No body on frame, no 4WD, no tow hitch. Sounds great…
If they can deliver them (chip shortage) they will sell many, great looking and versatile pickup!
