Happy New Year to everyone. I was lucky enough to visit the centre early in the new year and met some of the team had a good talk with some. Thanks to all for the great work and the videos.
As an Ex-RAF Aircraft Airframe Technician I love all of the work these guys are doing. I've done most skills myself. Unfortunately I don't live anywhere near Lincolnshire
Thanks for posting the video Neville! Regarding the two different size nuts, it might be that Avro wanted the assemblers to have to deal with one wrench or socket size. On the other hand, I wonder if there is a wrench/socket clearance issue by going to a larger nut size. Just a thought.
In America a Seven Times rivet gun would be called a 7X. I believe it refers to the size (weight) of the slide hammer inside the rivet gun. From the look of it I would guess Dave was using a 2X or 3X gun installing the button head rivets on the aft fuselage skins.
What is the advantage or reason for the chain drilling of the rib lightening/structure holes over marking the centre of the hole and using a pressed 'dimple die and punch' to produce the required form? The reason for the common hex size/differing bolt size in the nuts is common assembly tooling. It is common even in modern manufacturing to have a 'special' fastener to maintain a common assembly tool (socket, spanner key etc.). It minimises tooling inventory, effectively means the only error state is not tightening the fixing and reduces the size of the tool which in multiple tool applications means the fixing spacing is kept constant which is important in flanged riveted or bolted joints.

There are about 1,500,000 rivets in a Lancaster bomber.
That's a LOT of drilling, deburring and drill bits... These guys are DEDICATED!
