Juan, as commercial student that is looking to break into the aerial firefighting business, the content from this conference is pure gold. Thank you for taking the time to focus on the inside scoop of what is required to get hired on with the Cal Fire program specifically. Flying S-2’s for them has been the dream for a while now. Unfortunately there is not a huge amount of information out there on how to get to pilot jobs like these, so this helps tremendously. Keep up the good work! -Zach

Know a fellow who works for Neptune and he loves flying. I believe he flies the BAE-146. You must really be skilled to get those tankers in close and be accurate with your drop. Heat and wind can play havoc on the C-130 and all jet tankers in use today. Those guys earn their money during fire season in my opinion. Those tanker pilots are unsung heroes too.

Juan, as Zach already said this is pure gold for some of us. There is very little info on this out there. Would have never know this conference existed. Thanks a million. You do great work. It's gonna suck for all of us when they let you go back to work! I'm sure you'll still be around but your cadence recently has been incredible.

Back, in the day, I sat RIGHT SEAT, ON A B720, BRITISH LICENSE , had to SURRENDER IT FOR A MEDICAL, you speak of HURT , Aviation was NEVER GOING TO BE IN MY FUTURE, so changed out for a trade REFRIGERATION & AIR GREAT paying , somewhere I have adds for PEOPLE EXPRESS B737, & NY AIR DC9, I would have hat to take a SERIOUS CUT IN PAY, for those jobs . Dam I feel old. There has to be a way to get Pilots and Air-tanker Pilots into the early career day events at schools to fire up that desire to become aviators and maybe even one that helps fight fires. I’m 58 now and with all these great reports and interview and coverage.... I’m regretting my career choices. I should be talking to my kids now about this as well. Such an important and exciting career. Thanks Juan....

As a youngster, I watched TBM Grumman Avengers reload at Vancouver International from only feet away. The pilots just kept the big radial engines ticking over until the tanks were full ... and were off again without ever getting out of their aircraft. I will never forget the great clattering rumble of a huge Wright-2600 Twin Cyclone engine as it idled.
I was at some of the airshows at Abbotsford International when performances were interrupted so Conair tankers could operate. And in about 1973, I watched a Conair DC-6 extinguish a fire on a mountain in the District of North Vancouver. Watching a big four radial engine, converted airliner swooping just feet above me and skimming the tree-tops on a mountain and dumping is permanently etched in my memory.

A friend of mine ( long since past away )had an Air Coupe years ago and he loved it . . His son took it over after his death I believe . . He had a little runway behind his house and had a few small planes I remember looking at them in a big barn . . Heck of a nice man . . Dont make em like him anymore

I watched you two on James channel yesterday and it was a hoot. You guys have a great chemistry together......................................I especially like the part where James was taxiing to the fuel pumps (for his FREE gas) at a high rate of fuel consumption and you said something to the effect that you've never taken a corner that fast in your life!!!!!!.............................One more thing about James, he wasn't intimidated flying with you.(:>) (:>)(:>)

Thanks for an insider’s view into this amazing community of the people in the aerial fire-fighting industry. I’m sure some of your credibility there comes from your training and time as a lead pilot. I’ve not been much better than a white knuckle flyer, but seeing these interviews and this footage, I would have been pretty stirred by it as a young man. Thanks for getting the word out about these opportunities.
The S-2T is my favorite. I used to live on a hill and one day an S-2T flew about 200 ft over my roof to dive into a valley. The G limits on the S-2 are higher as it is designed for a 4 G no flare aircraft carrier landing. Only one life lost in a crash vs. three.

The last Ercoupe came off the line in Maryland in 1952, but the plane was made after that in other states until 1970. The company that built these was ERCO. They had their own two runway airport behind the factory that was shown on maps. The factory building was demolished in October 2013. But after they stopped making Ercoupes, ERCO went into the simulator business. They were making analog simulators at the factory in the 1960s. A number of these simulators were located at McClellan AFB.
I wondered where you were going with that until you said about the sims at Mc Clellan. Well that’s interesting. Would like to see them, good Ercoupe related history!
Always liked the OV-10. Seems perfect for the mission.

I was partner in a 1946 Aircoupe . NO rudder peddles. The only aircraft I was not found of. Enjoyed the video. The pilots coming up have a lot more opportunities than I . But I did enjoy teaching aircraft systems for McDonnell - Douglas and Boeing.

Juan, knew Slim Knights from Conair and work with his son Brian every day. Brian has some very interesting stories. Wear my Conair Jacket with pride. Slim didn't like wearing flight suits if you know what I mean.

It is hard to compete in the civilian world with the pilot training the military offers...It is hard to buy seat time in a 4 engine transport in the civilian world...
This would be a great opportunity to become a Cal fire Pilot flying the OV-10 With the 5 blade Prop unfortunately I would have to relocate to The West Coast

At time 16:33 you see an airplane taking off from runway "08"...that was not an American airport...if it was in America it would have been painted runway "8"...it was probably taking off in Canada.
That segment started off with "Some vintage footage from Canada from Conair" is also a good clue!
Juan, as A380s are being phased out now available on the used market, would they make a good platform as firefighting tankers?

Question, when you drop your load how pronounced is the cg change in the air craft. In other words if you did not change the power or trim settings what would the aircraft do? Obviously if the aircraft remaied straight and level the aircraft would accelerate after dumping the load. But what does it actually do?
pitches up, watch the S2-T cockpit view again...both hands pushing down elevator during the drop, plus running the trim.
Did they mention anything about needing Loadmasters for the C-130?

I have been hearing about the "Pilot Shortage" since 1975 it was BS then, to get you to write a check for flight school and It's an even bigger amount of BS in 2020 the only difference is that the size of the check needs to be 20 times as much as it was when I went. There are just not that many seats So instead of 100 resumes on the pile you have 65 and well there must be a shortage.
The shortage is here, and so are the side effects...

How do they make sure it's not the wrong people who are getting involved in this for scrupulous purposes,we had that issue 20 + years ago.
oil business works the following: 7 and 7, 14 and 7, month on month off, 6 and 3, 4 and 2, 28 and 14...
Will there still be a pilot shortage in 3 months or a year? Got me worried here with a fat stack of student loans.
That aside this fire piloting business has some appeal to me, I'm not a risk taker but I like a challenge.
In an inherently dangerous business, non-risk-takers are kind of exactly what you want.
