I am always amazed at the size live bait a smallish catfish can eat. Bluegills do the same thing. I catch 4 inch bluegills on a 2.5 inch plastic jig… and they swallow it.
Had the same thing happen to me that you experienced with the blue that ate that big bluegill. Except when I got him up on the dock, the hook wasn't hooked in the catfish, he just decided he was going to hold onto that bluegill for all he was worth! When I threw him back, he spit that bluegill out the second he hit the water!!
For bluegills ill use a jig, go close to the shore and find a spot where tree limbs are over the water and Ill put on a grub, works great, some days its dead, but thats why they call it fishing not catching, nice vid!
We only have channels and flatheads in northern Illinois were I live. For someone who has caught 1000’s of bluegills. The best way in my opinion. If you can’t see them. Then cast, reel ten feet. Let your bait drop again. Leave for a couple seconds then do the same thing all the way to the boat till you find them. If they are there, most of the time the will hit it instantly. They like it on the fall most of the time in my experiences.

Redbreast sunfish it has the longer ear and the green stripes on the face. The green sunfish doesn't have a long ear and has a larger mouth. The longear has teal blue on the face and through out it body it is a stunningly beautiful fish.
Where do you get your skip Jack ! Do you catch that as well ,seems like I remember you catching some . Is it really skipjack or just what you call it ,and it being some other type of fish for replacement on the menu . Freshwater skip jack. White bass and yellow bass also work this time of year. gizzard shad and bluegill or green sunfish are also good baits will have to check your state regulations to see if u can use game fish for bait. I have used small and large mouth bass and even crappie and caught fish.

We call them a warmouth up in Kentucky and they are really good for live bait nice and energetic
