I have that exact condition. It hurts quite a bit and I have trouble walking the day after games. There is indeed a surgical solution which includes cutting/splitting the tendon the long way and guiding it around the deformity and re-attaching it. Recovery time is 9 months or longer which is not a good option for me as of now. I take Ibuprofen to reduce inflammation and Tylenol for the pain about an hour before the game but surely feel it the day after.
I had the issue surgically repaired. The Dr. detached a piece of the tendon, filed the bone down and re-attached the tendon. Hurted like a mother** and took me like 3 months to walk without pain 😒

However it got so big and hurt so bad she could barely walked and decided to get an operation. After the operation she couldn’t walk for 8 weeks and couldn’t run since 12 weeks had passed. It’s much better now than before the operation. Maybe Coutinho doesn’t want to be out for this long so he instead decides to cut holes I’m thinking

Joe Cole suffered with the same issues on both feet for years. So decided to have treatment. This meant going under the knife and having the spurs as they are called in medical terms, shaven smooth. This is something I've also suffered with for years, these spurs are formed through damage and injury. You can get these in other areas of the body, as I have some on my spine in my neck also caused my injury. It's a natural cause.. to a bone injury. Where during regrowth a spur will form.

I've had haglunds deformity on both feet ever since I was 18. The reason was cheap tight shoes. Now I am 24. It was crazy painful when I was 18 but I took a break and the swelling went down. Now I have to be careful that I don't wear cheap shoes or shoes that are tight in the heel. I rarely have problems now. The reason being is stretching and strengthening my calves and better shoes. At a certain point it was a debilitating pain and I could only play by staying on my toes around 90% of the time. After you warm up it hurts less. Surgery is not a very good option according to some research I read recently. It said that a professional athlete has an around 60% percent chance of returning to his sport and playing for 2+ years after the surgery. Or in other words, there is a 40% chance that you won't be able to continue being a professional athlete after the surgery. Looking at these statistics I would assume there is some kind of major loss in physical ability due to the operation, it might cause issues with movement, flexibility, strength or a combination of the 3. And even those that return are probably never the same again, they just manage to deal with the drawbacks. So in short, I recommend not doing the surgery if preventive treatment helps. For example cooling, resting(for a few months), changing footwear, wearing gelpads etc. Here is the link to the research : journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/23259671211009820 Also, you need to take in to account that this research was done on pro athletes who are being monitored by doctors and coaches all the time. They have better care than the average person.
