Why do some places that are small distance of each other have different climate zones. For example Hawaii big Island has more than one climate zone. It can be very rainy on one side of the island and very dry on the other side of the island. Is there a detailed scientific explanation for this?
Both of the previous comments are right - because wind generally blows from one direction (which differs based on where on Earth you are), if you have a piece of land where there are mountains, their will be "rainshadow". The wind brings clouds from one direction and when they have to go above the mountains (where it's cold), it starts raining. The area in front of the mountains and the mountains themselves keep the rain, and the land behind the mountains stays dry. These differences then form "microclimates" - different climatic conditions for small areas. Hope this explains it.
If you live somewhere where the shortest day is only 4 hours its a hell of a lot more in summer than 16 hours. More like 20.London is 16 hours in june and there shortest day is 8 hours.

maybe this is due to the rainshadow effect?
Its called microclimates
