Nice video. I used to have 2 of them, and I’d use the midi tracks/LFOs of one Octatrack to control the other. With a total of 16 sample tracks, I’d use one as a drum machine, the other for melodic stuff. It was pretty nuts, but like you said, difficult to lock in a workflow. I love the octatrack, though.

Tip - you don’t need a blank scene, just mute it (Function+A or B)

Thank you for this insightful talk. A real enjoyable ride!
Can you explain your track mode glitchy effect chain setup, where one track samples the next one? I think I get most of it. But I don't get the "normal" p-locked state. Do all tracks just have a pattern length of 2-4 steps and are constantly recording and playing back? What a crazy machine...

Great video! It is a pretty genius machine in many ways the octatrack, totally agree about finding a workflow...the thing is so fan flexible, maybe a template is a good idea ...not a fan of the encoders on the mk1, they are starting to respond bad on mine (got a used one a few months ago not in 100% shape), i think it has to do with pressing the encoder down to much/hard, stressing the metal inside...
I have been thinking in a similar way about the octatrack as a multitrack recorder...i just have to figure out how to work around the record latency compensation (there is non in the octatrack that i know of, i could use the substeps on the triggers but they are not fine enough a lot of the time)...this was my plan from the start to use it like a realtime looper,sketchpad...but if i have to go in manually and adjust start and end-points for each loop (even if i set it correctly on the grid) i think it is maybe to much "housekeeping" work, and not realtime anymore..even recording the internal metronome from the output to the input the sound is about 3.1ms late when i play it back...if i then what some extra FX like a boss multiFX box it will add another 3ms..it is a bit of a mess...wish it had a way to calibrate the recording buffers...so i think it is better to do all this in ableton, that puts stuff where it is supposed to be and save out samples that playback exactly where they where recorded..
this one backing track workflow you did for the full song is a great idea!!....i just figured out how to set up ableton with correct record latency compensation sending a test sample out and in again and calibrate it so that both tracks are aligned (almost sample accurate). It seems one have to do this calibration in ableton for each new track just before recording a new track (depending on what VST is added more latency can be added to the whole project)...also keeping the monitoring off in ableton at all times. I used to think ableton did all that automagically in the background.
Oh so they finally updated the HX stomp with more blocks, nice!...i have had this box high on the list, but 6 FX seemed a little low esp as i wanted to split it up and use 2 FX paths...also i read somewhere that the midi cc modulation is wonky...can you confirm that? Can you try feeding it a few midi LFO's from the octatrack?
That was a really interesting use of the octa..as a modulation sequencer for ableton!! I run a super old macbook and the max4live LFO's take up loads of CPU on my computer...i wonder how well it will respond with midi jitter and latency stay in sync...also i think it is quite steppy/low samplerate compared to the max4live ones.
The arp is great and you can quantize it to mayor/minor and inversions of that with the root note...so i think you will get all the common western scales (its in the ARP page, doubleclick the ARP button, and i think it works even if the arp is not on). I like to map a LFO to the arp speed and run that to a rompler on a drum track...u can get some pretty interesting wonky beats that way...speeding up and lowing down in a somewhat musical way :D
To get the slide working with overlapping notes on the octa i found u can map a knob in the octa to cc#64 (sustain pedal) then just sequence the sustain pedal cc# like a "slide track"
Compressor ratios could use similar system as the Retrig time (RTIM) value in the AMP section, display changes for 1/16 notes 1/8 notes etc ...but i think having smoothly variable ratios is nice...like on the RNC hardware compressor. Not a biggie for me, lack of record latency compensation is my biggest problem with the octatrack...and maybe that i need to find a workflow/template with it...
also ADAT i/o (i mean octatrack!! imagine audiorate CV out to expertsleepers modules to the modular) analog clock and reset i/o...2 midi out plus the thru/din sync...USB midi/audio and class compliance. A few CV outs and ins...polysynth-"machine/track" say 32ch polyphony with velocity sensitivity aftertouch modmatrix etc (like a "normal" sampler)...96kHz samplerate, more octaves pitch transpose...but i guess i have to wait for a few more teeth to fall off before that happens or get the elektron trio and get some of that :D Or maybe even a MC707...that thing is also high on my list to buy.
Shit that was a long post....long video makes long comments...hahah, keep up the good vids, really interesting stuff...quite similar stuff i have been thinking about recently.
