  • Have you heard of it? Maybe you use it? The 17S mounting interface for bipods has been around for a while. Today, Caleb tells us about a few of the nifty things it can do for us. 17S is actually a NATO standard agreement interface for mounting a variety of accessories to firearms - optics, laser sights, tactical lights, and bipods. It's a male-to-female system, and "17S" actually refers to the width and depth of the channel machined into a 17S mount, with holes for clamping the accessory securely to it (more on that later). In civilian use, 17S mounts are mainly used for bipods.
As an example to demo the versatility of a 17S bipod mount, Caleb shows us how an adapter lets you install a 17S bipod on a rifle with a rail for very stable ARCA Swiss mounting system. Just as easily, you can get an adapter to mount the same 17S bipod on a rifle with an M1913 Picatinny rail on the forend / handguard. A 17S adapter is a great way take a bipod designed for a less-common mount and put it on a rifle with a different mount interface.
One caution: While the dimensions of the SLOT on a 17S are standard, the HOLE SPACING is not. If the accessory you're mounting requires specific hole spacing, make sure you choose a mount / adapter with that exact hole spacing.
There are LOT of 17S mounts and adapters available on the accessory market (and at Brownells!). With a little diligent comparison shopping, you can find the right one for your needs.
For info about an excellent bipod that uses a 17S mount, check out Caleb's Product Spotlight video on the MDT GRND-Pod Bipod.

An adapter to adapt an adapter to an adapter. Just what gunsmiths needed on the market.

lol I just won a Magpul bipod. $114 value, but now I need a $90 adapter for it to work on anything.

That's a gorgeous rifle. You mentioned the chassis but what action is in there? Great video as always! 👍

So the benefit of this is that there is more surface contact which means a more stable surface vs something like an mlock bipod or system that is really only held in by a pair of screws? Whereas this mounts to the entire rail itself and is also more adjustable up and down the bottom of said hand guard?

Where can I find the screws to mount that mdt grnd pod to the area 419 arca mount? I can't believe they're sold as a package, without the required mounting screws 😂

I'm refining my "SPR function" AR, and now that I have a fairly rigid handguard/upper receiver setup (Aero Precision M4E1 enhanced/Quantum handguard) I'm figuring out a quick release/detach bipod. Just scored an A.R.M.S. 17S mount and added a 9-slot Magpul aluminum
MLOK Picatinny section - don't need all the slots, but I like the fact that it has 3 MLOK attachments to spread the stress over a larger area on the handguard. Now for my question - is there a comprehensive list somewhere of bipods available with a 17S interface? So far I've found the Magpul, Atlas BT69-LW17 and the MDT Grnd-Pod. I have a Magpul MLOK already and it's OK for most uses, but is there anything more rigid without jumping up to the Atlas/MDT price range?

I run a full length arca rail with minimalist spigot mount on my KRG bravo 10/22 build. It’s using a tactical solutions x-ring receiver and barrel. I use the spigot mount with a RRS r-lock soar clamp on an atlas bipod so I can easily move from the picatinny up in the spigot to the arca rail on the stock. It’s a total tack driver of a 10/22
    With a 5-25x56 ep5 Arken it’s a blast to shoot off a tripod,bag or bipod

Magpul makes its Bipod in 17s and also makes the knurled knob adapter($80 ouch!) to mount it to 1913 pic rail. Then you only need that one bipod for all your rifles no tools to swap! Magpul should just sell it for $190. Instead people are buying 2 bipods that need tools to get off!

It sure would have been nice for you to demonstrate installing a 17S acc. on a stock configured for it like a bipod. For instance how do the screws work? You did a terrible job explaining the 17S.

The Brownells/MDT collaboration seems like an interesting solution to my needs. However, that hideous green that MDT uses is just... well, hideous. And the FDE option only works on guns of certain color schemes... Why no plain black? Hell, everyone knows that black goes with everything... Hate to admit that I'm vain enough to care how my gun looks. But, honestly, who doesn't???

For all practical (and common) purposes, I can see little, if any advantage over M-Loc. We have zero requirement for tripod mounts. Another "standard" is nonsense for the majority of us. I'll just wait until the "real" standard, (M-Loc), mount is available to buy the bipod. Until then, meh...

Speak for yourself. Most competitive shooters use arca as well as a large number of hunters. I agree its not for everybody but once you set up for it using anything else seems archaic.

@@Cristopher1976 Actually, I was. 17S accessories comprise a tiny fraction of the market. And an adapter for M-Lok to 17S is absurd. (Just get an M-Lok accessory in the first place.) My point is simply that, while this seems an excellent bipod, without an M-Lok option, it's not going anywhere in the market. Additionally, if there is some technical reason why 17S is superior for mounting bipods, I've not found it. That is all.

@@davidtigwell9021 by your logic picatinny would be the way to go. Or swivel stud mount. Mlok isn't a super star mounting solution.

    • @davidtigwell9021
      @davidtigwell9021 Рік тому

@@Cristopher1976 Not really - the pic rail is too heavy. But the discussion is about only the compatibility of, and wide-spread availability of accessories. I never suggested that M-Lok was some sort of universal superstar in anything other that the marketplace. By that standard, it absolutely is. Once again, not offering this bipod in M-Lok, (perhaps in addition to 17S), was a dumb commercial move.

@@davidtigwell9021 they are simply allowing the end user to decide what interface they want. Mdt only has picatinny or arca. Im sure they done their research on what their customers want.
