  • Watching football…the seventies way. 🚙
There’s always something new and fascinating lurking in various corners of the secret warehouse at the ‪@greatbritishcarjourney‬, and recently I’ve stumbled across everything from an amphibious car, to a sports car given as a gift to F1 driver Mario Andretti by Lotus.
This though, surely wins hands down for quirkiness. It’s a football stadium seat on wheels…no, really!
In the 1940s to the ‘70s, the government’s approach to mobility was to give disabled people a Thundersley Invacar.
Powered by a Villiers motorcycle engine and with room for one, football stadiums allowed disabled fans to park pitch-side and watch the match from the comfort of their cars.
There was just one problem - being a three-wheeler and just the right height to rest your elbow, fans watching from Invacars would find themselves sat at all sorts of funny angles as their fellow supporters would rest their arm, their pint and goodness knows what else on the roof.
No doubt this will be a new Drive Dad’s Car initiative - buy a voucher to drive the Invacar to Pride Park to watch a Derby County match…pitch-side! 😆

There is a nicely preserved example at the Bubble Car Museum in Lincolnshire which I recorded on my channel. I also included a handmade white metal model of one in my recent 1/43rd c1975 pub diorama, hiding on the pavement behind a greenhouse. The Invacar is such a uniquely British design. Quirky & rare like the Clan Crusader which bought me to your channel.
